I am sure you can google around (no pun intended) and find out about some of the devices being tested on the new 700mzh freqs.
If we are talking about a 1 channel device, I think the speed would be pretty limited, just look back at the old 900mzh wireless gear we had before the newer 2.4 stuff started to come out.
I don't know how much room they will be giving to devices, but one could in-vision something like the new MIMO or -N- gear being used in the 700mzh range, to have more "bandwidth" and thus speed available.

Exactly. This isn't about a service at all, but about the ability to use the frequency. Maybe the auction winner will use it to create a whole new wireless network technology (802.11z!), or maybe they will start their own cell company, with a signal that will much better penetrate walls and trees and stuff.

It would be cool if Google made an offer for all terrestrial based phone lines in the country and leased it out to any competitor.
That would be the ultimate extension of the free market and would be our best chance of finally seeing an explosion of broadband providers nationwide.
Dialup penetration was huge and even for rural folks. Who's to say that isp's would not if given the chance jump to help install equipment and serve the under-served across this nation.

Google is after trying to create a free wimax network. Google is also going to put out a stripped down OS to go with it. The idea being a free high speed network that locks you into using Google and Google tools. $$$$$$$$$ for Google if they pull it off. Google has been buying up a lot of dark fiber claiming it's for internal use, I don't think it's for internal use it's just Google trying to keep the phone companies at bay. |

If it was a private company, then maybe that would be possible.
It's more likely that google is setting the price high for the spectrum for the actual bidders, so the government can get more money.
Google has a lot of x-govt workers in management and a bit of good graces with lawmakers would help them.

Well Verizon and AT&T both have around $200B each in fixed assets, and Quest has another $50B. So that's $450B in fixed assets mostly made up of their networks. That's only just under 3 times the market cap of google, so if you can bid their stock up to $1,500 a share I'm sure the telco's would pounce on those %50 growth rates!
Maybe KKR could organize an LBO? Oh.. too late. |
