It should be interesting...

Watching all of the Comcast subscribers blowing through the invisi-cap in a matter of hours, instead of days... Will definitely make for good entertainment.

Either way, with the capability of speeds like that, it will definitely be interesting to see Verizon and Comcast duking it out.

Speeds

I don't understand why the emphasis is being placed on higher DOCSIS revisions when lower revisions offer significantly more bandwidth than Comcast offers. The can compete speed-wise pretty well with a better implementation of existing technology.

I doubt it. Moving to 3.0 will likely alleviate the congestion in the areas that send out the letters. I have never gotten "The Letter", nor anyone I know, so it must only be certain areas.

COMCAST-Fast internet Don't make me laugh

Comcast hasn't spent a lot in my neck of the woods to do much of anything except offer piss-poor cable(read-no digital and poor analog) so their lofty plans and "harumpf"" announcements are just another lame marketing ploy to give hope to their subscribers that "someday" they too will have TV Telephone and Internet service worth mentioning. I'm not forgetting that they promised upgrades for "years" in this area raised rates(numerous times) to justify their empty promises then proceeded to ignore us ratepayers. I'll start to believe something when I see a Comcast work crew stringing FIOS or even new copper in my neighborhood. They'd whore out their mother if it meant another dime.

Docsis 3

@comcast.net

Docsis 3.0

I'm honestly thinking that 2008 will be the year that Comcast and perhaps other cable providers as well literally kills off the Telco industry.
Well, except for Verizon and their FIOS service that is, which will be the true competitor to what Comcast has in store.

Think about this for a minute...and these statements the company is now making.

"who insists the process should be no harder than the migration from DOCSIS 1.0 to 1.1. "

"CEO Brian Roberts recently demonstrated 150 Mbps service"

Think about that for a minute. And what this company will represent to consumers when this process is finished.

Comcast, with 50, 60..and 70MB service? It's entirely possible and sounds like it's in the works.

Comcast, with VOIP now taking so much of telcos customers..it's already in the works.

99.00..one price. For it all.

It's already in the works.

What I don't think that some people realize is that with their hsi service, and their Video service..comcast and the other cable co's can literally subsidize giving away the landline..for free.

It no longer has to be something people pay for.
Bundle it with your triple play and it's as if you pay..nothing..for your phone service.

I can't help but to ask..where exactly..does the likes of AT&T and some others fit into this scenario?
Will YOU..the consumer..even WANT 1.5 3MB and less than 6MB dsl or uverse service..in the face of these OTHER options soon coming to comcast..and a cable operator near you?

Already...the telco's are literally BLEEDING landline customers to death. Every quarter..they just loose so many now. Read their earnings press releases..listen to their quarterly conference calls...they are telling the world that right now.

Verizon..to their VAST credit..realized this writing was on the wall. And told THEIR shareholders..guess what?
We need to spend billions to rip it all out of the ground.
The copper must go..and the fiber must go in.

It's the ONLY way they can compete with this monster that is coming their way.

AT&T..Qwest..and others?

What is going to happen to them?

Is Uverse the answer to this?
I don't think so.

It just isn't enough...to compete with Docsis 3.0.

I know..this post SOUNDS like a pro comcast..bullish argument. And, it is in some respects. I'm impressed with their service they provide me..as a consumer.
How can I not be? Today, I see upwards of 20,000k download speeds. I think they're really doing something right to be providing we customers that.

But, it's NOT entirely bullish because, I FEAR what they might become, when they're really..the only game in town.

I trust them as much as I trust a telco. Not at all really.

What keeps them ALL at bay..ALL competitive..is one word.

COMPETITION.

I ask you this. If a flyer appeared on your door telling YOU that YOU could get 3MB or even 6MB dsl or uverse service..when you were ALREADY getting 20MB..what would you say?

You'd throw it away. It would be useless. Wouldn't it?
It's not competition. It's recycled paper that I will discard.

What AT&T and apparently other telcos would like to sell to you and I, is equivalent to a computer maker trying to sell me a 386SX..when I can get a quad core today instead.
It's very old..and very outdated.

And, it's why so few even want it now that it's here.

What will it be when Comcast is next generation Docsis 3.0?

I mere blip in the evolution of broadband.
A total flop..I predict.

WHY..is this important?
It's because for those of us in AT&T land..they REALLY are the last dog in the hunt. The last dog that can put up a fight.

The last dog that can WIN..if they set their minds to it.

And, I'm not saying I will switch from Comcast. But, I just might..if they truly had a competitive product.

Who will win though, is the consumer. All of us.
Because Comcast and others will fear them. They will always be looking over their shoulders..watching their backs.

What AT&T and others must do..right now..is to adopt Verizons strategy.

They must start putting the fiber in the ground..everywhere..they do business.

Because if they don't..they risk their very survival.

Because the monster is coming.

And that monster is called COMCAST..DOCSIS..3.0

Re: Docsis 3.0

If this quote about docsis 3.0 isn't mind blowing, I really don't know what is..

"In the demo, Roberts started to download a 300-Megabyte Comcast TV commercial using a standard cable modem, which would have taken 16 minutes. With a wideband modem, based on Cable Labs' Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 3.0, the download took a mere 17 seconds."

SEVENTEEN SECONDS..to Download a THREE HUNDRED MEGABYTE FILE.

I don't know about YOU..but sign me up baby!!

Umm..my post wasn't anti Verizon. In fact, I praised them as being the true competitor.

As far as what my post was about though, it was
a)about how happy I and many people I'm sure will be to see this come to Comcast. Docsis 3.0 is really exciting.

b)to point out how the company is now saying this whole upgrade will be relatively easy to accomplish..with it being here next year

c)a warning to the telco's..and namely AT&T..that they had better get with the program if they want to compete with this. Again..I PRAISE verizon for the steps they are taking.
FIOS..is a great product..and to see them go head to head with the cable industry is what REAL competition is all about.

Wow, give me a break......you need to seriously rethink your offense!
People that have comcast know that they're being raped without the curtousy of vasoline. In the 6 months I've been in my house, Comcast has sent 16 house techs to fix a signal problem that's outside, 1/2 a mile away. Why am I ticked?Because I'm paying outragous fees to comcast for rudimentary services (these days)that I am not receiving...and...that Comcast Line techs, dispatch operators, and supervisors are too stupid to see. This is effecting an entire area. And if its happeneing to me, its hqappening elsewhere.
Do I expect successful deployment of DOCSIS 3, hell no!
The other companies also know Comcasts problems, thats why they'll be around forever!

the day I see comcast string up FIOS is the day that Verizon has 100% ownership of all cable/telco's

I simply don't understand why you started posting anonymously. We all know who you are. It's not like people are that dopey that they can't figure out who the anonymous guy is that keeps posting from comcast with the exact same arguments and writing styles.

Re: Speeds

The DOCSIS speeds in the chart are showing the faster downstream and upstream that each CMTS port can do.

That speed is shared with everyone that is doing 5,7,8,10mbit down and everyone doing 384, 512, 768, 1mbit up.

Yes, you could have modems that are set to the full DOCSIS 1.x/2.0 speeds, but would you want 150 of them all on the same node sharing that?

I don't see how it'll alleviate congestion when they all still go back to the same node. I know they'll be upping bandwidth but you'll still have to deal with the same backbone.

They have nothing to worry about as long as Time Warner and Comcast are only targeting their high end services at FIOS areas.

Personally I want to see Time Warner and Comcast do these 15/2+ type speeds in AT&T "nobody needs more than 6mbps" areas and really make them sh*t their pants.

Here in LA, Time Warner offers 15/2, but mostly in FIOS areas only. 10/1 to the rest.

Stop playing defense to Verizon and get on the offense!

I can't wait for the day that we get some really high speeds. Here in Minnesota we don't get FiOS and never will most likely this is Comcast and Qsest country and Qwest sucks.

I'm tired of seeing the ads saying "Qwest is faster" when it's pure bull plot. I can't even get anything higher than 1.5mbps from them even though they offer more and I live just outside of Minneapolis!

The one thing though that irks though are servers going to be able to handle the new loads if tons of people are smashing it with suhc high downloads?

Also are they going to keep screwing us on upload yeah I like my 8 megs down but I'm sick and tired of having a piss poor upload when is comcsat going to stop favoring download so much and get with the program that upload needs a dire push in the fast lane?

Right now 768 is laughable why can't we have 1meg or 2 meg up just because we are singled out and don't have the proper competition? yet we still pay the same amount?
