Whine-whine

Whaaaat? -- no Verizon funded city slush-fund to hire well-connected interns at the local public access channel? No endless run-runs of the last city council meeting; football game; 'lil miss pageant? Whaaa!

"Wayne's World" was (fictionally) a cable public-access show. Not one skit, every skit.

uh....

their basement show was based on public access tv (out of aurora, illinois) and the movie was about it getting bought out by a corporate giant and making them do stupid ads and other things

Re: Huh?

While I don't watch public access, a lot of people do. Since the OP said they were paid, prove it. I don't get the Wayne & Garth crap either.

A skit on SNL does not constitute them having a public access channel.
Since they havent been around for years, I think we said goodbye to them a long time ago...

Not dead yet... I hope

In my area, not only are we paying a large monthly fee to Verizon for public access channels, but they have plans in principle to carry a slew of them: space for *19* is marked off in the lineup. In practice, however, none of them are on yet here.

Slapping head and rolling eyes.

No one is equating their being a skit on SNL to them having a public access channel.

Part of the skit on SNL was that they were shown on a fictional public access channel. It was part of the joke....

Public Access CABLE channels are funded by your local cable company -- in addition to the 5% [hidden] franchise tax you pay -- in addition to any other local sales tax.

*YOU* are paying higher cable fees already -- to fund these 'lil darl'n channels. I sure hope you really like 'em

Then why is the news saying goodbye to them?
It has nothing to do with verizon eliminating public access channels.
I enjoyed the movie and thier skits on SNL but it has absolutely nothing to do with verizons policy.

I'm trying, I really am....

Listen, I'm not trying to be combative or argumentative, but how many times have you seen the front page of BBR and the associate pics Karl posts with them? Heck, You've been a member here longer than I have.

Often, when 2 broadband providers are going head to head, the accompanying shot is of 2 rock 'em sock 'em robots in the ring. Sometimes, when it's a "David vs. Goliath" story, he runs a picture of Rocky in front of the tall Russian boxer from Rocky IV (I think it's IV).

Right now, the story on the front page concerning the world record data transfer is accompanied by a picture of Speed Racer.

None of these photos has anything to do with the actual story. They are subtle attempts to weave a bit of pop culture into the existing story to make the front page of the website more interesting and visual pleasing.

Hope this helped...

Another lame news channel

Verizon channel will be nothing more than another lame news channel. The local station did more than just do news, sports, and weather. Though there were a lot of people that don't watch the local channel, there are many other people that do.

The local station here showed whole segments covering town events, school sports events, town meetings, graduations and so on. I don't think Verizon will go that far.

Public Access channels today

Are Public Access channels relevant in a time where users can post to the web (like using YouTube)?

They should

Public access is a good place for someone to learn how to make a show. If Verizon wanted to cheap out, they can make a channel like Youtube, taking digital video that people send in and rebroadcasting. That way they look hip and appease the public access interest. Their current idea just looks stupid
