Speed Does not Count

I have gown weary of speed comparisons. They are meaningless because it utilization rather than raw speed that count. If a sample of broadband users show that their traffic doesn’t come close to the speed they are using then any increase of broadband speed will be wasted. Another factor as shown by yesterday’s post on broadband pricing we have ample choice of speed this will inject errors in to this survey because it doesn’t factor in customers who chose lower speed tiers.
This speed comparison is nothing more than attempt to bamboozle the public to pay for a government centralized planned, taxpayer funded high-speed system.

Speaking for myself only...

I don't really care for astronomical download speed. I would love to have an upload speed that was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1-2 mbs. I don't think that is asking too much. 512kbps just does not cut it.

I ass/u/me it is from the speed tests they conduct. You did do a speed test did you not?

You don't have to enter an address or even a ZIP code, they know where you are.

Re: Speaking for myself only...

My upload tested correctly or within parameters. My download something so I retested on another site. Then tested again there. Well according to them I may have 1.5 when I have 3 on download.

1024 kps upload speed for Canada? That's rich nowhere or virtually nowhere in Canada can you get upload speed faster than one megabit per second. If you want upload speed faster than that you're looking at more than a couple of thousand dollars a month.

Yo...

Canada's broadband is def not 7 mb avg. I know many people that can't even get 3 mb down and 512 down...

Re: Yo...

1.9 may be more correct than you know. There are alot of local phone companies who state thet 128/64kps is broadband and the highest that they offer is 384/128. There alot of people who are outside the offerings even though they are within the distance. Just not profitable for the isps

You've got that right. Not to mention those absurd caps some as low as one gigabyte per month, over use fees as high as 10 dollars per gigabyte per month, speed throttling even on all encrypted traffic, traffic shaping, no newsgroups and email that rarely works.

2 MBPS UPLOAD FOR BROADBAND CLASSIFICATION

This is the 21st century, and a T1 (1.5 Mbps up/down) should be the minimum requirement for broadband classification. The Internet has long past being just another TV set/pipe to shove information at people. It is a two-way/multi medium for communication. 128 Kbps/256 Kbps is fine for texting/IMing but we now are sending YouTube videos back and forth to each other. Uploading video content with a 256 Mbps speed is a dog.

Canada at 7 Mbps ha, ha who dreampt this up?

Stated and actual download rates are two different things. Whomever did this poll is oblivious to this. You can quote me on this the average download speed in Canada for broadband is about 2.7 megabits per second. This is only because rogers internet just raised their speeds.

Re: Canada at 7 Mbps ha, ha who dreampt this up?

Hey, will the Canadians please stop saying this isn't true? What, you think you know better than the CWA just because you live in Canada and have broadband? Give me a break. We don't want any inconvenient facts like that silly speedtest.net site that show the US is actually doing pretty good. It is more fun to make things up that show the US in a bad light- so c'mon, Canadians, play along.

How Sad!

There are ppl still using Win98 and Dialup. I hear all day long at my work! As a for me I have cable for play 10/1 and 3/768 DSL for work. Country as a whole we are behind. Asia blows us away. I don't know if it's greed in this country or different economic structure or what? But it's something that is preventing us to increase our speeds and move up there in the world. I guess the government is too busy wanting to play "Wanna be, oh let's attempt to capture Bin laden!"

Average U.S. Broadband Speed: 1.9Mbps

Shouldn't broadband be consider higher (@ least 5Mbps?)
and uploads should be @ least 500kbps .Realize this is just my opinion but these numbers or proposed numbers seem very low.

...

There's a few reasons the US is behind.Greed is the biggest cause.Another is that alot of asian countries had no real infrastructure,so when they deployed,it was pretty much a clean slate. There's also bad caps, restrictions, and censoring/banning of sites. Also, others don't usually get good speeds outside their country.A guy in Latvia was getting 100Mbs,but is limited to about 56-128k outside the country, though it may be different now(haven't heard from him in a while).

Although the numbers may be a good way to try boosting the US broadband, they are really misleading. They need to give people all the facts, not just possible highest speed.
