Methinks ViaTalk might go the way of SunRocket. Their newest specials seem to be last minute cash grabs to stay afloat.

Make them pay, one way or another, for their minutes.
Get them prepaid cell phones. T-Mobile has the best prepaid rates. (Out of the four big cell co's anyway, donno about smaller ones)

If your kid tells you s/he can't get a job at 15...well, I'm 22 now, and when I was 15 I worked at a bar restaurant all summer and even into October and I went back the next year at 16. Believe me, they'll get hired if they apply.

VoIPdevotee

Not to be facetious but it sounds like your kids need to discover some other activities. If you have broadband and their friends have broadband then get them all using Free World Dialup or Skype or something that's pure VoIP to VoIP. But really, it can't be healthy for them to spend that much time on the phone, unless maybe they are talking while using a home gym or something.

For that kind of usage you could set up your own phone system using Trixbox or Elastix (or any FreePBX/Asterisk based distro - I mention those two because Trixbox is the best known and Elastix is a promising newcomer). Put it on an old PC (just be sure you have a reasonable amount of memory) and learn how to administer it (or better yet, let the kids learn, it will give them a marketable skill later in life). For the kids' friends (the ones they talk to for hours on end) you can buy each one a VoIP adapter off of eBay ($20-$50 each for used models, depending on what you get) or they can use a softphone such as Idefisk on their computers (free). Run all the conversations through your own phone switch.

Then for the few remaining calls (yours) you can get VoIP service from a provider on a residential unlimited plan (since most of the minutes will stay on the Internet, only a much smaller percentage will go through that provider) OR you can get a "pay as you go" plan where you pay around a penny or two per minute of use (if you shop around a bit). Web sites like »www.voip-info.org have listings of providers.

Of course if you don't want to set up your own phone system you could always get the kids cell phones with unlimited cell-to-cell plans (assuming their friends have cells from the same company). But *I* wouldn't do that, because if they were talking that long on a cell phone, they might have a tumor the size of a melon by age 30!

I'm very adament that companies shouldn't advertise "unlimited" service if they don't really mean it - but at the same time, I can certainly understand how any company would have trouble buying the idea that 11,000 minutes in one month was normal residential usage. The idea that only two kids could rack up that much usage suggests that prhaps it's time for a bit a parental intervention. You are allowed to set limits on their phone time, you know (of course it can be rough if you are married, and your spouse gives the little darlings whatever they want). But seriously, it's not healthy for them to spend that much time on the phone.

It would be a cold day in hell before my kids talked on the phone so much that it caused me to lose my service. Whatever happened to taking phone privileges away or limiting the amount of time they were allowed to talk?

Good luck to all the SR subscribers.

Exactly, 11,000 minutes is over 6 hours a day, every day, for a 30 day month. That is laughable and your kids have way too much free time if they are lying around on the phone that much.

sounds like a rare case of when the regular pots line is a good idea for at least local calls and 3-way calling.

using my voip provider, that would have cost more than $150 for that amount of minutes.

rare case when all are long distance calls. whats the point of having VOIP again if i need pots.

Re: I'm moving

pots has unlimited local calling. if you get booted from Quantumvoice for violating their TOS also (91 hours a month makes me think this is possible!) then a bare bones pots line for local calls could be a solution. but if it's mostly long distance then get your kids on sip to sip calling or some form of internet calling.

Re: I'm moving

yes i read your post. did you read mine? with pots, i imagine that telco isn't able to boot you from service like most of the new guys are. my guess is that also applies to their unlimited service, but it's just a guess.

i have a hunch you will be booted from quantum also if you are at 91 hours of calling a month. who knows, maybe the same with TW. all these companies have TOS that enable them to make money and get rid of customers that cost them money. you sound like a very unprofitable customer to them so i'll be interested to see how long your current provider keeps you around. keep us updated!

i have been with them 10 months now. Only thing i get out of them is the once-a-month email for the bill.

Only thing i will say bad about quantum is they dont have alot of features like viatalk and vonage but i really dont use them.

I used to have vonage and it would be around 8000min a month on there phone line and never got the boot on them. Had vonage i think 2 yrs. They had caps i guess they didnt enforce it. who knows.

Relly who knows POTS is really the same way with there TOS as voip somewhere i bet.

Re: I'm moving

10 months is decent. maybe they take the profitable with the not. i think most companies used to do that. it's becoming more and more popular to boot the customers at the tail.

pots could be the same, but i think telco still faces scrutiny--they can't shut off service because of 911, etc.

As a regulated service, POTS has no caps unless they are disclosed in the tariff filed with your state.

FWIW, between 1996 and 1998, I had a residential phone line that had a modem dialed up to my ISP literally 24x7x365. I also had a couple of clients with similar setups at their business.

From 1998 to 2001, I had an ISDN line that had both channels constantly up for the entire time, aside from when one was in use for a voice call, so it was in use one way or another essentially 24x7x365 for 3 years.

These days, I guarantee the phone company couldn't care less, as they all bought a bunch more switch capacity for dialup that is now going unused as people switch to cable modems and DSL, leaving them with more excess capacity than they've ever had.

jackoffjill

@insightbb.com

POt's will not shut you off for talking to much. You are not using any bandwidth like Voip does. That 5ess or dms100 will last forever . I'd be lucky if i ever get to change a line card ever .

Read the TOS.
A single commercial account with minute usage in excess of 10,200 minutes over a 30 day period will be billed 1.9 cents per minute for each overage minute.

I think this has been the big difference between VT and SR. SR was forever giving away free years, equipment, etc. All the hallmarks of a startup burning through money. On the other hand, VT has charged for equipment shipping (if you weren't BYOD), activation (unless you signed a longer contract), and limited teh free years from time to time as the influx of customers grew. If things were growing too fast, they pulled the free year to slow down the registrations until their network could handle it. They have gone through some growing pains with a few of their server upgrades, but all in all I've been happy with the quality of service and support.

I am very disappointed with what has happened. I took great pride in my work, and worked hard to put the SunRocket customer first each and every day of the 5 months I worked there. I tried to provide the best technical support and troubleshooting I could under the circumstances. If anyone knows of any VoIP phone tech support work available, let me know as I would like to continue to provide members with the competent and friendly assistance that they deserve. SunRocket is dead

I was an employee they retained through the "transition" period which basically lasted one day. As of 10:30 AM all emplyees were let go. As for the customer base, it was stated there were 2 organizations intent on purchasing the customer base and redirecting the Gizmos to their Network. Unfortunately if the deal isnt struck soon many customers will lose their service as SR owes quite a bit to several of their carriers and they will nto be happy to hear of the SR demise

This Sucks

I've done enough sponsorships and other marketing effort with my number lately to get a small amount of local exposure. I signed up with a two year deal to guarantee I'd have the number for at least that long. If these jokers totally collapse, I'm going to be pretty pissed.

Just seen this!

This is a e-mail that just went out in the AM. As everyone has said, its over. Very sad day.

Unfortunately this email contains very bad news. We have just been informed that any and all last ditch efforts to keep operations running as well as a potential sale of the company have not gone through and that SunRocket will cease operations at COB today. As such, today is my last day and everyone else you may have worked with at SunRocket. … Regarding outstanding and future invoices: Sherwood Partners out of Palo Alto will be handling the close down of all invoices, current and outstanding.

Well, wish me luck I just signed with Viatalk. I really hope it's a smooth transition & my number can be ported. Viatalk is offering a special for all Sun Rocket customers.

I just did the same also. It's a shame, never had a problem with SR until now.

This is a sad day for VoIP

I feel that the demise of Sunrocket is just the start and we will see a trend with many of the smaller providers bowing out slowly over the next few years. The worst part about this is that it appears everyone will lose their numbers and that is not fair to the people who used that serve. This is where the FCC needs to step in and force them to stay open for 90 days to facilitate the port-outs because as a former Vonage Employee, I know how much of a pain that process can be.

If anyone is interested I personally recommend Vonage, had it since before I worked there and I have never had a problem.

Free shipping on standard ground

When ordering from VT and you put in "shipfree" under the coupon code you get standard ground shipping free. I do not think that this counts towards any overnight or 3 day shipping. I was on the phone with someone there trying to find out if you got 9.95 off if you selected any of the other faster methods but gut "Cut off" from the phone call.

Good luck to everyone.

i thought about via talk too....
they may go down too....
see what i do not like is instead of 200 for 2 years...
they are doing 1 year for 200 and then 1 year free...

they might be there to make some quick money....

Porting numbers

Can numbers still be ported away from Sunrocket even if they're not there anymore? Is there any way of expediting a phone number port (last I recall it takes 2 weeks)?
