but I think the prognostication about this phone being a flop is a little shortsighted. I wouldn't use it because it doesn't fit my needs. However with the amount of people who have razors, chocolates and other IMHO poorly thought-out /working phones, I can't see calling this ones popularity "shaky" because of a few missing features.

"iDon't think so
First of all, to use the iPhone you need to use Apple's iTunes software, and with it Apple's FairPlay (ha!) digital rights management scheme. It means dealing with a product that despite what Mac fanatics say is fraught with problems. That's why so many are installing Rockbox instead.
At this point it isn't clear whether anyone but Apple will be allowed to create applications for the iPhone, although it does run OSX. At the start, though, it will only do what Apple allows it to. As with all things Apple, it's their way or the highway, and right now that doesn't include supporting Word or Excel files, so business users may want to look elsewhere." |

I think the masses however will avoid this phone due to the $500-600 price tag plus being chained to Cingular for two years; I know that is the reason I am. |

What rag is this and what is the point in running an article about the "possible" security implications of a product that no one has actually seen yet???
It reads like some reporter hopped into an irc channel with a bunch of 14 year old "hackers" and wrote an article based on their babbling. |

I'm on Cingular (came over from AT&T) and I have no problems with them. They have great service everywhere I go, have good phones, and have reasonable prices. (NOTE - Your milage will vary). But the $500-$600 price ON TOP OF a contract is just WAY to expensive. My question is, why didn't Apple put UMTS and HSDPA support? Cingular already has a device that WILL support it for less money. I don't mind using the Pocket PC OS as I have been using it for several years. I currently have a PPC-6700 through Sprint that was provided by my company. I'm mainly saying, wait a while, the price might come down, and Apple might unteather from Cingular and go with TMobile as well. Apple said they have NO plans on making the phone in any other technology than GSM (which is a world standard) meaning Sprint, Verizon won't ever get this phone. -- Hot Jamz 94FM »cjaiceman.is-a-geek.com/hotjamz/hotjamz.pls |

After owning a supposed "multimedia" phone, I won't buy another one. I have both MP3 and Video capabilities on the phone I have now, and I almost never use it. I never use the MP3 capability, and I rarely use the video.
I do use the mobile internet a lot, and plan on getting a Treo or a blackberry as my next phone.

| This Article is a Joke
What is this doing on the front page? The article is pure speculation and poorly written. I am also an Apple fan (disclaimer) but this article offers absolutely nothing other than speculation on a product that hasn't even been released yet.
"The familiarity of the operating system" should make it an easy target for hackers? What the hell does that mean? If the argument that OS X's main security advantage over Windows is its obscurity is to be believed (I sure as hell don't believe it) then there is very little familiarity of the operating system to begin with.
Add to that the fact that Cisco may have lost its rights to the "iPhone" trademark last year, and suddenly it looks like much of the anti-iPhone ranting is mostly off-base.
The lack of 3G is a legitimate dissapointment, but Steve Jobs has already announced that feature will be included in future versions. Hell, for all we know, it may be part of the iPhone by the time it is released.
This ranting about how the iPhone is sure to be a market failure reminds me of iPod bashing that occurred in 2001 when that device was first released.

1 edit | Big difference between a phone and an ipod.
Check back in 2 years to see where the phone stands and how many customers are willing to pony up big bucks for the inevitable iTrade up for new versions.
Now where did I put that handy dandy iPhone iAnything battery replacement tool.

| Are you referring to Apple's frequent product release cycle, or just the fact that it doesn't have a user-replaceable battery?
Given the choice, I agree: I would prefer a user replaceable battery. But to be honest, that didn't seem to matter to most people with the iPod - and it turns out that self-replacement of the iPod battery isn't that difficult after all.
For all we know, it may end up being Apple and Cingular will offer affordable replacement of batteries in-store by their technicians. It's too late to pass much judgement at all on the iPhone (whether positive or negative) until it hits the market.
And who keeps a phone for more than two years anyway? -- Been around the world and found That only stupid people are breeding The cretins cloning and feeding And I don't even own a TV. |

| Actually both apply.
That is why I said check back in 2 years after the phone is on the market and the cottage Industries kick in.
Why should a company (not just Apple) that could easily make batteries user replaceable chose to make it hard so they can garner a few extra bucks on servicing the device?
Just smacks of cheesiness to me. -- When the going gets tough the tough run away.
