Rhode Island is an ideal market for Wi-Fi deployment. All they need is a single tower to cover the whole state

And by tower you mean TV antenna on a building....

I was thinking more like a broomstick propped up by a chair, but if you say they have buildings and TV, all the better!

Re: On the Plus Side

maybe they could just pay someone to hold up the antenna and that in it self would create about 5-8 jobs to account for shifts during the week. See there this does have the possiblity of creating jobs for R.I.

You are ALL wrong

All Rhode Island needs are COAT HANGERS. I repeat, why go all fancy when you could hook a few together, plug them to a router, and have the whole state up and running within five minutes!! If that doesn't work, hit up a scifi convention and find a kid wearing a tin foil hat and hook the hangers to him. Problem solved!

Rhode Island: "The Biggest Little State in the Union!"

Rhode Island is dying. Unemployment is rampant there and their housing stock is being priced into the stratosphere by people from Massachusetts who buy there, take the MBTA commuter rail train into Boston every day for work and contribute NOTHING to the economy there. My rent in Providence was $500 dollars a month MORE then I pay here in Mar Vista (Los Angeles). Gas and Electric are much more expensive too-not to mention the 300 dollars a month I was paying for heating oil-and I kept my house at 66 all winter!

Even worse, there's a provential attitude there. I lived in RI for a long time and believe me, The Family Guy DOES represent Rhode Island to a "T"! The average Joe there could care less about 'High Tech'. My wife bought a computer education franchise there (for kids 3-14) and no one there wanted to sign up. They're AFRAID of computers there. Just give me my six pack, HBO and channels 6, 10 and 12 and I'll be fine.....

Don't get me wrong, it's BEAUTIFUL there! But it's also the only place where a twice convicted felon could be mayor of its largest city - TWICE!

In other words, this stall doesn't surprise me. Their network will likely NEVER be built-unless its privately financed. And the chance of that is zero, because if you build it, they will NOT come!

'Scuse me? Twice? I'm sorry but he only just got out of jail for the second conviction, and the first, I believe, was not a felony. I do not live in Providence, so I couldn't have voted for him, but get your facts straight please. Of course, up the road a ways there's a city called, um, Boston. And there they elected a mayor who was in jail at the time! My point is, there's skeletons everywhere.

How 'bout your comment about Boston commuters. Buying a house in and of itself contributes to an economy, If you don't understand that, then you ain't too bright. Do you think they do all their grocery shopping, clothes shopping, liquor shopping out of state?

If RI is so backwards, why would a company like Cox spend so much money on its infrastructure here? Earlier today I was downloading at 17MB, I don't think many Cox customers elsewhere can beat that. Why would Verizon target it for early FIOS adoption? Geez, we have an Ivy League school (Brown), a number 2 ranked school in the latest US News rankings (Providence College), the Naval War College, arguably the best cooking school in the US in Johnson & Wales, and I could easily go on. For it's size RI has a number of very, very good schools.

If you didn't like the place, fine. Take a deep breath and just be happy you left. But believe it or not many others do like RI. To paint it as a shrunken Louisiana or even Massachusetts is just silly.

Buddy's first conviction was a felony...

Buddy Cianci's first conviction was for felony assault. With the help of his chauffeur (a state police employee, by the way), he kidnapped his (ex) wife's lover, burned his arms and legs with cigarettes and beat the crap out of him-putting him in the hospital for almost two weeks! Why Don't YOU get your facts straight? His second felony conviction was for corruption-AFTER he put a "For Sale" sign on the Mayor's office door. Fortunately, they passed a law barring convicted felons from holding office, or he might just well get elected Mayor again-now that he's out of "Club Fed" of course. I understand that Buddy and Brad Bleidt (The radio financial "expert" who stole almost 30 million $$$ from his clients-including almost a half million from his MOTHER) were in a band together there.

All the Massachusetts people have done is raise the prices of housing so high that people who work in Providence can't afford to live there. Yes, people can sell their houses for big bucks...but then they can't afford to buy another one. They wind up living down south or in Bristol County, MA. Don't believe me? RI has been steadily losing population for the past ten years! Numbers don't lie.

Contribute to the economy? I don't think so!
Look at all the stores along Route 44 in Seekonk (Massachusetts)-their parking lots are filled with RI license plates. Same thing along Rte. 1 in Attleboro, MA. Then check out the (almost empty) Providence Place mall, where a couple of stores go out of business every month.

Don't get me wrong, I love Rhode Island. I lived there for twenty years (1979 to 1999) and again from 2005 until just recently. I just don't see much hope there. Providence is now a two tiered city-there's South Providence (the poor ghetto) and the rest of the area (filled with high upper middle class and above). The middle class has been priced out of Providence and its suburbs. Even Pawtucket is getting too expensive to live in.

Verizon used Cranston as their test city for FIOS. That's the only reason it's in RI at all. Providence doesn't have it yet, and it's the state's largest city (and capital).

Cox spends money there because people want Cable TV, and Cox wants to be the telephone company in RI (and can't without overbuilding their Internet connectivity). After all, most people in RI hardly ever go out-except to the "packie" to buy their beer.

Providence is slated to have FIOS TV by year end 2007 along with other communities in service area 3, Warwick, North Kingston, East Greenwich, Coventry and West Warwick (service area 6) have had FIOS internet for over a year and TV for several months. Thats over half the state by the end of this year. Providence also houses one of the few FIOS support centers. Providence will have FIOS TV before Boston and many other large cities served by Verizon. The RI FIOS market was also in the first group upgraded to the 20/5 while others waited. RI got the new guide first etc.

Cox offers 20/2 and 10/2 statewide right now (with the exception of Foster and Block Island).

What other state has that statewide? Cox doesn't offer 20/2 in many of their markets so they must be dead markets. Cox offers Pivot here also.

Cranston had some very small area enabled as part of service area 6 because the Broad street CO serves Pawtuxet in Warwick and it serves part of Edgewood. The Phoenix Ave CO wasn't wired for it although I believe they are part of service area 3 with Providence so they'll have it this year. Cranston was not a FIOS testbed, please point me to a credible link showing it was.

The slow down in Massachusetts over the telco tax is leaving Verizon the extra manpower to wire us up faster. If we are dying then what would you say about Vermont New Hamshire and Maine? Not only isn't Verizon wiring them they are getting rid of that unprofitable area.

I live in Bristol and when Verizon gets to my area I'll have three fiber based cable co's to choose from. Thats not dying thats nirvana!

Rte 44 is a wasteland for the most part I believe you mean Rte 6. Thats where 'all the stores are' in Seekonk. You see RI license plates in Seekonk and Attleboro because those shopping areas are closest to the RIer's that are shopping there, thats called convenience and because MA has a lower sales tax, thats called savvy shopping.

RI has plenty of problems but access to the latest and greatest high tech service solutions isn't one of them.

Sprint has listed RI as part of their 1st quarter WIMAX sollout. Let me know when LA gets that, oh I forgot you have MetroPCS and Boost Unlimited (what target martket are those intended for?).

Can you hear me now?
