Compared to a lot of competitors like business cable HSI or the higher end ILEC DSL offerings that's not too bad at all. It wasn't too long ago (the last year or so) that Verizon wanted $200+/mo for 7100/768 Biz DSL.
1Mb up is a bit slow for biz and while I think 1Mb was a traditional DSL limitation I though that ADSL2+ would permit faster uploads. |

4 edits | Remember, the prices are business prices. What competitors offer business speeds that are that fast for cheaper? I pay Covad $160+ for 3000/3000 business wireless at my office and would LOVE to have 15/1 for only $30 more. Alas I'm 19.2K ft from the VZ CO and consider myself lucky to have 768/128 ADSL as a backup (since my Covad wireless has seriously sucked lately). |

They're purposely not trying to max out the DSLAMs at the moment. Since copper quality varies widely across the country they went with 1mbps b/c it was a sweet spot in the market that was attainable. Anything beyond that requires finesse... and being even closer to the CO.

I just wanted to add that CenturyTel has ADSL2+ available in several of the CenturyTel service areas and not just in major areas either. It's available in my city of just 4500, I don't have it because I'm fed from an RT and they haven't upgraded those yet but the speed is 10/768 (yeah upload sucks) for $39.95 a month and in some places that are delivered with fiber they have 15/? (not sure on the upload). So this just goes to show it's possible to roll ADSL2+ out to other areas than just major cities.

Who says they aren't using Annex M? They could be using a special ADSL2+ speed profile, ATM limiter or traffic shaper to reduce the upload speed. |

I had Covad DSL 1.5/128 several years back 2002. Heard rumors of ADSL 2 back then and waited and waited but I moved on to different providers to experience how they work. After Covad I went to Comcast then to Verizon DSL and now Verizon Fios 5/2. Well the only thing that may make me switch is if Covad decided to support IP multicast because I know Level 3 does it. But then I am thinking home user here to go from 39.99 to 149.95 just for multicast hmmm nope but it would be impressive. Anyway, my experience with the different providers as far as their service has been satisfactory. |

If the lines were bonded,yes. if not then its still going to max at 896kbps.

do you need to have 2 pairs of copper wire to get the full 1.0 upload? The building where I live has only 1 pair of copper wires per unit. |

I am done with DSL technology, I am looking at alternatives such as cable, fiber, or even wireless at this time.
If a storm comes along and hits the wire my DSL modem gets fried. The same could more than likely apply with cable. Wireless seems the best alternative I am looking at right now, since I have a laptop, during a storm I simply disconnect the power output even if I do have a UPS installed.
I am sick of losing equipment during lightening storms and I had to have truck loads once to switch my pair, another after doing an MLT and switched the line shelf card at the CO.
DSL can no longer compete in the near future. |

1 edit | If lighting or thunderstorms fry your DSL modem every time, you have bigger problems than your DSL connect. Does your domicile not have a common ground bolted to the water meter?
If the property were properly grounded it would likely not fry your modem every time. |
