well i had an idea for prevention...

well i was think why not find a way to up the pole voltage and then reduce it at the NID. but then i remembered that this wouldnt stop copper thieves as well 50-90v isnt going to scare people who tempt fate and try to steal from the electric company.

the II's are starving and have nothing better to do. This is what they do to buy their cup noodles. I can't believe this is a headline. What has America become? Since when were people this cheap and degrading to steal a copper line.

Re: well i had an idea for prevention...

People stealing various metals has been quite common in the past few years. There's been articles in the newspaper of people taking aluminum siding off of abandoned houses and even worse, more than a few people have been killed trying to steal live electrical wiring. There's a old GM factory not far from my work that's had numerous small fires and it's believed to be from people who steal copper wiring and burn the insulation off.

Even with us, we're supposed to recycle plastics and aluminum, so that means we have (2) recycle bins. When I used to set it out in the alley for pickup, there were people who hit the alleys on those mornings and took the soda cans. I finally decided *I'll* save them for myself and turn them in. I've done it a few times but for a family of four, it takes a while to collect enough to make it worthwhile. The first time I held out the longest and actually got around $25... The next time it was less than $10. The price of aluminum had even went up when I went the 2nd time.

hopefully

Hopefully we don't hear about this too often because the practice of yanking down cable and doing whatever is needed to sell it is too much work for little reward.

From a behavioral standpoint, if the theives feel like they're getting something out of it, they're likely to do it again. If not, they probably won't.

copper

With the price of copper this is an issue. People can laugh about it all they want however this is a real issue. People are ripping cable down. You would be surprised how much money can be made by recycling scrap copper.

I recycle

I just took a pickup truck load of steel down to the scrap yard and got 65$ for it..

I pick up old water heaters, dryers, stoves, and anything made of metal, once a month I`ll take em down to the scrap yard and get some extra spending cash.. I mainly drive around my area on garbage day and see what metals are available.. suprising how many people throw out large chunks of metal, even in a small 40-50 home area.. (start playing the sanford & son muzak now lol)

and no, I dont rip down cables lol, but the assmunch's can take my copper, i`m on fios woot!

Re: waaa

It's not just wiring.... The company I work for owns about 100 houses in the metro Atlanta area. In the past four months we've had three outside condensing units stolen and the copper water pipe cut out from underneath two others....

If it is $2.50 a pound that isn't a bad payday for someone to walk off with a 100lbs of copper for a 1/2 hour of work.

I'd really like to catch one of these guys in the act though. I haven't had much target practice this year.

Re: copper

Yeah, I'm wondering what someone thinks can be gotten from stealing copper cable. What goes from pole to pole for telephone service should be a little better grade than what goes to the house, but it doesn't appear to be much better than what I use for radio equipment.

Yeah, I use balanced and unbalanced line. The most expensive stuff is probably the unbalanced RG8U. And even that is just a little over a $1 a foot for decent quality cable. *No one looking for good quality cable is going to buy stuff off the street at top price.*

20 feet just isn't very much. Most of my cable runs are about 100 feet long. So I just am not seeing where the real value is for 20 feet of telephone cable. (Still trying to find out exactly what does go from pole to pole.)

The article says 600 lines so that most likely equates to 1200 wires.
A 20 foot hunk of 600 pair cable does have some weight to it.
I don't think they are talking about the 2 or 4 pairs that run to your home

Re: well i had an idea for prevention...

Someone stole the copper flashing off of my Aunt's home while they were home eating dinner!
They heard this horrible noise and by the time they came outside to see, the thieves were running down the street with sheets of copper trailing behind them.
And this was well over 30 years ago!

I know many contractors and home builders in my area and I can say that I hear a new copper theft story about once per week. Mostly copper plumbing ripped out of new or rehab construction.

At my work a thief stole over $20,000 worth of direct burial irrigation control wire.
Turned out he ws caught and also one of my night employees.
He had sold the wire for scrap and at that time received just over $5,000 for it as scrap.
This was about 1 year ago.
He is now behind bars

Re: copper

This is what the article says:

"The most recent incident occurred in the Weirton area, where a 20-foot section of Verizon cable that housed 600 telephone lines was stolen on Jan. 27, affecting not only residential customers, but police and fire departments in Colliers as well."

It looks like a problem from the article itself, doesn't it. The article does a bit better job explaining what was stolen.

Someone has an idea what that cable is worth I suppose.

Re: well i had an idea for prevention...

Here's another one for people... If you have aluminum siding and get it replaced with vinyl, for example, don't let the installers charge you for "disposal" of that siding. They sure as hell won't be taking it to a landfill ! They'll get paid by you to get rid of it and then they'll make a nice chunk of change at the scrap yard.

In fact, my brother-in-law had hail damage to his siding. The insurance company took his quotes for replacement, deducted approximately what the alum scrap would get, and cut a check for that amount ! Not sure if I agree with that or not...

And someone also has some iron balls. The thieves need to watch out for each other to make sure nothing of personal importance is stolen.

Living here in WV, I can tell you that in our little town several people have been charged with copper theft. It appears though most of the crimes have been at mines. I'm guessing that at the mine entrance copper is just laying around to the point that people think they can steal enough quickly to make a few bucks.
