That still looks big to me, but I guess I'm used to the mini-bump thing we have in our area...
Its hard to believe that that's the new one? I forgot how huge the pics of the old ones were yet...
Now the VZ ONT? Thank goodness they scaled that down! |

Now residents only have to ignore the 6' fiber marker with the bright orange cap.
Wonder if complaints will get AT&T to change that? -- :: my trivial ramblings :: |

They have a ton of them in our area, see them activating them daily. They are seriously huge, technology doesn't bother me but I can totally understand why people would be extremely annnoyed. |

How is that still big? I have seen several of these in my area, they are slightly smaller than the SAI sitting right next to it... |

They are half as high as I am, and slightly smaller than a SAI x-box, how is that still huge? |

1 edit | reply to wee96 Agreed. I see a lot of the huge beige boxes popping up all over my city too. Well, in the areas with decent non-ghetto homes anyway. It's funny, they have similar boxes the size of a station wagon installed across the street from the telecom I work for. I know we hand off some pretty big circuits to them (OC-48's, OC-192's in the near future too I think) but still, there has to be a decent amount of spare room in that enclosure for future expansion or something...

| Good move on ATT's part...
I applaud this move on ATT's part to try to use smaller and less intrusive VRADS. Large utility boxes, whether telco, cable or power, have a whole list of negative items that can come with them - affect neighborhood appearance, create safety issues if placed wrong (blocking line of sight at an intersection or the end of driveway, etc.), hurting property value, etc. -- Prove it... Save the Internet Time (NTP) service, use the pool. |

| Smaller U-Verse Boxes = 52bp
According to AT&T, the newer boxes are the model "52bp". They are 48" tall vs. 63" tall for the older "52b" boxes.
AT&T says that unless a city requests the older, taller 52b box, all new construction will feature the lower profile 52bp boxes.
AT&T is also offering the installation of landscaping adjacent to the boxes to screen their appearance.
Finally, some cities are insuring that the vents point away from the homes in the area. That means the fan noise in the boxes radiate towards the street vs. towards the home. |

| Mini Box
I just had one of those boxes installed just across the street from my apartment. I thought it belonged to Comcast but I guess it's AT&T. The only problem is that we have had a hole in the ground next to it for 4 month. How hard is it for them to finish the install and replant grass. -- Yes, its stuck in a windows this time. |

I assume you mean a cabinet that is about 12'x6'x6'. Those cabinets are a completely different technology and/or completely different usage than the FTTN VRADs. That box is engineered to service an area about 12 times larger than the VRAD is today. Of course, distance is everything in FTTN, so they are setup for the wrong network. |

1 edit | They are really only about 4 feet tall, sure its not exactly half my height, but you get the idea, they are still much smaller than the 52B, slightly smaller than the SAI...what is the big deal?
I don't see too many people whining that their telco put a SAI in their neighborhood... |
