Comments on news posted 2007-01-04 09:33:07: You may or may not remember Sealand, a platform off the coast of Britain -- a self-proclaimed micronation that was the center of much debate once they declared their independence from the UK. ..

Ad sponsored island?

Is it just me or is their flag (per the Wikipedia link in the article) very very close to NetZero's logo? :P

Yet they only have one ISP and that isn't NetZero...

Wow this is so 90's

I remember when Wired magazine had a piece on Sealand a long time ago. Talk about bringing back the dead. Sealand was pretty much going to print money when it all was said and done. Too bad, it seemed like an interesting idea.

New owner beware. "There have been at least seven attempts by raiders to try to seize it from the Bates family with petrol bombs, shotguns and hand-to-hand fighting."

Time for UN involvment.

Maybe the UN can throw a few billion dollars at them to help restore this great kingdom and its royal family.

90s, hell. Prince Roy founded the place in the 1960s.

(It just so happens that Sealand, aka "the Roughs Tower" to us mainlanders, is visible from the town I grew up in).

But you're right about the data haven being '90s.

Have you been a contestant on The Price is Right, lately?

All kidding aside, I always found the Sealand story to be an interesting one. It took a brass set to do what this guy did, and stick with it all these years. It shows a pioneering spirit that has been lacking since the mid 20th century.

Not only that, that old platform and it's inter-workings are cool from an urban spelunking standpoint...

For sale?

I don't see anything about that on the "official" Sealand website.

Perhaps they should apply to the U.S. for foreign aid.

If they send one "citizen" to Iraq, they'd be probably the 3rd or 4th strongest member of the "Coalition of the Willing"...!

Yeah, he's getting on in years. Calling it quits.

I'm sure he would try to spay and/or neuter your avatar, if she hadn't passed on....

Dont laugh if they DIDNT want a arm and a leg for the surgery he would still be alive. He had cystals in his bladder keep plugging him up. The surgery was to change him from a male to a female so he wouldnt get the cystals anymore.

Oh, I'm not laughing. Just letting you know I remember you lost your kitty.

I love mine. I think he's the bomb...

I know it's not my usual sarcastic smart ass response, but I'm on standby waiting for my little guy to kick (he's 14) but he's still very active....

Who wants to find a navy for me?

If I could get the whole place for under US$100,000 it might be worth it!

Re: Ad sponsored island?

Given that Sealand was 'founded' in the 1960's and Netzero was started considerably later, you can safely assume that Netzero stole Sealand's flag for their logo.

Right?

Do you? I dont. But then, I understand how to structure and interpret sentences. It's not a joke.

Look at all that rust...Ahhh! The salty sea air, dontcha just love it? It might be nice IF it doesn't spring a rust hole and sink, or have another fire from a overworked generator. They might even be able to rent it to pirates...

You're a little short.

From the Wiki link: "An unknown nine-figure Euro cost is set as the price for the new tenant(s)."

Based on that price I assume drug use has been legalized there as well.
