Comments on news posted 2007-01-10 18:37:42: Users in our Mac forum wonder how the iPhone can be called a "breakthrough Internet communications device" by Apple, when the device fails to support Cingular's HSDPA wireless broadband network, instead only working on their slower (around 200kbps) E.. ..

Done deal.

Cingular as the only provider. I'm out.
Good idea to limit your audience. Because we were ready to drop everything for the ROKR.

why is everyone so down on Cingular? It's the largest carrier in the US, they must done some things right (yeah, I know the CS is sometime poor, but some of those people are very good and very helpful)- I travel along the east coast and except in very rural areas (where all the carriers have problems) it's not that bad in coverage. I've not experienced thier 3G since I've never purchased a phone with more than EDGE speeds and the 3G coverage is spotty. I've used Google Local on my non-edge phone, and it works well and only takes 3-5 seconds or so to get a result from a search and that's tolerable. (I have 15/2mps at home so I know the difference between slow and really fast.)

In any case, they have some new plans that will allow unlimited internet access for as low as $20/mo.(MediaMax 200) And you'll have WIFI "G" on it (iPhone) too.

You can take your OUTLOOK and sync it to Yahoo, and then sync that to your phone. If they support the whole Yahoo calendar, contacts and email thing, that's not bad. I'm sure someone will put up a widget to make it more MS Office friendly if your life depended on that that level of document support.

I've stayed away from Verizon because of their generally overpriced internet and 'your're guilty' viewpoint of users. So it's got all these "technologies" developed by cingular, how does that translate to sales overseas? (ie where there is no cingular).

cue in the clueless posts.

No one gets it do they? It is a a Cingular phone. That means it has a SIM card. Now anyone with two brain cells to rub together will know that you can get one of these phones, unlock it, and then you can use it on any GSM network (provided the phone will be quad band which I bet it will)

That's the reason Cingular is carrying it. Not because Cingular got an exclusive scoop, but because it is a GSM phone that will go easily to other carriers once the Cingular exclusivity lock runs out.

CDMA fan boys can chalk up another loss to their niche network due to closed standards.

Re: cue in the clueless posts.

I personally think that it was all a marketing strategy. There is no way that apple could have thought that cisco would allow them to use the name, especially after their multi-year negotiation process.

The more people talk about the lawsuit, the more people talk about the phone.

It is a shame about the lack of real broadband, and i'd love to see it come to CDMA, although I'm sure even if it did, verizon would drag their feet on adopting it

What is 3G and what else is this missing?

Guys, what IS 3G? What IS the status of Cell broadband via Cingular/AT&T?

I don't have credit and can only get this service thanks to Bellsouth being my phone provider. When I go to work on the road I might want this thing. The idea of not missing a phone call while listening to music is the main appeal. But I'd rather have a player that can play formats that Apple players don't play (unless you soft mod them) such as FLAC and OGG...

EDGE only WTF

Damn my Treo(Windows Mobile) is my Ipod, Internet Browser, Phone and Satellite Radio substitute via commercial free Internet Radio.

EVDO I can stream net radio at 64 to 96kbps while driving around town and highways using EVDO www.techavid.com/internetradiomobile.php . The Iphone wont be able to do that, as EDGE does not have enough bandwidth - blah APPLE.
