how-to block ads
|
Comments on news posted 2007-01-17 09:11:47: A major reason Tivo users pay a monthly fee is to skip advertisements, so obviously they were annoyed when the company began putting ads on the screen should users try to fast forward through commercials. ..

2 edits | Why the fuss? So while a commercial is zipping past as you are fast-forwarding through it, you instead see a static image with the option to click on it to see an ad related that commercial. It doesn't effect how fast you get through the commercial, and it doesn't require you to do anything to ignore it.
What's the big deal?
(By the way, the extended ad is recorded from an infomercial that TiVo buys, and is stored in a reserved area of the hard drive, so one is not "paying" to download the ad, nor is it taking away from disk space otherwise available to record programs.)

| wah wah wah There's a BUNCH of cry babies who really have nothing more to do here in this thread than Beeetch about stuff for the sake of beeetching. NOT everyone got a TIVO just to skip commercials, nor does everyone have one because they believed that Tivo wouldn't start showing ad's.
If you can't sit through a small short ad once in a while, then dump Tivo. Tivo won't miss you, nor will those who are fine and happy wiht our service, miss the beeetching that comes form people who really have too much time on their hands. Go play some video game or better yet, spend time with your family away from the TV.
MYTH boxes are great, I'm thinking of building one myself, but I'd still probably keep my Tivo at least for a while. Heck, i might not even like what Myth has to offer. Linux isn't exactly an easy OS to understand for many people.
For those willing to spend over $1000 for a prebuilt myth box, when they already have at least one computer in their home, it's called having too much money for un-important things. Computers are not neccesary to one's home life, nore is a TIVO. if you don't like it/them, then get over yourself and sell your TV.
Commercials have been around longer than TV, heck all you ahve to do is watch a show and you're seeing a commercial for some product, with product placement anyway. Commercials are on pretty much EVERY commercially available DVD these days, and some don't allow you to fast forward or skip them. Big deal a few seconds out of someone's life, here and there.

| Those TIVO goons! I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I think it's a mistake (read: SUCKERS) to PAY for a service like this. First, you pay them a monthly fee for a lame service, then they turn around and data mine YOUR viewing choices. And if you don't think TIVO isn't trying to figure out how to market that information so they can target you with more adverts, well then you seriously need to extract your heads out of your arses.
My suggestion would be to invest in a basic DVR from Toshiba/Panasonic/Pioneer/etc., and make some viewing choices of YOUR OWN! And what about the money you'd be saving??? Well, spending it on ANYTHING else more useful like food, gas, pot, or prostitutes would be a good start!

| Getting more forceful won't make a difference... I think it's funny how advertisers seem to think that the more "in your face" an ad is then the more likely you're going to pay attention to it. If anything it just makes me switch to a different channel not currently showing an ad or get up and doing something until it's over. Until advertisers can force some kind of restraints to pop out of my chair and hold me down, there's no way in hell I'm going to ever become more inclined to watching ads. -- In relative terms life is shorter than the blink of an eye. Remember that each and every day because in the end it's not about what you've done but how you've lived.

No, you won't see restraints popping out of your chair. There will be a sensor in the DVR that will know if you have left the room and pause the commercial until you return.
The day I'm waiting for is when the DVR will start recording commercials when the TV is off, and then force you to watch them before you can either watch live TV or playback a recorded show while you pay a company for that privilege.

| I wonder... ...how far advertisers are willing to go?
It scares me to think that most people are sheep.
I use a Motorola DVR and yes I record shows while I'm at work or not home for some other reason BUT I also watch those recorded shows because I can skip the commercials. If I did not have that option I would not pay for this service. I would not watch these shows at all.

| word of mouth I used to tell people that tivo was worth getting, but now I tell people to not get it and they listen. Not only has the monthly price gone up dramatically, but the ads make me angry. I hope tivo suffers miserably for being idiots. They should go ad free and promote it - people would go for it.
Do you realize that the only thing you are paying for is to get a schedule of what's on TV? TV guide is cheaper, and the zap2it website is free (with ads) and looks just like tivo's. Why am I paying for ads when I could be getting ads for free? Because I paid in advance. I am a sucker!
Don't be dumb like me and please pass the word: DON'T GET TIVO.
