Working at home does has it's big benefits and frankly I save a lot of gas just banking at home. But at the same time you will be unable to get away from work because it's going to be there nagging you.
I do online school on top of my original school hours from morning till afternoon and I HATE coming home only to see more school work.
Probably the reason why I come to DSLR just to find something to entertain myself with while I do my online courses.

| I half telecommute
I work out of a home office a few hours a day and work out of my car the rest of the day and my area is south Brooklyn, south Queens and the rest of long island. My company gives me $450 a month for local expenses which covers all of my gas $200, cell phone $40, internet $35 and a VOIP line $25, a couple of trips to the city on the train $50, plus something towards car expenses. So I guess I get my internet paid for.
I do leave the house anywhere from 7 to 9.30 am and work at home from 6 to 8 pm most days doing paperwork answering emails etc. My feeling is that it is much easier to put in an extra hour at home than it is at work so many employers actually get a few extra hours out of telecommuters. I am also in sales, so I am very accountable for job performance.
In my present situation I like working from home, but in a previous job I spend 8 hours a day in my home office and hated it. Living and working inside one's house and really not leaving much from Monday to Friday was incredibly restricting and boring so i can understand why people who have done it would rather travel an hour or so every day to get to the office where they are with other people. |

That's the facts jack. I took yesterday off and talked to at least eight different people from work, this is after informing them I would be out. I don't mind as I consider my job to be 24/7 and normally I'll only field one or two calls.

I would kill to be able to telecommute. Haven't found anything that is actually legit that falls within my current skill range though  . Now if I could only get my terminally ill laptop to actually stop giving me SQL errors I might be able to :\

In 1990 4 million people? What the heck were they running, DOS? Was telecommuting even a word back then?
But then again I still do own a Tandy laptop and it still works! As long as you don't mind the 8" one color screen and the 2 3.5" floppy drives.

I telecommuted with a DOS based machine in the early 80s - a Compaq "portable" with a tiny 5-inch orange/black screen with 2 5.25" floppies. It was more like a suitcase than a modern-day laptop. Using an external modem (1200bps IIRC) I could dial directly to the mainframe. |

By the 90's DOS was sophisticated with task switchers, etc. Windows 2 was released in '87, OS/2 1.1EE '88, NetWare dates back to '86. Tons of different connection/emulation software packages. DBase (as an example) came out on Apple IIGS in '88.
I telecommuted or 'dialed in' since the mid-80's. ASCII-Express and mainframe or Sys/38 terminal emulation later. Wyse terminal emulation... It was always better than driving in for support in the middle of the night. Kept two phone lines for decades....by the 90's had one of those challenge-response password generator cards....
You could do some of this with Apple IIe's, early OS/2 (v1.1EE) had mainframe and terminal support, too in the Enhanced Edition along with the first version of DB/2... ......it was slow, but we didn't know better then....
