How is this Sprint's fault? Also Sprint has 10x better coverage than Verizon or AT&T.

"Talk about getting your lines crossed.

Journalists hoping to learn from a Thursday teleconference the winners of the largest government telecommunications contract in history were accidentally left out of the loop for about 20 minutes due to a phone glitch."

??? Sprint's network is pretty darn small... most of their US network is comprised of roaming.

Merger coming

In other news, Verizon, AT&T and Qwest announced that they are going to merge together for this opportunity so they can provide better service to the government. The new government contracted entity will be called "AT+T".

Maybe because Sprint continues to lose money and execs faster than anybody else in a booming industry. Their proposal may not have met minimum standards for an ongoing company.
Turnover in the executive offices has also been high. Three key leaders jumped ship last year: onetime chairman and former Nextel chief Tom Donahue, strategy man Tom Kelly and operations head Len Lauer.

Meanwhile, with its eroding customer base, falling long-distance and wholesale prices and weakening business services unit, Sprint managed to turn in four consecutive quarters of disappointing financial results last year.
quote:
Maybe they are losing too much money on those "UNLIMITED" data plans everyone loves so much.
In January, after losing 306,000 postpaid mobile phone subscribers in the fourth quarter, the company lowered guidance and said it would fire 5,000 workers.

Re: Sprint

All part of the plane to Kill Of Nextel or what ever is left of it in my opinion. All these agencies used Nextel and slowly they have been migrating off due to poor service.

Which would cause Sprint to be automatically be put back in the picture, since the government contract requirements generally require that no one/single provider can control more than a certain percentage the overall gov't telecom picture.

Re: Sprint, WTF are u doing!

Some article I read stated the official reason was Sprint's bid/price estimate was too high.

Unless officially subjugated as a 'going concern', Sprint's profit/loss statements shouldn't have any bearing on their selection. In fact, I'd suspect such consideration would give them an opening to challenge the decision.

Consider this Networx proposal was largely for maintenance of legacy systems. Sprint spun-off their legacy arm last year as Embarq. The other companies who are still in the running (met the down-select, note they did not actually win any contract yet) all still have their legacy components.

The REAL contracts to watch will those looking for vendors to implement wireless solutions for the government. If Sprint is not picked as a finalist in those contracts, then I'd worry about their longevity (and/or general competency).

I disagree. In all the areas I go to, both Sprint and Nextel have horrible coverage, and these places aren't even in the boonies. I switched to Verizon recently because the service in those areas are covered quite well by VZW.

Haha, that is not all Sprint's network.

That is Sprint's network + all their roaming providers!

The first map looks just like Sprint's own CDMA network coverage.

They need to bring back William Esrey. The company performed much better under his leadership.

The government, being in bed with phone, learned a little something.. they learned to cherry pick their partners.
