Comments on news posted 2007-02-01 15:03:14: We've been seeing a growing number of pre-cert 50-100Mbps cable solutions deployed in various markets such as the UK and South Korea. ARRIS, Motorola and Cisco are all pitching pre-standard products (with the focus on wideband channel bonding). ..

Who cares, I don't do over 100GB in a month but I'd like to have a connection 10 times as fast.

It's 10.5MB/sec max and no you won't, not if you download the same amount of data.

Re: Hats?

Changed ISP because of the $ but I had them for 6 years and never once I was called about over usage. With the extreme acces I did more than 200 Go for a few month in a row (If I remember correctly I was over 1 TB after 5 month).

Per channel

The per-channel data rate is the same as DOCSIS 2.0. The new thing is channel bonding, which allows multiple channels to act like one fat one.

el oh el

quote:
DOCSIS 3.0, once certified, will offer downstream data rates of 160 Mbps or higher and upstream data rates of 120 Mbps or higher (per channel). It will also incorporate Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and offer a plethora of other performance and functionality upgrades.
Right now, cable can do a nice high upload.. but do we see more than 768 kbps? No. Do we see 768 kbps upstreams with cale ISPs without stupid "we can send out letters threatening discontinued service if you keep using it" - no.

Verizon needs to expand FIOS to the rest of the world. Imagine a world with no transfer caps, low pings, cheap 31/9.5, no enforcement of their TOS, that uses DMCA notices as toilet paper. That's a beautiful world.

Re: el oh el

If you think that Verizon will allow unlimited bandwidth on their FIOS service, you're dreaming. Might not be much of an issue now that there are relatively few users, but that will most likely change- any oversubscribed network can be impacted by high-utilization users.

@rim.net

worthless

As for the comments above:

Videotron is only for a small portion of Canada and their bandwidth, last I heard, has not changed from 20gigs per month... hence worthless.

Rogers and Shaw Cable are available nationally with Rogers being 100 gigs per month.

Videotron testing 500% faster internet service
Last Updated: Friday, February 2, 2007 | 4:02 PM ET
CBC News

Videotron Ltd. is planning in 2007 to roll out a new high-speed internet service at least five times faster than current offerings.

The Montreal-based telecommunications provider said on Thursday that it is testing a service that would let its customers achieve internet speeds as high as 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

Videotron currently offers home internet users what may be the fastest high-speed service in the country, with download speeds of up to 20 megabits a second. Other major telecommunications providers such as Bell, Rogers and Telus offer high-speed services that top out at around five or six megabits a second.

A selected group of Videotron customers in Montreal have been testing the new high-speed service for more than a month and the company is projecting that they will reach a speed of 100 Mbps later this year, the company said Thursday.

The company plans to continue testing over the next few months and subsequently offer the service to more of its 769,000 internet service subscribers.

Videotron said the higher speeds could transform its offerings, especially with the explosion of online video.

According to a statement released jointly with network equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc., the new speeds are possible due to a technological breakthrough. Cisco provides Videotron with hardware through its wholly owned subsidiaries Cisco Systems Canada Co. and Cisco Systems Canada Ltd.
