Hey! Thanks for the stereotype, jerk! Laughing it up in your quiet little retirement community?
Yes, we really did notice. Businesses that depend on internet and credit card transactions were basically shut down. The operator bank where I work had to sit on their thumbs because we couldn't make any phone sales. No internet orders could be processed, either. We lost a lot of business yesterday because of it, including a LOT of other businesses in the entire county.
So yeah, it did kinda get noticed. |

why in the hell are the fiber lines somewhere where they can burn down? Shouldn't they be underground? |

Right... SPOF in a network but blame the cable. |

| reply to chemaupr Sorry to say but the only way around this is redundancy and it adds higher cost to infrastructure, something that telecomm companies are not willing to do unless someone pays for it(government).
Fibers are not always underground and we can tell this one is not in a ring. Accidents are going to happen for sure so there should be an alt route to avoid long outages, at least for the voice traffic. |

"operator bank"? What are you some sort of telemarketer? If so, it could not have happened to a more deserving group! |

yes, but that wound be inside a metal box, just another case to burry all that aerial plant as you can. desipte the cost. you would think since its happen twice that the cost of repairs both time would outweigh the original cost if they had burried it all orignaly. |

| Apalling
I don't know what is more apalling -- the fact that a whole region of California only has this single fragile high speed link to the outside world, or the ignorance exhibited in several of the posts above. There is much more to Humboldt and Del Norte counties than the pot growers for which Humboldt is famous. The broadband link going down affected a lot of legitimate businesses and people, not to mention the health system, schools, universities, air traffic control and emergency services. Running another fiber optic cable is not a matter of making another run through town, as you would know if you took a look at a map. For many years that corner of California only had a microwave link and all "broadband" for all users had to squeeze through that small link. When they finally ran a fiber optic cable along 101 there was still no backup using another route. Many rural users can still get no broadband at all. Because the phone companies had "modernized" their lines with cheap multiplexing that also precludes DSL, in the boonies it's either dial-up or satellite, with dial-up connections topping off at 24,000bps. |

Then you have to worry about the fiber being dug up: »www.wired.com/news/technology/0,70040-0.html
Some backhoes seem to require a steady diet of fiber to keep running properly... »www.undergroundfocus.com/UFM_fil···page.php -- Don't mind me, I'm just trying to help...

Second i guess no one knows how to pick up a phone and call to located where you are going to dig there. |
