| Re: Hmm.. I'm glad I saw this news post...none of my computers had an opportunity to install it yet, with the exception of my laptop that runs XP x64. I installed it earlier today, but didn't reboot it until just now. All seems to be going well. However, I declined the update for the computers at work and here at home on WSUS. I don't want to have to deal with people yelling at me about the computer not working. I'll wait until they fix it...I don't see why a mouse cursor .ani is such a high priority, anyway. Why couldn't it have waited until next Tuesday and come out on regular schedule? | |

| Issues with realtek HD sound drivers On two of our computers this morning, we booted up and got an error message saying that there was an error in the memory where that driver could not load. So I had to patch the patch and now it works fine again. Hope MS tests a little more next time. | |

| svchost error during update for kb925902 I tried letting the update kb925902 install normally, but i kept getting an SVCHOST error and then the system just sat there blinking at me.
I had set a restore point earlier today, so i backed up to that restore point and started searching.
I found that this is a known problem and there is a hotfix out for it. The hotfix is kb927891. Downloaded it, installed, and then was able to install kb925902 normally.
Good luck to the poor users who don't have a clue what just happened to their computers. I'm still puzzled why the kb927891 fix wasn't pushed during the last cycle of updates....

| Just a Thought Maybe, just maybe, M$ has found another way to slip in a little "Genuine" check along with its patch. I have been reading forums and blogs on the subject for a couple of days, and from what I have seen, (with the exception of AVG and Realtek drivers)older OS versions and Vista "upgrades" seem to be the affected the most.

| crash triggered by chkdsk? I've had weird behavior on Vista since installing the patch, but maybe it is related to the flash card reader device driver. DEP is enabled on this machine for all apps.
Every time I schedule a chkdsk of the hard drive, then reboot, the following happens. First, the chkdsk runs with no problems. Then it reboots automatically, like it should.
Then, when it boots up I get a blue screen of death followed immediately by a reboot.
Can't figure it out. I think the media card reader device driver is installed right now. It doesn't matter if there is an SD card in there or not. Same thing. Weird.

| Re: crash triggered by chkdsk? Something changed. At this point, I think it's not related to the ANI patch. I'm posting this for the sake of completeness.
I had continued to use the computer as normal, except I wouldn't schedule any chkdsk--not that I do that very often. I shut it down last night. Today I turned it on. Vista went into chkdsk (apparently it detected it needed to on its own).
This time chkdsk found several errors, as per Event VIewer. After this chkdsk was performed, Vista booted normally. I guess sometimes you have to run chkdsk many times before it finally solves the problem. Elsewhere in Event Viewer, I have received notice of a disk controller error. I'm going to reinstall the "essential" drivers from HP, which apparently include chipset and disk controller drivers.

| Re: crash triggered by chkdsk? Brief follow-up for resolution to problem.
I continued to have many BSODs on this machine. I was getting 0x0000007f stop errors, which are usually blamed on hardware. Memory tests said the memory was fine. Eventually, Vista refused to install a Windows Update (not the ANI update). Soon, Vista got to the point where it wouldn't boot, even in safe mode. I ran DBAN, wiped the drive, and reinstalled Vista on a fresh partition, thinking I would get a BSOD. Instead, it has run great since the fresh install. I think I made two mistakes: first, I upgraded from XP to Vista without formatting the drive. Second, I removed Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable, which was in the list of installed programs. I later learned that it was installed as part of the ATI video driver. I thought it was related to some freeware junk I had tried out and gave me relatively minor problems. Install Vista fresh and keep the redistributable that ATI uses if you have that. Good luck.

| Hotfix seems to do the job... None of my personal machines have been affected (4 XP boxes running at home), but I've had three machines come in to my workplace with this problem. The kb927891 hotfix has resolved the issue every time. All of the machines I've seen give an error message on boot up stating that HHCTRL.OCX has stolen user32.dll's spot in memory. Never seen a computer refuse to boot because of this patch, fortunately.
Hopefully kb927891 will roll out into critical updates this coming Tuesday and all will be well [for people who patch their boxes regularly]. Great to see that MS was willing to release an out of cycle fix to the vulnerability, but obviously they didn't have time to thoroughly test it.
