Want a demogogic and just plain bad law that reduces personal rights far in excess of what would be effective? Fear.
Want people to pay a lot more at the gas pumps and for heating oil? Fear, like the price spike based on this pissant little snow squall that just passed through the Northeast. We used to laugh at stuff like this. Now? Fear. And higher oil and gas prices.
Want to make anything happen that negatively affects or creates economic or social control over the Internet? Fear. Watch out, that MySpace is gonna get your kid raped or something.
Wanna make kids virtual rightless non-citizens, because you never know what those wacky knuckleheads will do next or pierce next or listen to next? Fear.
Fear: It's what's for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
An digression: When I was a kid, I practically lived in the woods. I hunted, I fished, I ran around there like some neo cro-magnon. My parents loved it that way. Now, you would be hard pressed to find many kids who are allowed near the woods. Fear. Might get a tick.

Zudeo? ATM, Zudeo is a bigger load on *MY* connection than anything else.
Yet I still will NOT break 35GB this month.
Even the XviDs I have been downloading(don't ask!) aren't going to push me past 35GB
Video aint killing sh** here!
Then again, I *DO* have tuner cards in 2 of my laptops... and Media Server software... so I'm not downloading TV shows. I just watch/record them via cable.

Canada must be lightyears ahead of the world. We have speed throttling as well as no speed, petty caps sometimes as low as one gigabyte a month yes a month not per day, no newsgroups email with transfer limits the same as the early 1990's and one of the highest prices to boot. Nice huh? |

...has the internet never been ready to burst? Do backbones ever not run at full capacity? I don't think there has ever been a time that I sat down and used the internet and though, "You know, my connection is too fast, I wish they could slow this down somehow".

I don't see how anyone can deny that the US is not taking the growth of the internet seriously. Our investment as a percentage of GDP is 10th in the world, our speeds are slower, our costs are higher. There is no systematic plan to extend access. People should check out www.speedmatters.org for more info on working for comprehensive public policy to improve this situation. We can't wait for the "the market" to fix this. |

Why pray-tell should this "problem" be "fixed." Just because we are #1 financially on paper doesn't mean we *have* to do something. I made a comment about this on another thread in that our government and country is run TOTALLY different than that of all those Asian and 3rd world countries who if they don't make a buck off those infrastructures will go bankrupt. I mean they're using their people's money to create all that infrastructure. Do you realize the outcry in this country if we were to hook up internet to those who can't even afford a car?!
Why should *I* have to have *my* tax money go to some schmo who can't even keep a job or get a car? I work my arse off to provide for what I have. I pay taxes and those taxes should be going to running the government, maintaining the military for our defenses and various other tasks, non of which include handing out freebie links to the internet. Wait, while we're at it maybe we should pay for every child to go to college. See how it makes sense? If you do one particular thing for "free" for a group why not do other things for "free". When in fact it isn't free, it comes from tax payer money. And later down the road taxes will *have* to be raised to pay for the various projects that have been started and will be started down the road. Its simple economics. Then again we can always raise the deficit. Hooray for monopoly money!! |
