Not horrible

For me 3G isn't a deal breaker because 3G availability is so limited. I don't even have 3G access here in Huntington Beach in SoCal and you would think Orange County would have complete coverage.

But its great to be in the middle of nowhere and still have EDGE coverage.

Very cool data collection.

Awesome job! Nice investigative work.

Might be a bit of trouble, but I would love to see how the other networks measure up- Mind running the same report on Sprint/Nextel, Verizon, and T-Mobile networks?

Re: Not horrible

Were they all iPhones that this test ?

Huntington Beach should get 3G soon, as some of the San Fernando Valley now has 3G, Santa Clarita / Canyon Country now has 3G.

Word has it that So-Cal (L.A. anyways) should be going through a launch in August.

Yes they are all iPhones and all on EDGE. There was one recording at 5xx kbit perhaps on edge, but it was a windows CE device!

Useless

The WAP speed test is useless for a device as sophisticated as the iPhone.

Would you run the WAP test on your Macintosh?

There are some issues with those tests, as my tethered connection typically shows up as 'myvzw', while I'm on at AT&T tethered line.

Yes the /mspeed test uses DNS lookups and some mobile data domains are also mixed in with fixed, which can screw up the averages.

The EDGE subnet does not have that issue (yet).

That subnet is not by any means the only AT&T EDGE subnet. At least in my market, you get IPs from the same block whether you're on EDGE or 3G. The only differences come in between APNs.

You may only be getting users from one particular market or perhaps from the Southeast, as SBC/AT&T and BellSouth have long had different netblocks). That would significantly skew the results, as different markets are wildly different in both coverage and backhaul.

Edited to add: Don't expect better speeds than you've already seen, though. That's pretty much the theoretical limit of EDGE with 4 timeslots.

Re: Not horrible

So, it's OK that it's not even capable of high speeds because if it were, it'd still be hindered by a pathetic provider?

By the way, Sprint has EVDO in both Corona and Huntington Beach.

i don't get it

why is at&t getting all the bad press when it comes to poor speeds... Apple is the one who built this thing with only EDGE capabilities. i still don't understand why they couldn't just use a HSDPA/UMTS radio that was capable of dialing back to EDGE if 3G isn't available. hell, the V3xx has this and they give those away for free.

Since when? I paid $50 after rebate for mine. Money well spent I think. I love the V3XX.

Since Apple went to Verizon first and was refused, one has to think they were initially ready to make it a true 3G device but dumbed it down for maximum reach to AT&T customers.

The fact most think it will be true 3G in Europe when launched seems to support it's not too hard.

Re: Very cool data collection.

Are you sure, 32.x.x.x is a class A block, thats a huge address space! I've not seen any iPhones appear on other address ranges that are also "slow" - any time they appear on other IPs they are usually super fast (Wifi).

I don't mind that 3G shares that space though, since for the purposes of testing iPhone speed it doesn't matter.

PS: The iphone is the biggest waste of money. It's not a good PDA and it's not a very good phone. Only thing is the ipod feature which could be bought for a lot less.

Yep, there should be other blocks involved unless they've changed things in the last couple of weeks.

AFAICT the 32.0.0.0/8 is one of the old AT&T's blocks.

Interestingly, I am getting one of the 32/8 addresses at the moment on my E62. They may have finally moved all the markets over to the "new" block. A week ago I was getting IPs from the 166.128.0.0/9 block. (166.132.81.253 to be exact) It was the in the same block when I was in Mississippi a few weeks ago.

If someone was to set their iPhone to use isp.cingular, that would also give them an IP from a different block, but those usually reverse resolve to a mycingular.net address.

Re: Not horrible

Yes even better to be in the middle of nowhere and have 2 options for EVDO, and just plain ol gprs for gsm.
