My Toyota dealer has WiFi for people waiting on maintenance

My Toyota dealer has that capability. They have a lounge area with tables and comfortable chairs so that you can access the internet from your laptop while you are waiting for your car to be serviced or repaired.

It is a nice feature to have along with the free coffee and danishes.

Put WiFi in a bar three years ago....

My favorite local saloon agreed to let us install a hotspot three or four years ago (all the gear was still 80211.b, it was so long ago). Now we're installing power strips under the bar's elbow rail so the bartenders don't have to plug in the battery challenged.

It gets an amazing amount of use. Sure stops a lot of bar arguments when you can Google the answers to disputes. Funny stuff. The only downside is the folks who sit out in the parking lot to use the service instead of coming in to get a beer.

Been a great success. www.huddlebar.com

This has been going on for years..

The only news here is Wi-Fi bars. No surprise there. Actually, bars should go internet cafe.

When I was a Sys Admin for a Chrysler Dealership and a RV Dealership (ran by the same guy) we offered Wi-Fi for service customers. RV Dealers do it because it could take up to 2 hrs to do a oil change on 42' RV. Also, for most rv'rs, it is the main access to news, mail, et all.

RV Parks ad camping sites have been offering Wi-Fi access for at least 4 years.

It's amazing here in suburban Atlanta, that wifi has not only found it's way into car dealerships and bars, but also family restaurants (JR BBQ, Buffalo's Cafe, J. Christophers, Bailey's etc etc) and Kroger Supermarkets & Whole Foods stores...

Can't beat firing up the pocket PC, loading SJPhone or Skype and talking for free around the world or listening to my favorite internet radio station from Australia while shopping for groceries.

The future is now.

"Greensboro paper discovers Wi-Fi isn't just for coffee chops"

Does that say "CHOPS" instead of "SHOPS" ?

Free WiFi is everywhere.

Not only is it free at Bars. It's also free at your neighbors across the street!

hack fest!

Car dealerships? Bars? Could come in handy, but how many of those places are going to be secure?

Doing some wardriving while getting your oil changed will take on a whole new meaning...

Let the bets fly

Maybe bar will provide patrons with laptops for getting on internet. Now I can go to sports bar, showing multiple games, (i.e. college basketball, football, or even euro league soccer) and place bets. Legal way of gambling and drinking without going to vegas.

Loin, pork or lamb chops? This is the section time today, I've seen food on a board. Earlier, I was on another board and I was craving chocolate, graham crackers and peanut butter.

It made it into the post I was typing up!

It's funny that around lunch, our stomachs do the typing for us!

There is a KFC/A&W near us that has free Wifi. Pretty good enjoying a Rootbeer float and some winds with biscuts!

Doctor's waiting room

Now grannies born before WWII are probably happy with People magazine, but the baby-boomers know what the Internet is. And Gen X'ers like myself, who get things like cancer and need specialists, really don't care when the TomKat baby will hatch.

WiFi the doctor's, hospitals, and dentists!!!

Another thought...

I am at a Tully's in Seattle waiting for the Empire Builder train to take me back to the dump that is Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That's right... a TRAIN. United Airlines has screwed me for the last time.

Amtrak is always in a sorry state, but I think people are starting to revisit rail travel. Most pax on the way out here were first-timers who had been bumped from reserved and paid for airline seats (so that sorry industry could clear out Denver).

Boy, if they had Internet on the train I could basically run my business from a Superliner coach seat. I'd even pay a rip-off price of, let's say, $20 a day. Great revenue stream, would increase ridership, and make two nights from the Midwest to the coast more bearable.

Write your senators... they gave the airlines $15B after 9-11, and piss and moan about the couple hundred million Amtrak requests for annual deferred maintenance. Wifi would be a small capital investment and would likely pay for itself in added revenue. All mass-transport requires public money, and none are really profitable (including the airline industry).

Rant over.
