@pacbell.net

you people are hilarious...

All this union-bashing and talking about how "you' could have done the job faster..what a joke coming from people who are scared shitless to go up a ladder in the fall to clean gutters........People used to respect the phone man back in the day

Re: you people are hilarious...

I agree with you about all the Union bashing. Most of those people have never held a manual type job and think Unions are useless. Without Unions they'd still be working seven days a week for 12-16 hours a day like in 1900 for peanuts.

Right off, I say that I'd rather have an installation take a few hours longer and be done right the first time than have to have it repaired multiple times.

...

My internet installation took about 2 hours tops. I remember because I watch almost 2 one hour TV shows while I waited. I had TV installed the next week and that took a little longer, but it was pouring rain outside.

It's a GTE versus Bell Atlantic thing, stupid!

the former GTE side of the company will wipe the floor with the former BA side ANYDAY.

The creation of Verizon wasn't a merge, but a takeover of Bell Atlantic over GTE. Verizon would be leaps and bounds ahead as a company if it weren't being run by all the former Bell schleps.

Look, I'm sure fGTE folks think the fBA management style is odd - just as we fBA techs are left scratching our heads after learning of some directives the fGTE managers have made.

Many fGTE managers that transfered into New England (fBA) have issued directives that are the subject of the grievance procedure (like members in the Providence Fiber Solutions Center being sent home for wearing a t-shirt!??). There are two different cultures here - crafted by management and filtered down to the techs. Much of fBA is unionized (most craft titles are IBEW in New England and CWA in the rest of the fBA area). The union side of fBA is vocal where the (largely?) nonunion side of fGTE pretty much has to conform. I'm sure the that the unionized parts of fGTE are just like the unionized fBA areas.

As far as "...wiping the floor..." goes, how is this relevant??

Sure, as Janitors making about $13/hr with limited if any benefits vs $20+ hr with half-way decent benefits.. don't see many of you on FOOD STAMPS lately. Also, slapping a fiber optic driven box with a battery backup to a wall should NOT take 4 hours, much less 9 (unless Verizon likes paying overtime). Techs should get their act together or be OUT OF A JOB. There are supervisors who should be watching the clock on nonsense like this.. If a job even is itching to go over 4 hours.. a supervisor should be deployed to document why it takes so long for the job to be completed. Save that rhetoric for Multi-Dwelling installs. I also know a whole bunch of billing customer service reps who deserve new jobs as school lunch personnel (poor kids)!!

While I understand Verizon is a large company, and the truthfulness of statements like this obviously vary from place to place...

This is soo true in my area! We used to be GTE - and GTE was great, had quality DSL service, etc... When VZ took over everything changed. Local upgrades went to sh*t. My area used to see new technology first with GTE, now we're last priority for VZ.

Mine took two hours...

... after a few hours reviewing and upgrading my inside wiring. I would bet a large sum that most 6+ hour jobs involve ancient inside plants. Simple test, does the insulation crumble around your fingers as you inspect the three-wire 1955 run inside your house? Do you HAVE a three-wire run?

Keep shooting those unions

and slapping that 401k shyte on the table. Good luck with your retirements ... suckers.

Yes, they're all crooked. But only one of them will give the working stiff crumbs worth eating. The guy sitting in front of 6 LCDs slicing and dicing mortgages and 401 plans has a name for you I don't think you'd like very much.
Multiply "Grandma Milly" by 10 and you have the folks behind these teleco companies
