why?

The six-figure question is, why? Anyway I'd like to bid: I'll do it for high five figures.

Once embedded, the Sprint logo will be attached to the files forever and will appear alongside Plies' name and the song title on the screen of a desktop computer, iPod, cellphone or any other digital music player.
Hoo boy, there's a tall claim.

Probably in the most annoying way possible.

yes, of course. but what kind of goof would download an .EXE from a P2P system that has mostly music? so i wonder how they would reach their customers. I think SOME .mp3's or WMV's can have embedded stuff that might show a small window on windows media player, but nothing like an all-powerful regular pop up.

You'd be very surprised.

Here's the thing

Since AR and media defender have already released trojans and have tried to destroy P2P networks...how can they be trusted at all?

Biggest mistake they could ever make was to try and poison the network and THEN try and make money off of it.

Yay ads!

As someone else so nicely quoted:

"Once embedded, the Sprint logo will be attached to the files forever ..snip..."

Oh really? AFAIK, MP3 Standard, AAC and FLAC do not define a mechanism for "attaching" a logo "permanently" to any of MY music files.

What...are they going to use their logo as the album art, and then put
NOTE: Once downloaded, please right click, go to properties, check read only - and enjoy the advertising!
No...they will want to make sure that they shove it down our your throats (wont ever hit my machines!).

Can WMA w/ DRM accomplish this? Possibly via the "plugins"...like a popup system? Maybe they will take a queue from sony and put a rootkit in your machine which is always scanning for the "free track" and when it finds it - BAM - your desktop background is now an advertisement!

Hahaha...more than likely it's going to be some EXE wrapped around a MP3...and the first time someone complains it won't play on an iPod, tech support will say "ok...on the iPod...click start > run > and we are going to browse for the mp3".

Another one of these useless programs to "give the consumer the shaft more!" is a complete an utter waste of time.....usually due to the fact of the technology incompetence of the execs who come up with this idea. You just KNOW that the IT department didn't hear about the aforementioned quote...and is reading all about it in the paper this morning. Soon to go to the boss and go "well...you didn't mention the part about an ad ALWAYS being displayed".

EDIT: Hey...this company can do it...lets go for it!

Justin: setup some of those xxx sites that pay you X cents a click, and I'll put "goto dslreports.com/fuckthisidea and signup for our FREE service to get the password to this zip file containing new tracks!". All in exchange for 30% of the revenue! Oh wait....people already do this, the site either nukes it, or comments are "password s*it! Don't download". Oh I should just send sprint a couple hundred links to these torrents with passwords. Same concept...same hatred...

"Media Defender will push 16 million Plies song files.."

Where do they get these outrageous numbers? Are they expecting every p2p user to download this? They probably figure it's like handing out free money at Times Square. I mean which p2p user can resist Piles' song embedded with Sprint ads?

Hmm

Since it must be compatible with iPods more than likely the files will be locked from editing and the Sprint logo will appear as album art.

If that's the case I applaud Sprint for at least trying to see a benefit of using P2P, but I still do not understand how exactly will they get a six figure fee unless they plan to provide a link to download a higher quality version of the song which will generate revenue, or if this is a alternative to radio, as a means of advertisement.

The way I understood it, Sprint are PAYING MediumDefector a six-figure fee. But another good question is how do you push files on P2P?

The real question...

Who or what the hell is a "Piles"? A pile of crap?

Oh, and Sprint, stop wasting money on stupid junk like this, and focus more on network rollout and getting better customer service reps, so you can actually keep the customers you have, and, I don't know, maybe actually gain a few...

This is a fucking brilliant idea...

Too bad they are implementing it wrong. Who would have guessed it giving out content for free by using advertising as a revenue source. This is like a milestone in the history of the internets.
