| Ideal speeds Maybe it's wishful thinking but when countries like Sweden, Japan, Korea, etc can implement gigabits for pennies on the dollar, it's quite sickening the U.S. can't compare. I mean I'm not asking we utilize these in boondock areas. However, Major cities with dense populations could at least receive 10/10 or 20/10 for a reasonable price without caps. After all, bandwidth is cheap these days. I am sure a company laying the fiber in a city like Atlanta or Detroit and selling the lines for 50-100 dollars a month would quickly find markets. I am sure even if a business line with SLA was 500-1000 a month, you'd find MANY takers. Most businesses these days spend 10s of thousands for a 10/10 or 100mbit with an SLA. Since consumers don't get that, we obviously shouldn't have to find business providers and bankrupt ourselves to see such speeds. However, reality is calling. While countries around the world surpass us, we are stuck with lackluster companies milking every last dime from us, while providing the least possible. | |

| video conferencing. Basic video conferencing sucks, if it's run on a PC with 768k upload.
Watch an x264 encoded properly in HD res at 5000 kbps.. or xvid, at the same bitrate. That is the future for teleconferencing, if ISPs weren't so adamant about staying at 384-768k up, imagine the possibilities.
24 bit/192K audio is a bit over 6 mbps as well, someday people'll be streaming that. bluray can be 12-50 mbps, someday people will be streaming that.
Never say "enough is enough." It's reasonable to say "progress takes time - this is good for now, but in the future, we'd like more", but never say "there's no need for more." This is not an industry that stands still because some stupid website suggests what we have is "good enough." | |

| Re: video conferencing. I'm lucky enough to have 1 meg up. I'd be happy with 50/50 though. Setup an icecast server for our little station, host a team speak server (screw ventrilo and their 8 user limitation)
Vid conferencing will work. Try skype. It won't be TV quality but for what your doing it for it will be suitable.

| A moot point in Canada because of caps A speed increase in Canada just means you hit your monthly cap faster. It you bust your caps you could lose your house and other things. With caps as low as ONE gigabyte per month you download for 5 minutes of that month and have all the rest of the month except for 5 minutes for other things. | |
