| I'd pay extra for privacy if the rules work
If these rules actually have the intended effect and prevent telcos from giving out private info to private investigators and other pretexters, than I'd pay a little extra to cover telco costs. But no matter what the rules are, there will always be dishonest employees willing to take bribes to provide the info to anyone who will pay them. -- -- My BLOG My Web Page |

| "Will gretly impede competition"
Which means what? That they will no longer be able to use the selling of your phone usage logs as a revenue stream?
Do these guys have to have their ethics gland surgically removed before they are considered for promotion?
Dear lord, what a contemptuous lot. |

What is this, a late April fools joke? When was the last time you posted anything resembling a pro-consumer and anti-business viewpoint?
Who are you and what have you done with our beloved RNC-bot? |

(I posted this as a comment at washpost, but I think it belongs here as well...and their comment feature strips anything that isn't alphanumeric!)
This is a good start. What's still needed is the telcos cannot just obtain a blanket "you give us permission to..." authorization (which is pretty much already in every customer agreement), but must request permission for each "partner" they want to give access to. The complete, legal name and contact info of each entity needs to be provided so consumers who are so inclined can check out the company before letting them have their info.
Something that would be really great is if a telco receives payment for access to any identifying customer data, 97% of the payment received must be distributed among every customer whose records are included (apply it as a credit to their accounts). We'd see them figure out ways to do all the stuff in-house and for a lot cheaper in a big hurry! |
