 Always heard good things...

I constantly heard great things about this program, but never bothered to check it out - just didn't feel like paying a fee at the moment.

Now that it's free, it's within my budget.

Good news!

Re: Nice!

I hate to be the wet blanket, but public companies aren't in the habit of giving away profits unless they get something in return. Every business strategy has to end with ROI for its investors. Precisely what they have to gain from this isn't immediately apparent, but I can imagine the plan will present itself in due time.

Like I said...

... don't really get off on paying upfront sight-unseen for anything.
Don't care about a return policy... where has the trial been for this?

Trials sell products!
No Trial = no sale! From many people, like myself.

Now it will be free? I may take it for a spin and see if it actually does anything.
Currently without it, my weekly scans(with a "few" scanners) turns up nothing but cookies.

NOTE: I'm not worried about cookies!
YMMV.

I use Comodo firewall. When BOClean is free for download, I'll have to give it a try.

When you try to download BOClean, it directs you here:
Comodo has acquired Privacy Software Corporation. All existing Privacy Software Corporation customers will continue to be protected by Privacy Software Corporation products and will receive automatic software updates as usual.

New Comodo and existing Privacy Software Corporation customers will be able to download products formerly licensed to Privacy Software Corporation from »www.comodo.com, »www.privsoft.com and »www.nsclean.com very shortly.

I use Comodo firewall as well, great product, much better than competition, and free for personal use.

Comodos whole business plan is to get their products out there and talked about by being free for home users. Hoping that they get enough rave reviews that they can easily sell their products to small businesses and corporations. Which is where the real money is.

Yeah, when the day comes that they give Norton away, let me know. I wonder what the catch is? Free Version is limited or something?

Re: Like I said...

It's a good product, I've had licensed version of it for a long time. It was one of my regular 'de-lousing' tools that I'd use mainly when someone asked me to help clean up a system that had become overly cluttered up with various malware critters.

It also serves as a pretty good intruder detector because besides looking for specific malware by signature, it watches behaviors closely and alerts on things that seem to be acting in a virus/worm-like manner when they shouldn't be.

They (NSClean) actually took the product a long way from its humble beginnings as just a Back Orifice finder/cleaner. Especially when you consider that the product maintenance, support, development, etc was a one-man operation.

Will it scan the entire drive for "bad guys"?

I currently don't have a Real Time malware scanner - just avast(avast is "turned up").

I scan weekly with a *few* scanners... but all I ever see is cookies. No biggie, ya know?

Re: Always heard good things...

From them:

"Comodo AntiVirus 1.1 beta, subsequent beta versions, and the final release version will each be available to businesses and home users at no charge. After installing the program, just register with us and you will be sent a free license. Once activated, this license will never expire."

The Catch: endless email about other products:

"When downloading a Comodo product, such as the Firewall, you will be required to submit personal information as specified on the download page. This information will be used by Comodo to contact the customer about the services on our site for which they have expressed interest, including product updates and associated promotional material. It also aids Comodo in providing improved global services by collating general demographic information. Please refer to the opt-out policy described later in this policy statement."

And another:
"When enrolling for a certificate, customers will be required to provide certain information as per the requirements for the certificate product type. The exact informational requirements are set out in the relevant Subscriber Agreement and associated schedules and listed in the Comodo CPS. Some of the submitted details will be displayed within the certificate and as a result will be publicly available. Details that will become public are clearly stated as 'public' in the enrolment process, Subscriber Agreement and associated schedules. "

They don't share with 3rd parties then say they do:

"Comodo will share aggregated demographic information with our partners. This is not linked to any personal information that can identify any individual person."

Same link.

"Customers are given the opportunity to 'opt-out' of having information used for purposes not directly related to the Comodo service offering at the point where the information is requested. For example, all certificate enrolment and product downloads has an 'opt-out' mechanism so customers who buy a product from us, but would prefer not to receive any marketing material, can request to have their email address kept off of our lists."

Comodo Anti-Virus gets a 3 of 5 rating on Cnet Download.com

Someone who installed it:

"Needs A Lot Of Improvment
04-Feb-2007 10:20:02 PM
Reviewer: Reborn master

Pros: It's free.

Cons: Comodo failed at everything.Detection was not good, Avg was able to detect more virus than this.Realtime protection is poor.I got a email with a virus in it and comodo coudn't block the virus. After installing this my pc froze couple of times."

Like I thought, huge memory hog. A lot said it crashed their computers, froze them, etc. Install is going through constant sales pitches for 20 minutes. One user had to reinstall XP after use.

Before downloading free, read Download.com. People will tell you if it is junk or not. Junk software.

You pay for what you get. No viruses, malware, etc. with Norton.
