Comments on news posted 2007-02-28 09:29:56: Back in January a reporter wrote a demonizing report on the Nintendo Wii, dubbing it a "porn gateway" simply because the device could access the Internet via broadband. ..

Yeah, I know. Every time I see something like that I cringe because a blanket name such as "Christian Group" usually spawns lots of criticism for ALL Christians, myself included (because I still am actively involved in much of the IT business, though not my day to day job).

Fear

I think we're just devolving into a society of fear-mongerers. Instilling fear is about the only thing that keeps some people like these going.

People with a shred of common sense will know this is bull but it's a pity most these days lack sufficient common sense to know the difference between right and wrong.

Re: OMG!!!

I think it is good that people are trying to inform non-tech savy parents about the possibility, but that's as far as it should go. Parents might know to watch their kids while online, but they might assume playing the Wii is safe from porn. Face it, some parents probably know little to nothing about game consoles.

If parents are concerned, just pull the network plug. ...but they would have to know about the possibility first.

I'm 100% Christian-Catholic but my goodness this is ridiculous. If Wii is bad then what do they think a computer is? What a waste of reading this truly was. If parents can't control what their kids do, it's their own fault plain and simple. Don't blame it on a company who has good intentions just simply making it easy to play each other online and narrow the gap of distance.

Yes it is things like this that give the religion a bad rap .

I don't see the problem.

The Wii can be used to get porn. Children groups want to educate parents about this possibility. This is a good thing as parents do need to be aware of this possibility.
If they wanted to pass a law, try to start a boycott, or blame the Wii then that's a problem. But, if they just want to educate parents so that parents can do whatever it is they decide to do in response, then that's good.

Fear Mongering/ Banishing the Constitution/ etc

Just a few topics people are throwing out there already.

I really don't see what the big deal is with this group's page (other than the big C word). It seems very reasonable. They're not saying don't buy the Wii or your child will go to hell, they are saying 'hey, this thing can surf the net and here are some ways to protect your child if you wish to do so'.

More Religious BS

Why cant these groups be lead by Jim Jones? Religious fanatics need to be treated as a mentally ill. I'd like to know how this pack of assholes determined that the Wii is a "porn gateway". Do they even have one? I think probably not. I showed some friends the browser on the Wii over the weekend. They laughed at how difficult it is to use and hard to read. Maybe the Christian Coalition should focus more on teaching people how to be good parents instead of worrying about a phantom porn problem that doesnt exist.

Yet another reactionary that didn't even check the website out. Must be fun bashing church groups who simply want to let parents know about the Wii's parental controls.

This is exactly what they are doing. They are educating parents about the possibility of their child using the Wii to download pornography. This arms the parents with the knowledge to whatever it is they intend to do about it. This may mean they do nothing, this may mean they won't buy the Wii, or it may be that they just now know to be on the look out. I don't see how making parents aware of the possibility of getting porn on the Wii makes them assholes.

NEWS FLASH!!! The idiot religious nut who spent money on buying the Wii doesn't HAVE to buy it. I am sure any church would agree, you should be reading the bible instead of browsing the web.
