Comments on news posted 2007-05-10 12:16:16: The press spent most of the week fawning over Comcast's demonstration of 150Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 technology (dubbed "superfast modems!" by most), a few bothering to point out that those speeds -- while promising -- won't be seen for a very long time. ..

Okay, This is getting outragous

I call shenanigans.

Even though I am not in Comcast/Verizon territory, I say this for all Service providers:

I don't want faster speeds, I want higher transfer caps and as another poster said: lower prices

As speeds get higher, the caps get lower.

Nowadays, almost nobody can use their net connection without going over some cap and ending up getting billed more.

Furthermore:

Will they actually provide what the technology offers? or will they cap it as they have been doing and offer the full capacity to business customers only?

As well (if they ARE offering it to residential users:

What in existence (I usually use another word here) is with providers who offer technology that people's computers (even the best) can't use fully? Did some marketer become an engineer?

The Americans won't have a clue what you're talking about. Suffice it to say in the near future most of Canadian broadband will be via satellite internet from America. Only the rich will be able to afford Canadian broadband the rest of the country will be on satellite internet from America.

20/20 anyone?

If I could get that, I'd be happy for MANY MANY years. I don't need some sticking 400mpbs. That's just idiotic because the bit caps would be so low you'd hit them in seconds.

Missing the point

I think you guys are all missing the point. Sure, you might not be able to use 400Mbps on one, two, or even more computers right now, but you're only thinking in terms of pure network data. There are many applications that a huge data pipe can be used for other than just pure data networking. How about IPTV?

I work in a Fortune 500 company right now, and the same argument was made when I requested Gigabit networking to every desktop in our new office. Now, a year later, many of the services I provide to the workers in my office wouldn't be possible if it weren't for that huge pipe to the desktops. Video conferencing, VOIP, on-demand streaming video, etc.

Re: My the Schwartz be with you......

I don't know why Comcast even bothers to say they could potentially offer 150MBps bandwidth? I mean seriously that would mean it would only take a user about an hour to exceed their hidden cap and get turned off LOL.

Customer to Verizon

Hey Verizon, till you can get into the SAME markets that Comcast is in and COMPETE.. shut your trap. I'm tired of this "look at me" BS over it's FiOS service when they only want to cherry pick where it wants to deploy. They can't even get their EVDO speeds (0 and rev a) up to good levels in these "ignored markets" to beat other providers. So, it appears to me VZ only likes area they KNOW they don't have to compete very hard to win over customers. However, on a positive note, I do applaud them on how they handled the Hip Hop singer Akon issue. good job sending the right message to that genre.

DOCSIS 3.0 standard

"Out there in the real world, the DOCSIS 3.0 standard hasn't been solidified yet."

Really? Not only is the spec done, but equipment is expected at CableLabs later this year for the first certification.

internal numbers

For some reason Verizon doesn't deploy FIOS until some magical tipping point causes them to lose a certain percentage marketshare... they seem to like to have it both ways, kind of the way AT&T says, if consumers are still paying us XX% of the market at current prices.. screw 'em, they don't need better.. but when it hurts them financially as in select municipalities of NY, NJ, VA, MD, PA, NH, CA, TX and other markets, they're lock-step in cherry picking to gain back those customers. Deploy 100% of Comcast, Time Warner, and Cablevision's overlapping footprint before bragging about what's possible to easily upgrade to.. Your short 500,000 homes and businesses in your track record ending last year.

more talk

Blah blah. More corporate benchmarks. These companies aren't stupid. They'll talk to eachother and say "Ok, this month you give your subscribers a little more bandwidth, and next month we'll give ours a little more, and we'll do this for a few years and make a killing!"

80% of the country will never see FIOS for another 3 years at least, and as long as that fact remains consistent, the cable companies have no reason to boost their speeds in that 80% area.

At the end of the day, if you want big bandwidth for a cheap price, move to a top 20 "big city", because those are the only places they're rolling out FIOS and the competitors are upping the speeds.

so when is Verizon taking over AT+T

I'll be a happy subscriber if AT+T can get off their butt and do something similar to Verizon
