So who will blink first?

My guess is Verizon will in this case.

Parallel strategy

I believe Verizon is applying for a patent that broadly includes the concept of a TV and the transmission of a TV signal to said TV. In about 6-7 years, they should be able to use this to sue cable providers in Massachusetts, driving them out of the state or out of business altogether. That way when Massachusetts has no cable TV providers, Verizon can swoop in and set its own terms. This, of course, is only a back up strategy, but it has already been proven to work.

grammar rant on/

ok, sorry to nitpick, but shouldn't it be carrot OR stick? i realize that the mental image is a carrot dangling on a string at the end of a stick, but since the carrot (incentive) is meant to be differentiated from the other type of motivating factor of being beat with a stick (punishment), its confusing to use the word "stick" as part of the former rather than as representative of the latter.

I think the article is way off

In reality, Verizon doesn't have the resources (read $$$$$) to deploy FIOS to all these places. They are just using this to their advantage to get better rates while they work on the places where they already have franchises.

huh

So where in that article does it say Verizon is using this to change the law about picking only the most profitable areas? I don't see that anywhere. They would just rather negotiate agreements with the state instead of 100 different localities with 100 different groups of people each wanting something different on their own power trips.

I don't blame Verizon after reading this...

"After spending an average of 15 months in each of 45 communities to win approval to offer television service, Verizon Communications Inc. has had enough for now: The company says it will stop seeking new applications in Massachusetts until it finishes all pending projects."

FIFTEEN MONTHS on average negotiating with a bunch of useless old fat cable commission members on a power trip would be enough to drive anyone crazy. Its a stupid cable franchise! Congress passes a national budget faster than that.

People on here are always comparing the US to other countries. Verizon is working 7 days a week to install fiber optic lines capable of greatly increasing bandwidth for customers, and they get nothing but bad press here with people wanting to slow things down / keep them slow with miles of red tape. Makes no sense to me.

Verizon saved me from having to pay Comcrap $68 a month for HSI only service. I am paying $50 for much faster and more reliable service.

The anti-business bias on this website is really becoming pathetic.

Obviously posted by someone who can't get FIOS or has never tried it.

More government = less innovation

Gee, could it be that having to negotiate with every town separately and succumb to expensive and sometimes unreasonable provisions might actually be hindering deployment? Ya think?

It's really better to deploy to nobody if it can't be everybody, including areas in which there would be little demand?

The next time there's whining about how the US is supposedly behind in broadband deployment and the current lack of interest by providers in FTTH services, I wonder how many of you will actually come the the conclusion that perhaps onerous government restriction on a privately funded and operated network buildout is perhaps not the best way to promote competition and innovation.

Those who side with municipal franchising are no friend of consumers who stand to benefit from new services and competition.

They are doing this

I work in Duxbury MA which is old. Myles Standish is buried in a cemetery next to my office. The copper is old. The people in this town are old and wont give up their rotary dial telephones. (Probably lease the phones for $30 a month too [joke]).

The system cannot handle afternoon volume and much of the time the fast busy signal is all you get when you try to dial out.

The upgrade to FIOS and capacity of this system was scheduled for Fall06/Winter07 but was put on indefinite hold as told by a Verizon Supervisor. The reason I was given was the new Governor.

They can dangle the carrot but they will get sued when a person picks up the phone and dials 911 only to get all circuits busy.

I am getting FIOS TV at the end of the month (April) so I am ordering the FIOS Internet/Phone now to get the install complete.

Verizon working for us.

Sounds as though Verizon is working for us. Boot the politicians and their tax-greedy agendas! Here in PA we voted via referendum to cap property tax increases, and didn't Rendell and his cronies vote to overrule the people! About 5.75% when the cap was ~ 3.5%.

Next the feds are being lobbied by the States and Local gov'ts to repeal the tax moratorium on broadband! Hold your wallets!!

Grrr!

Equal access and no tax, baby!

Those agreements you hate so much are the same agreements that do not allow companies to cherry pick where they can deploy (within a certain area.)

I would have NO issue with a statewide franchise HOWEVER, Verizon and cable companies would cry foul if another company wanted to come in and provide service in an area that was not currently being serviced by them. This has happened many times when companies want exclusivity in an area and have no plans to service all of it.

Rendell is a Democrat... that's what Democrats do. Never met a problem that a tax increase couldn't fix. (Psst. Don't tell anyone that tax revenues are up big time since the Bush tax cuts)

The question is why is it taking 15 months on average...it's not all government's fault. Providers all over have been known to make an initial contact about a franchise, and then the city doesn't hear from them for months after.

I notice you ignore that Verzion THEMSELVES said that local franchising wasn't "holding them back".

Skip MA - More for VA!!

Great! Just skip "Taxachusetts" and send more deployment resources to Virginia! Fine by me! Verizon's TV offering needs some work, but their internet service is to die for, IMHO.

Just my two cents.

Re: huh

I noticed you only read the top of the first page:

Last year, after conversations with Verizon officials, the Northborough Board of Selectmen asked the state to speed cable television licensing and sought an application from Verizon. The company never applied, and told town administrator Barry Brenner that it was putting Northborough and several other municipalities on hold

"This course of events is very disappointing and frustrating since Verizon asked the town to initiate the licensing process, and the town responded very positively and promptly to Verizon," town administrator Barry Brenner wrote in a February memo to the Board of Selectmen.
- Town of Northboro

Saugus and Fairhaven also asked the state to expedite the licensing process and invited Verizon in, but were told that they are not included in the company's current buildout plans, according to William Solomon , a municipal attorney who has advised the towns.

"The big picture is, it is not the towns holding it up; it's Verizon that has real decisions to make about where it wants to send its funds," Solomon said. "That's fine, that's understandable -- but don't pretend -- don't tell lobbyists and regulators and others that it's the cities and towns that are holding this up, because nothing could be further from the truth."
- Town of Fairhaven

Finally, Verizon has been granted franchises in 45 different communities in Mass. Yet in CA where they have a state franchise agreement...
In California, where Verizon received its first state-issued video franchise in March, the company published a list of 45 communities where it plans to bring service.
Verizon is building as fast as they can, and they've reached the point where they don't NEED more franchises (22 still pending) in Mass for awhile. I'm quite sure I could fast track franchises in North Andover, Lawrence, and Methuen for them right now if they wanted.. but they don't.

How many towns do they have a fully operational network but can't get a franchise in? Since they (Verizon) didn't mention that, I'd have to say it's not very many.
