| If your kid tells you s/he can't get a job at 15...well, I'm 22 now, and when I was 15 I worked at a bar restaurant all summer and even into October and I went back the next year at 16. Believe me, they'll get hired if they apply. | |
|
| | | | | VoIPdevotee
| Not to be facetious but it sounds like your kids need to discover some other activities. If you have broadband and their friends have broadband then get them all using Free World Dialup or Skype or something that's pure VoIP to VoIP. But really, it can't be healthy for them to spend that much time on the phone, unless maybe they are talking while using a home gym or something.
For that kind of usage you could set up your own phone system using Trixbox or Elastix (or any FreePBX/Asterisk based distro - I mention those two because Trixbox is the best known and Elastix is a promising newcomer). Put it on an old PC (just be sure you have a reasonable amount of memory) and learn how to administer it (or better yet, let the kids learn, it will give them a marketable skill later in life). For the kids' friends (the ones they talk to for hours on end) you can buy each one a VoIP adapter off of eBay ($20-$50 each for used models, depending on what you get) or they can use a softphone such as Idefisk on their computers (free). Run all the conversations through your own phone switch.
Then for the few remaining calls (yours) you can get VoIP service from a provider on a residential unlimited plan (since most of the minutes will stay on the Internet, only a much smaller percentage will go through that provider) OR you can get a "pay as you go" plan where you pay around a penny or two per minute of use (if you shop around a bit). Web sites like »www.voip-info.org have listings of providers.
Of course if you don't want to set up your own phone system you could always get the kids cell phones with unlimited cell-to-cell plans (assuming their friends have cells from the same company). But *I* wouldn't do that, because if they were talking that long on a cell phone, they might have a tumor the size of a melon by age 30!
I'm very adament that companies shouldn't advertise "unlimited" service if they don't really mean it - but at the same time, I can certainly understand how any company would have trouble buying the idea that 11,000 minutes in one month was normal residential usage. The idea that only two kids could rack up that much usage suggests that prhaps it's time for a bit a parental intervention. You are allowed to set limits on their phone time, you know (of course it can be rough if you are married, and your spouse gives the little darlings whatever they want). But seriously, it's not healthy for them to spend that much time on the phone.

FWIW, between 1996 and 1998, I had a residential phone line that had a modem dialed up to my ISP literally 24x7x365. I also had a couple of clients with similar setups at their business.
From 1998 to 2001, I had an ISDN line that had both channels constantly up for the entire time, aside from when one was in use for a voice call, so it was in use one way or another essentially 24x7x365 for 3 years.
These days, I guarantee the phone company couldn't care less, as they all bought a bunch more switch capacity for dialup that is now going unused as people switch to cable modems and DSL, leaving them with more excess capacity than they've ever had.

They've grown nice and slow to not get in the trouble that SR did, they haven't given away phones, etc to add to their losses either. I think this has been the big difference between VT and SR. SR was forever giving away free years, equipment, etc. All the hallmarks of a startup burning through money. On the other hand, VT has charged for equipment shipping (if you weren't BYOD), activation (unless you signed a longer contract), and limited teh free years from time to time as the influx of customers grew. If things were growing too fast, they pulled the free year to slow down the registrations until their network could handle it. They have gone through some growing pains with a few of their server upgrades, but all in all I've been happy with the quality of service and support. -- Go Colts

| SunRocket is dead I was an employee they retained through the "transition" period which basically lasted one day. As of 10:30 AM all emplyees were let go. As for the customer base, it was stated there were 2 organizations intent on purchasing the customer base and redirecting the Gizmos to their Network. Unfortunately if the deal isnt struck soon many customers will lose their service as SR owes quite a bit to several of their carriers and they will nto be happy to hear of the SR demise | |

| This is a sad day for VoIP I feel that the demise of Sunrocket is just the start and we will see a trend with many of the smaller providers bowing out slowly over the next few years. The worst part about this is that it appears everyone will lose their numbers and that is not fair to the people who used that serve. This is where the FCC needs to step in and force them to stay open for 90 days to facilitate the port-outs because as a former Vonage Employee, I know how much of a pain that process can be.
If anyone is interested I personally recommend Vonage, had it since before I worked there and I have never had a problem.
