Heavy lifting ?

" The company says there's a lot of work to be done on the networks acquired from Adelphia." Right !!! It also means "dont hold your breath unless there is competition around" !!

yep, plenty to be done

but first...

"...their "DVR-Lite" start-over system will be in most market's by year's end."

...will be in most market's what? most market's homes?

I don't know if they're using legacy Adelphia billing systems or their own, but my last bill said they would debit my checking account on the 29th. Uhhh...this not being a leap year, there is no Feb. 29, so they're going to wait until Mar. 29th? I doubt it. I would much prefer a date, not just a day of some abstract month, but hey...I guess that's asking a lot of the people who programmed the billing system (or the people who decided on the wording).

I bet there is a lot of work to be done. I am surprised we have not heard of huge outages already. Unless they have not done any heavy lifting yet.

better lift heavier than superman

when fios comes around. upgrading all their networks to docsis 3.0 should give them some super strength.

It sounds to me like

the hard work they are referring mostly to is how they will get former adelphia customers paying as much as TW customers are.

Perhaps they should have done it like Comcast did to us when we were transitioned from adelphia a couple months ago.

Send us a hi, welcome to Comcast letter..along with a price increase letter that took effect on day one.

Welcome to Comcast.

The only thing that will keep this in check is competition.
Verizon and their FIOS service is that and as people clearly see, when that becomes a choice people have, The cable co's respond.

Sadly, for those of us in AT&T land however, I think the cable co's laugh at them. There is no fear of Uverse.
According to a recent story, uverse has 7000 customers out of 2.2 million homes passed with the service.

Would you fear that if you were them?

The cable co's, for the most part, don't respond to nor compete with the slower DSL offerings at all. Apparently they see no need to do that either.

In some respect, I feel sorry for the telco's. They have such a huge problem on their hands with all this old copper making up virtually everything their networks are.
Verizon, to their huge credit..saw this problem and responded by saying to their shareholders FTTH is what we must do if we're going to compete and survive.

AT&T, on the other hand, chose a different route. One of lawsuits and trying to do things only part way, in the hopes of saving money and appeasing their shareholders.

7000 customers to date..out of 2.2 million homes passed is the latest result apparently from that effort.

Assuming those #'s are accurate, I think it's pretty safe to say that Uverse won't make it. And AT&T just might be digging their own grave if they don't quickly find a way to make things happen.

Why do I care? And why should you care?
Because Time Warner and all these Cable co's all have a lot of heavy lifting to do in the future.
And won't stop doing it.

And what that heavy lifting is, is raising prices across the board, any chance they get.

The telco's would do the same if in their shoes and neither one are any saints when it comes to we..the consumers. But what they do recognize and respond to is when both are in the ring doing battle with one another.

That's how we all, as consumers..come out ahead.

Verizon must continue full steam ahead with their fios rollout.

And AT&T must change and adopt verizons strategy.

It's the only answer.

Kidding

You folks are kidding me?

Have you ever had to transition hundreds of thousands of customers from the Mac to PC platform for instance?

My bet is, this will go off without a hitch, but .001% of the people with problems, after emailing DSLR because they think DSLR is their service provider, will find their way into the forums to bitch.

Not only that, but they will blame their dog dying, their truck breaking down and their wife leaving them on the switch.

Comcast in Same Boat

Comcast took over the Adelphia franchise in my town shortly before I moved. They've been working to get us services like On-Demand... which we actually do miss!

I can imagine that other Adelphia franchise that Comcast took over are also in the same sorry state.

Not Doing Too Bad...

here in Central Ohio. I am a former Adelphia customer. Actually haven't had any service interruptions. On the RR side there have been some speed issues, especially in peak hours but it hasn't been that bad. Yeah, I've got a few bitches about the way they've put their packages together but all in all, it's been smoother than I anticipated.

Adelphia's property sucks horribly. Comcast also bought them out too, and believe them when they say "heavy lifting ahead". There is a ton of work to be done. Most of the nodes were never split from the days when cable internet first came out, and now both companies want to offer VOD, and phone service, and realize what wasn't done by the previous owners.

Adelphia's networks were in horrible shape, and many users who were customers for years in their areas will agree. The internet was slow at peak times, and the rates were horribly high for the services they got. It's all good though, because you know Comcast and Time Warner are quick to upgrade once they standardize something. Phone and VOD content is standard these days, that will be up and running quick, just give it a few months, like 6 or so.

I wish you were in an Adelphia area right now with a comment like that. You don't know high cable rates unless you lived there. Consider what you're paying now, +$10, without VOD, and an extremely limited HD lineup. Consider 4Mbps downstream for as much as you are paying right now for 6Mbps. That is the Adelphia world, and customers are more than happy to know they were bought out. 10 out of 10 customers I speak to say "it's about time they got bought out, they're rediculous".

Start Over is not "DVR lite"

I wish DSLR would stop refering to Start Over as "DVR Lite"... it's not meant to replace the DVR at all. Start Over is a VOD type of service.

It's a service that allows TWC customers to restart some shows they may watch after the show started playing. It's doesn't allow the customers to store it for later viewing or most other things that a DVR allows because it's not a DVR.

Just read how it works on TWCs website:
or a more detailed description on CT Magazine's website:

In Mid-Ohio we received notices in the mail saying they would be moving the Adelphia customers over to the TWC billing system. Their account numbers and billing dates would also change. The customers would also have to resign back up for Automatic Bill Pay.

FIOS isn't gonna be that cheap forever

When the almighty FIOS is everywhere in VZ territories (worth having that is), I can guarantee those prices are going through the roof for HSI and TV. In FIOS land, the phone is just the 3rd part of the triple play or the 4th part of the quadruple play.

20/5 speeds? $39-49 now. About $69 in a year or two.

VZ is going to have raise prices on TV and HSI eventually to satisfy investors. Then, I doubt many people will be griping about the $44.95 plan for 12/1 on Comcast.

Re: Start Over is not "DVR lite"

you are right. It really doesn't seem to have a wide market appeal. TWC needs to invest in stability (i.e. evening slow downs) on their broadband side and picture quality (i.e. too much compression and low bandwidth) on their cable tv side. Both these should be HUGE issues for TWC execs but I have a feeling to correct these issues it would involve big capacity upgrades they don't want to do.

Start Over is VERY popular in the areas where it has launched.

The stability issues are being addressed, albeit slower than anyone suffering through it wants. Part of that issue relates to the ongoing integration of the Comcast and Adelphia properties in the SoCal region. Same thing with the picture quality issues.

Re: Heavy lifting ?

You shouldnt lump all of Adelphia areas into one generalization. Why?? Here in Maine, the Adelphia system I am on exceeds TW-Portland, One of TW's better performing markets in the country. Internet is running on DOCSIS 2, in fact many of Adelphias HSI network was running at DOCSIS 2.0 for quite some time, while TW is still at 1.1. Digital phone? Adelphia was going to launch that, but the sale got in the way of things so they decided against rolling it out. It took TW no time at all after the sale to add digital phone to our system out here, because of the condition of it. We also have one or two MORE HD channels than TW's own markets up here. VOD we have also had for quite sometime. Sure some of the systems are in bad shape, but I believe the systems being referred to are the ones located in less populated areas.

I have to agree with swintec See Profile on this. Adelphia compleatly rebuilt the system in my area. We got HSI, Digital TV, HDTV, VOD, DVR after that. Plus, many HD channels that TW didn't and (I think) still doesn't have in thier Maine markets.

I really doubt the former Adelphia system here is in bad shape.

My area was an adelphia area until 2 mos. ago.

I know them well.

When we were transitioned, Comcast did not raise us to 6Mb. They kept it at 4Mb, where it remains today.

The only reason I wound up with more was because I had to call in and upgrade my tier..and pay more..for the 8Mb comcast tier.

Comcast also raised prices for TV service on day one as well.
My TV service went up about 8% the day they took over from what adelphia charged us.

Overall, comcasts acquisition of adelphia here did nothing but raise prices. It did allow us to upgrade to higher HSI speeds, but obviously at a cost as well.

Had AT&T been here with FTTH, none of this would have happened.

Comcast owns this area, and many others..and they know it.

Time Warner in Austin is scared of U-Verse. The very first SWBT manager I had in 1996 retired and went to work for TWC in sales. Saw him last week at a 30 year service anniversary luncheon and he told us U-Verse is all they talk about. But they figure they won't feel the heat for about 2 years.
