| Acquisition could be good...
If Comcast acquires TiVo, I wouldn't mind seeing a rollout of TiVo-like software to Comcast's DVR boxes. I have both a TiVo Series 2, and a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR through Comcast. While the 8300HD is by far the technologically superior box, the SARA software makes me want to pull my hair out. And just this week, it inexplicably failed to record one of my season passes. The TiVo software has just plain worked, and done so gracefully, every day of its life.
(The TiVo box's hardware itself, on the other hand, has continually and repeatedly failed...) -- "I'll follow the law until it's just stupid." -Ted Nugent |

And I just bought a TiVo Series 3 and transferred the lifetime service to it. Doh! At least for me, it was cheaper than a comparable MythTV system.
Oh wait, this article is just FUD, speculation and rumor. I don't have anything to worry about. |

Some people swear by TiVo but my experience with the ever increasing amount of banner ads and the new lame pricing policy preculding me from ever buying new HW from them I'd say good riddance. |

| Lesser DVRs
Lesser DVRs are common place now days. My Series2 DTV Tivos just keep on tickin so far. Alas if Comcrap does take them over I'll have degrade to a lesser DVR just to avoid even worse Comcrap crap service. -- If only the Verizon CSRs worked this well. |

I swear by my DirecTV Tivo. No banner ads, etc. I'll keep using it as long as it works.
My only worry is that eventually, I will get me a nice HDTV, and will have to replace the Tivo with an HR-20. But the other 3 Tivos will live on! -- "I invented it, Bill made it famous." --David Bradley, the inventor of Ctrl+Alt+Del. |

@ameritech.net | Avoid the DirecTV HR-20 at all costs. I speak from experience, the picture quality for HD is greatly diminished and the interface/SW is no where near as user friendly. It is just awful and currently is sitting on my work bench in the basement. |

| They'll pry my TiVo out of my cold, dead hands!
Yeah yeah, your SA box or Moto box or Dishplayer is just as good - bullshit! You've never compared them.
The TiVo software is the finest piece of work I've ever seen plus they make it easy to replace failed components and expand storage, too.
I'll take my business wherever TiVo goes. Presently it's DirecTV but if Comcast goes TiVo, I'll swallow my hatred of cable companies and follow along IF it's real TiVo. DirecTV has screwed the pooch replacing TiVo with their lame DVRs.
We love how TiVo molds itself to our preferences and gives us suggestions based on what we watch. We've found quite a few programs we enjoy that we would have never seen otherwise. Season passes that morph themselves to catch our favorite programs no matter when they air or where they go is priceless.
I'm actually surprised TiVo has lasted this long, it's a rabid niche market with a marketing plan based on overestimating the general public's IQ. TiVo's days as an independent company are numbered just because people are too damn dumb and too damn cheap to try it. |

| This is a bad thing
The death of TIVO will be a bad thing for all. Though I don't use a tivo anymore (I stopped using it once I found out they were collecting my data, got a replaytv instead, much happier), I'm not happy that comcrap or another megacorp will take it over. The reason: The megacorps don't care about your fair use rights.
Will comcast let you record PPV? NO Will comcast let you export HDTV streams to DVD? NO Will comcast let you record video on demand? NO Those are all fair use rights you won't have once the megacorp takes over. But I have heard tivo was a sellout to the **AA's in the recent times, I've not kept up to date on the specifics. -- Stick it to the MAN. Support your local torrent sites. | Too expensive
The single factor that will kill Tivo is the cost of buying the hardware up front. People complain about the cost of the series 3 yet it is not at all unreasonable. The problem is that the cable companies have enough spare cash to subsidize DVR prices. |

| Got news for you. Cable DVRs, as inferior as they are to tivo, are winning. Just about every family member and coworker I know uses a cable DVR. Tivo needs to work software deals with them or they will become extinct. DirecTV was their last hope and now that's gone. |
