| And the hubub is?
Maybe it is just that the purchase will add coverage in rural areas to AT&T's wireless network and save the company $2.5 billion in roaming costs and overhead expenses.
After all, ATT is a COMMUNICATIONS company!
It is very interesting that this publication derides carriers for not providing rural coverage and then derides them for adding rural coverage. Someone here seems to always have to complain about something.... |

Good GAWD I'm so glad to see this bottomfeeder go away. It has been limping along for years. I was hoping that when alltel bought western wireless they would have killed it but they just spun it out. YAY! |

Interesting how this purchase comes on the day of the iPhone release and is not publicized. What are they trying to sweep under the rug? Bad press maybe for looking like a Juggernaut? |

| That Explains Why...
I was wondering why they sold the CDMA networks in Nebraska to Verizon and USCellular, AT&T had no use for them.
Please god all mighty do not allow AT&T to buy USCellular.
Makes me worry with USCC's lack of wanting to build a EVDO network, why build it if AT&T will rip it down anyway? |

Maybe, but if thats is true then why did we go through 23 years of BS just to end back up with Ma Bell.
I'm just disgusted that with all of the advancements in technology, my only 2 real choices in Chicago are Att and Comcast. Both have good spots and bad spots, but try living in an area where they're both bad!
PS. If they have 200 billion for mergers, then why can't they hire coherant operators to speak with instead of automated systems or "Chad" from India?

Dont think one has to worry about US CELLULAR being purchased by AT&T as US CELLULAR is not a GSM NETWORK. |

| Eventually you have to start buying customers because there is not many GSM carriers to buy, that's my worry.
If you wanted customers and towers in rural areas where there is no GSM USCC would be a good buy, especially if their network needed upgrades anyway. |

Dobson is the 3rd largest provider of gsm in the country, after AT&T, and T-Mobile. Dobson is also the largest independent rural cell service provider. I remember reading that Dobson is looking into selling itself, possibly to AT&T, a few days before this deal was announced.
We'll probably start to see more rural, and regional cell providers begin to get bought or merge to compete. |

| I wonder if this includes Alaska because 4 years ago, AT&T Alascom sold its entire GSM Alaskan footprint to Dobson to the tune of $3.9 million. Makes me wonder if AT&T recent acquisition will take out Dobson here in Alaska as well.
Are AT&T and AT&T Alascom different companies? One wouldn't think so... |

| said by pepperxn : Dobson was Alaska's largest wireless provider. I disagree with that statement. Dobson's footprint up here is nowhere close to that of ACS. Which is crap because ACS basically has a monopoly on everything involving telecommunications in this state. There is extremely limited competition in this state when it comes to telcos in general. Wireless is a different story, but not by much. -- Want my opnion, see »....Sucks

In Alaska, AT&T and CellularOne have been playing cell phone roulette for years. Neither provider can make up their mind whether to stay or go.
In 1994 I worked for an electronics retailer that sold CellularOne service. Sometime in 1995 CellularOne was sold or taken over by AT&T Wireless. In 2003, AT&T and CellularOne once again swapped ownership.
I don't care which provider offers cell phone service. All I ask is consistency and a good product.
AT&T Wireless was a good service, CellularOne not so much. |
