Hmmm

At least 10/30 for me. I would like to run my servers off something other than 768kbps.

I don't need much download but whether you have the higher bandwidth or not, it all depends on the other side of the light.

I agree..

I would like to see what constitutes an average user though.

I'm a steady user (work over the Internet) , and I run on a sub 3Mbps/512kbps connection.

What it comes down to is what services do you use on the Internet ?

High bandwidth services ?
- Web cam
- Bit torrent / Kazaa, etc.
- Streaming videos
- Downloading ISOs (Fedora Core 6 is over 3GB)
- Server hosting
- Online gaming
- X11 / VNC
- IPTV

More 'traditional' uses that don't require a ton of bandwidth
- Google search
- Streaming news (i.e. »cbc.ca/national)
- Remote desktop
- Email
- VPN
- Vonage/Skype

I guess the question should also relate to the cost of service.

I.e. I would gladly accept 10/1 for $30/month, and 20/2 for $40/month.
If the tiered ratings were...

1.5/384 $19.99
6/1 $29.99
15/2 $39.99
50/5 %49.99

Which would you pick, and why ? Assuming all SLA's are equal ( DHCP, email, etc., and no BS caps).
I'd most likely pick 6/1, as I don't need to shell out an extra $120/year for 15/2 or better. If I wasn't working from home, I'd stick with 1.5/384.

Re: Hmmm

I agree. When I went from my 5mb/512kb dsl connection to my 1.544mb/1.544mb T1 I couldn't believe the difference. asynchronous connections should be a thing of the past!

3 Mbps is fine for me

Especially since it's only $29.95 per month.

I could live just fine on dial up

But it would really put a crimp in my software and movie piracy efforts

I use as much as I can get but if 6Mb were it, I would just use that. Thankfully I get 15/2 and am a happy camper.

I would agree that the "average consumer" would do just fine on 6Mb. I'm certainly not the average consumer and being a warez whore suck down data like it's air. Even then I did just fine on 3Mb and 7.1Mb DSL for a long time. It just changes your habits. 3Mbs meant setting up stuff for download overnight where as now if it's less than 3GB I'll sit and wait for it.

Depends

6 Mbps is probally fine if your single and have one computer. If you have 2 computers and a Playstation or XBOX also on the internet, then no it's not near enough.

Also, do I care if a song takes 2 seconds or 10 seconds to download? Yes actually I do. What if I decide to download a movie from netflix or something? 6Mbps isn't going to cut it.

It's not just bandwidth...

...many cable braodband providers still limit the monthly GBs one can use and charge extreme fees above a given level.

what do I need

I need FIOS..I want symmetry..I would like a choice. If I want 5/3 or 5mg/5.mg or more I would a least like the option (a realistic option under 50.00 mo) At this point my only option w/o cable tv is verizon dsl with 3/768 which for now is rock sold but is starting to feel slow.

This is sort of like the old statements in the 80's of how much computing power we "needed".

My wired connection in the office is 100/100mb. I "need" that.

Re: Hmmm

The upload limit was killing me! As it turned out the T1 was just as fast as the DSL when browsing. The only time i really miss the dsl is when I'm using Bit Torrent. It was worth it.

How Much Bandwidth Do You Really Need?

More than I currently have.
VZ DSL shills say 1.5 M is enough.
Ha, I laugh at the FANBOY(S)

Half the sites I go to can't fill my 3M pipe.
The other half I want them to. Guess I need the same size pipe that will give me the fastest sites pipe out there on the Interweb.

If only the Verizon CSRs worked this well.

True... especially outside of the U.S.
Comcast did in the past, I'm not sure if they still do.

Need faster everything

The Internet should seriously get to the point where you click, and the page instantly displays on your screen.

This would not only require more bandwidth to the home, but faster web servers and faster PC's as well.

How Much Bandwidth Do You Really Need?

IM on a 12mb down 1mb up and love it except for one thing is that it being cable the bandwidth saturation during peak hours.with that said i would like to see the ratio between upload and download be a bit closer and and see more consistent bandwidth to match that of DSL,other then that ya more is better specially in a house like mine where there are to power user under 1 roof with 2 comp's,xbox360,ps,Voip and theres constantly being large file transfer and gaming going on at all times

Simple...

I need at LEAST 1Mbps upload and at least 5Mbps download...

I just switched to a business account and the upload is quite important to me as I regularly fire up the Cisco VPN to the house to transfer files to and from clients, stream MP3s from my W2k server and such.
