More value in a Mini for not much more $$$

If Apple TV included a ATSC/QAM tuner, I might, maybe, possibly, think about getting one. Until then I'm good with my Mini.

pretty useless to the large amount of people without broadband yet. But other than that I would love to have one.

Uhh... TiVo?

I hate to be the one to break the news here but AppleTV has no TiVo like functions. None. Unless I misses this juicy piece of information from the press release. If I did then I'm running out to get one.

This is just an AV version of the Airport Express but lacks WAP functionality. A Mini can't do what the AppleTV will do either. Unless your TV has only DVI and that's all you need.

Why no SDTV support

The iPod has been such a smash hit because of its universal support. Any computer with MacOS or Win2k/XP and a USB port could use it.

I don't understand why apple chooses to only support widescreen/HDTV. By not including SDTV outputs (composite/S-Video) they are eliminating a lot of potential customers. They have the chance to corner the media delivery market, especially if they can partner with content providers and get TV shows available the day of release.

I'm sure there's more than enough people with broadband to make money with this.

More value in the Xbox 360 too.

You can get movies from the Xbox Live service or stream stuff from your PC.

But you can only stream WMV...and if you have Connect360 to use the mac, it still only streams WMV for video, pretty useless if you own a Mac.
On the contrary, anything I have in itunes, including DVDs handbraked in (not that I have any), i can stream to my TV.

Do you think that itunes won't start renting movies, like Xbox Marketplace?

Re: Why no SDTV support

It supports SDTV (480p) Just not analog video output. It would be ugly but you can get a HDMI to DVI adapter then another DVI to S-Video adapter. Might be better off picking up a newer TV with the check Uncle Sam will be giving everyone to convert the HDTV. Analog TV is dead.

WHO CARES

Doesnt support divx, xvid or any other pirate formats without converting first. Give me a call when this happens and I will buy in.

File Size / Quality comparison?

Is there a chart out there somewhere that neatly compares the file size and quality between various formats like Divx, Vvid, AVI, and the one that appleTV will be using?

I'll stick with MPEG4 and H.264 both are supported by Apple, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

This site isn't that great but it gives you an overview...

So what about the ISO and vob DVD files one has stored on his hard drive? How would the box be able to stream those to the TV set? Isn't it a better option to just buy a video card with a TV out jack for a spare pc with a wireless ethernet card you have around and just connect it to the video input of the TV set?

AVI is a container, not an encoding scheme.

are you trying to say that a Mac can't play WMV?

Why is this news?

I just checked and the @Tv still says "Ships Mid March".

The whole part about Apple's buy rating going up to 120 dollars completely smells like stock fishing and really has no value to the aspect of Apple TV. Apple is perfectly capable of releasing pre-order figures and have not so all this is pure speculation.

I wonder if anyone at Apple Insider is doing a little insiding themselves.

Personally I think the product has potential. However, that will have to be proven once it's out. The sad thing is that for those who buy the first releases will be shelling out more later for any upgrades Apple thinks is necessary.

I don't get this device either. I have a Mac with TV out and audio out and I just hook it up via a DVI and audio connector to my big LCD TV and stereo receiver. Don't need that stream junk.

Re: Why is this news?

It's a neat idea. Really if you think about it's a perfect front end for mythTV. I'm really looking forward for this device. With mythTV on it I will be able to instruct the server to schedule shows watch satellite tv, dvds, xvid you name it. I know you could do this with a regular computer but then a regular computer is noisy, takes up a lot of space, more money, and I have to physically get up to turn if on oh ya it looks like crap unless you buy one of those 300 dollar cases.

For now...

AppleTV is not much more than a Trojan into the living room... just to get the average person used to the idea of moving data around the house, simply. M$ can't do that "Simply". Or, for that matter, "Elegantly". So here we go.
