Use what's available...

In conclusion, anti-"piracy" advocates are stifling the indie music scene.

I expect anyone arguing for torrents/bandwidth caps/traffic shaping can now claim that they're simply downloading both linux isos as well as hundreds of indie tracks on a daily basis.

I for one know I need a new linux distro every day.

Should the Pirate Bay Help

Hummmm... Now the same industry that chastises the Pirate Bay and other such entities is asking for help.... I guess whether or not they should heed the call depends on who is behind the label. If one that has been lenient and relaxed, then by all means help them. If its one that has sued people, screw them....

Good for them.

This is probably for the better anyway. I'm guessing the majority of the people here at least never would have heard of this sampler had it not been for their need to promote P2P to distribute it.

Pirate Bay Trading Helping

Hmmm maybe Pirate Bay should start there own music label. Sign up all kinds of musicians. Hell they got one tubes (aka internet) to distribute the music.

Maybe we can have a contest to determine what logo they can use on the music label.

I wouldn't say it's the "same" industry, but I know what you were looking for. One could compare the indie scene to that of open source (e.g. Linux). Embrace the torrent distribution medium while it works.

I suppose it's a fine line for indie people, they want to get their music out and all, and for start ups, what better method to spread your sound. It could be an interesting transition trying to move from indie torrent band to buy my album in store band.

LOL

strike "Hell they got one tubes (aka internet) to distribute the music." Make read "Hell they got the tubes (aka internet) to distribute the music."

What I get for trying to multitask at work and type this response out.

Re: Should the Pirate Bay Help

Well, even though it's the same industry, it's not the SAME industry. I'm not aware of any indie label stirring up trouble for file sharers at the behest of their accountants or their artists. My experience with indie labels and distributors is that since they know their music generally appeals to a more intelligent audience, RIAA-esque marketing approaches just don't work; the audience is more concerned about quality and wants to test drive an entire album before buying, not just be happy with a catchy tune they heard on the radio or MTV (if they happen to actually be running a video or something).

Personally, I think this is an excellent thing; if Labrador's sales go up after releasing the free sampler, that helps smack down the house of cards that the RIAA has constructed claiming that filesharing and P2P only hurts sales.

LOL!

I can just see the suits at the RIAA squirming and pissing themselves.
An independent label has more common sense than these tired old farts and sees that P2P/file trading/sharing is at the very least - FREE ADVERTISING!

Not to mention, (nearly) $0.00 transportation/distribution costs of said advertising.

Go Go Labrador!

Exactly what I was thinking. The RIAA members and the Indie labels might both be part of the music industry as a whole, but they aren't the same. The Indie labels, in general, have been more willing to work with new technologies to get their music out. The RIAA members, however, have looked at new technologies suspiciously and only very reluctantly (and with plenty of DRM) did they dip their toes in.

Promotion

About time we got a label who realizes that P2P is about the best promotion they could ever hope for.

Wonder where Taylor is? haven't seen him comment on this one...

Labrador must have half a business brain in its' corporate head, rather than simply assimilate itself with the Borg-er, RIAA collective.

No kidding, Dave! Really, how much does it cost to pay some fresh-out-of-highschool nerd (no offense to anyone, I consider myself a nerd) to create torrents and stick them on PirateBay or ISOhunt?
