Comments on news posted 2007-04-04 19:25:39: Back before Rupert Murdoch sold his "turd bird" (aka DirecTV) to Liberty Media, it was assumed that DirecTV would get into the broadband business by partnering with a WiMax provider. ..

 Direct TV

Direct TV is already in somewhat of a broadband partnership with Verizon. Verizon offers a triple play freedom package which includes Direct TV service

Pray

Pray they don't strike a deal with Hughes Net or WildBlue so they can use just one dish for high speed internet and tv.

Edit: I can't see them partnering with a cable company either. That would be downright dumb.

Triple Play?

Do battle on the triple-play front? They don't even have a double play. All they offer is TV. IF the were to add broadband, THAT would be a double-play. I don't see how they could offer a triple play at all.

That said, I think they need to focus on TV, not broadband, since they are a TV provider. What I mean by this is that they need to focus on providing high-def channels. If they want to stay competitive to cable and Dish, they need to offer lots of HD. They launched two new birds last January for HD locals, and I still can't get them in my market. And they talk of having over 100 HD channels soon, but how?

Don't get me wrong, you all know I am a DirecTV fanboy, but that is because since 1999, they have been the best TV provider I have found, whether in large metro area or the sticks. I just hope they stay that way. And I want more HD, dammit.

Re: Pray

Even with such a partnership, using one single dish is highly unlikely in most markets, especially with HD, as the HD dish picks up five satellites on it's own. It would be way too difficult to aim a single dish to pick up 5 DirecTV birds and a WildBlue bird.

Not really relevant if the data pipeline immediately gets you two of the three....

That's kind of like calling Beyonce an artist.

DirecTV does the same with Qwest here in my town. Either you can sign up for DirecTV through Qwest, or you can sign up for Qwest/MSN DSL through DirecTV.

OK, I get it. You are referring to DirecTV offering broadband which will provide internet and VoIP.

Right?

If I'm not mistaken, those two birds are not due to be launched until later this year. I expect we will probably start seeing more HD in the fourth quarter.

I think you are thinking of different birds. Last January, DirecTV launched two KA-band satellites in the 99 and 103 slots, specifically for HD local channels. I know this to be true, as last year when I was installing DirecTV, I installed plenty of These and These in order to recieve their signal.

gotta be Covad

With coverage of more than half the US, Covad is the largest broadband provider other than the regional Bells or cable companies. I had their service for many years and they were really good, until I moved to a location where there is no DSL even from the RBOC.

?????

Is it the singing or the dancing? I give her an A+ on both, not that I like everything she does, but objectively she has skills in both areas. If music and dance aren't art, then what is?

That's exactly my point. Yes, technically she's an artist but we're not talking about @$#%!@ Van Gogh.

Here you go DTV

Choose A or B

A: »www.sanswire.com/

B: Deploy equipment on cell towers.

I don't see what was so hard?

Covad seems like the best choice, that's for sure.
