Comments on news posted 2007-02-14 09:28:07: Users in our Rogers forum offer the early news that Rogers will be offering an 18Mbps tier starting March for $99.95 + $3 modem rental. "Heres the catch," writes one user. "The bandwidth limit is 90gb (yeah, 10gb less then extreme). ..

What a joke..

Do they at least have a trully unlimitted tier like Videotron does ? Or are all their tiers limited somehow.. ?

duh

Everything is limited....

They are one of, if not THE most expensive slipshod providers out there.

They have cut back actual services while dropping cost increases on the subscriber base on an ongoaing basis.

They throttle, they block and do everything else under the sun you can think of that is shady, underhanded or just plain ignorant and mean and some you didn't or wouldn't think of.

More like renting a car and you get 200km free, then its $0.xx/km. At any rate, where I live, I can easily see students who share a house buying into this tier.

I don't think it would have killed them to offer 10GB more/month. It'd make for a nice round number.

Also, if I'm dropping near $100 / month, either let me use my own modem and pay a small onetime fee to a tech to ensure the signals are correct, or waive the rental.

I can only hope that over time, the other tiers will either a) drop in price as more and more speed tiers are released, or b) increase the maximum bandwidth for the older tiers .

Business Reality

I think this offering just reflects a reaction to how the broadband business needs to react to the top .01% of users that are sharing 7x24 100% bandwidth with (sometimes for-profit third party) P2P services.

If 99.99% of Rogers customer base uses xxG of traffic and a small minority shares a TB drive to the world, should they sit back and take a loss from this customer or put in a price structure which correlates to what they pay / Mb when used 100% of the time?

Seeing as my ISP has inviso caps that are above 90GB(from what I have seen 200-300GB), it's still better than knowing that 90GB is a wall!

Either way, it wouldn't affect me! I use a whopping 35GB per month!
But what I *DO* download gets here fast!

As always, YMMV.

Greedy loins...

It's old news that Rogers suck... and for two reasons:

- Probably the most greedy telecommunication company in Canada
- I host Videotron

That is all

Thanks, I'll stick with Comcast

I wonder if all the people complaining that Comcast removed them because their abuse was degrading the performance of others realize that this is the alternative. Ugh, no thanks.

Welcome to cable...

They aren't the first and certainly won't be the last. Despite the claims of liars like Brian Roberts cable networks can't supply these faster speeds without DL caps. Cable operators will either have to continue clamping down on usage, expand capacity at the local level or a combination of both.

But for the cable ISP's, placing these caps is more of a marketing problem (the limits being overblown by competitors like the "web hog" ads of a few years ago) than a user problem as only a minority of users reach those caps.

are caps actually enforced?

I know someone in Canada who has both Rogers and Bell. He runs several internet radio stations which stream out of his connections 24/7. I'm not sure how many streams he has on Rogers and how many he's got on the bell connection, but needless to say, I'd guess he hits the cap and possibly goes over each month on the Rogers connection. Knowing this, as far as I know, he's never gotten kicked off the Rogers network or even so much as a warning letter for using too much bandwidth. this even though he's running internet streams 24 hours a day on the line, therefore his upstream is in use 100% of the time. I'm guessing the reason he can go over the cap and not be bothered about it, is that perhaps because he only makes connections to a couple of servers to stream his audio out, whereas p2p torrent users connect to dozens of computers, that may make the difference? Just guessing here though.

Sweet

Now I can check email even faster. I mean really they block just about everything under the sun. I often wonder if rogers even wants you to use your internet.

I mean WTF am I going to do with this speed now? Sites only send you info so fast.
