greed, greed, greed!

This is just further legislation by the music industry to protect what they care about most; their money. Here is Internet radio, which may have fewer commercial, and the ability to easily record the music......*gasp* It's jeopardizing our industry! We must shut it down...

Pricks...I hope this fails...

Re: greed, greed, greed!

It would be nice if the rate changes fail, but I honestly don't think they will. This is afterall, an argument about property rights. It would be a goodwill gesture for industry to give up this battle, and one the would reflect positively upon themselves, but why would they want that?

If congress had some teeth, they would seriously look at this industries violations of the Sherman Anti-trust Act regarding the way certain "artists" are promoted. Maybe then, since I live in an area with 5 million people around it, I could tune into a decent station without having to turn off the same drone type music thats be propagated.

I just chose to stop buying music period. Now don't jump out there and think I am downloading it illegally. I cut the RIAA off at the pocketbook. And doing it the right way by doing it legally no more music for me. Sorry artists most of the stuff put out there is tripe anyways. Thier loss not mine.

Nope. And this will fail just like the protests back in the 70's where naked college kids chained together in an attempt to reverse some administration decision.

At least those were fun to look at...

You don't have to starve yourself for music. Just visit one of the many independent music groups. EMusic, Amie Street, etc. You can get some very high quality music for very little cash. (You can even get some free music from Amie Street legally if you're willing to take a bit of a risk on a new song.)

I've been buying all of my music from Amie Street for awhile now and am amazed by all of the high quality, non-RIAA stuff out there. So far I've bought 79 81 songs (no DRM MP3s) and have paid a mere $4.45 $5.41. Just try to beat that, iTunes!

EDIT: Bought a few more songs today.

So they go off the air for a day. Who cares. I guess I'll just have to listen to the 1000 songs I transferred from my CD collection to the computer. And this is the music I like and listen to anyway - 50's to 70's oldies.

Yeah - this seems kinda like telling everyone not to purchase gas on a certain day. That's always gone over real well.

Re: greed, greed, greed!

Either way, it won't accomplish anything against the RIAA. The best that they can hope for is that their stunt will get some PR which will bring the issue to more people's minds. I don't think that John Q Surfer really cares much about it though. (This isn't to say that I support the RIAA in this matter -- I don't -- or that it isn't important. Just that most people don't see the importance of this and will go back to debating about "more important" things like American Idol, Paris Hilton, and Danny Lynn etc.)

You mean the music you transferred against the wishes of the recording industry and possibly in violation of the DMCA? Tsk tsk.

Last I checked, transferring legally bought and paid for CD's with no DRM on them to my computer for my use is perfectly legal. Even under the DMCA.

Back in February of last year, the recording industry released a statement that declared that customers don't have the built-in right to rip their CDs even for personal use.

said by »arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20···190.html :

The real kicker is buried in a footnote, where the joint reply suggests the unthinkable: that making copies of CDs for any purpose may, in fact, be infringement.

Nor does the fact that permission to make a copy in particular circumstances is often or even "routinely" granted, see C6 at 8, necessarily establish that the copying is a fair use when the copyright owner withholds that authorization. In this regard, the statement attributed to counsel for copyright holders in the Grokster case, is simply a statement about authorization, not about fair use.
Allow me to translate: just because people have been copying CDs in the past doesn't mean that that they had the authorization to do so, and a general trend does not override such explicit authorization.
So, according to that statement, you're infringing their copyright.

Of course, 1) they'll never be able to codify this opinion into law and 2) even if they did, there would be no way to catch personal rippers.

Pirate alert! Pirate alert! Quick. Somebody call the RIAA lawyers and alert them to this profound act of piracy! It's killing the music industry! You should be ashamed of yourself for contributing to the death of the music industry.

Piracy

Honestly, I used to buy CDs I listened to. I should of seen the greediness of the music industry. Even before the internet, they tried to shut down those record stores that resold CDs. Lucky, this was when Congress was more in tune with people instead of business. Then, the beginning of P2P came about and they took on lawsuits of Napster, etc. I can live with that. Property is property, and stealing is stealing no matter if a victim looses something tangible or not.

I drew the line at suing teenage girls, old grandmothers, working single mothers, college students, etc. Then, they have these absurd rates and try to milk even more money out of people. Their real looses come from bootleggers who sell fake CDs on the street corner, not an 8 year old who downloaded some stupid song. I don't feel guilty anymore when I download a song.

Your way

Vote with your wallet and stop buying Corporate Radio Controlled MusicCrap. This goes for everyone on DSLR (1,365,692 users!).

If everyone suddenly dropped them like hotcakes and take the time to find similar but lesser known artists, we (DSLR) can probably make a tiny dent in the fat cat's pockets.

Only if said movement can be spread to other major websites, like YouTube and Myspace users..

Re: Your way

We've quit buying DRM'd music. In fact we hit the discount stores now and just get our new releases later.

I've done the same for movies. I wait for dvd releases rather than giving all my money to the studios. Plus movie houses suck.

hahaha

Although this is very cynical of me, fuck em.

Let the RIAA starve out it's resources to the point that nobody buys their music or that nobody plays it on the radio.

Meaning when you try to listen to your favorite 1-hour non stop commercial songs on the radio all you will hear is pure silence.

Radio is what made the industry today and they choose now to bite those who made them what they are now. This is going to be a hell hole in progress.

Might as well sit back, grab yourself some popcorn, maybe even a soda and just watch as the RIAA slowly start killing themselves because their means of getting their music known will no longer exist.

I say instead of making it a day, just make it a month, and pass nothing but ads over the air, maybe have those who operate the radio station can also simply debate with callers on why they are not playing any music.

I know this will do little effect but in overall it would be enjoying to watch.

By the way it looks like www.di.fm is going to be shut down for weeks or even months according to their blog.

RIAA response

They have lost me...

I have not listened to music radio in at least 10 years. I have thousands of music tracks on my computer and hundreds of videos of my favorite TV shows, mostly English documentary shows like Time Team. I follow and support a limited number of non RIAA artists who are mostly in the New Age category. When you tune into FM radio and you can't even tell what station you are listening to because they all sound the same there nothing there to interest me. The real problem the RIAA has nothing they can sell me anything I want I already have. Gone are the days when your tape player would destory your tape, or a record got so damaged it sounded like crap and you would have to replace it. When I get a new Music CD I just rip it to a hard drive and there it stays. I have been a steady customer of the MPAA but the last DVD I purchase would not play on my computer. My HD monitor is on my computer so I prefer to play DVD's there. The MPAA's has every right to put DRM on their DVD's but that doesn't mean I have to purchase them.

Bingo. The protest really doesn't solve anything, but it surely gives the recording industry what they want.

What always ticks me off about this rate stuff is how they can force the rates to be retroactive to the previous year. If the last agreement was good until the end of that year, I don't get that at all. That's just pure greed.
