Whats the point of this? I know alot of friends that live here in the states from the Uk and they cant watch there own BBC mews. WTF
I have a better idea just get a DVR.

despite the drawbacks to the service, allowing you to download there content free of charge is well great, and that they are using a p2p method to help distribute it great. I don't like drm of anykind but at least this is free. better then paying for a show from itunes thats locked up with drm...
EDIT: Currently, BBC iPlayer Beta isn't available for Apple Macintosh computers or Microsoft Windows Vista

I use UK Nova and TheBox.bz to catch up on my TV if necessary, and I was hoping for a streaming version with no issues as they do for BBC Radio, even if it is in real media, and rtsp protocol. (You can download it with tools such as Nettransport)
No am I going to start installing up stuff that I already pay over £100 ($200) a year to fund, just to allow me to watch. May become popular but I am very disappointed. |

I have been watching BBC America for quite some time and I see in their latest batch of International image upgrades no sense of reality.
They are copying old, bad, American television concepts and practices. So it only goes that they should be botching this.
In this day and age of innovation an entity such as the BBC is falling way short on intelligent design and just copying and not copying the good stuff.
Good try on all, but try again. And again. Until you get it right. Better yet. Just stop. It's embarrassing. |

Theres like 1-2 shows a week I like to watch off our networks. Looks like Id like to watch a lot more of thier stuff, yah the grass is greener ...
Since BBC is a public funded entity, I guess I dont qualify to watch them.
Even the US networks that have online shows started thier video services on limited platform, then (some) expanded to cover others. I like the ABC player the best so far, now that they support Vista, too bad all thier shows suck.

There is one more drawback of doing this with P2P. And that is it can cause your UPSTREAM bandwidth to become much heavier than usual and can cause many ISPs to kick you off for breaking the TOS.

The rest is licensed from independent production companies. They in turn have no interest in allowing worldwide viewing, even for a fee, as it threatens the licensing fees they can get from networks in other countries. |

Yes. I know. They area based out of New York. BUT, the mindset is still there.
Oh and yes, a good portion of the programs have been aired in the UK. It may not have been on the BBC (resurrecting what was once considered dead programming), but they were aired in the UK. If you read the BBCA forums you will see that UK viewers are hoping that they will get the whole series this time. Or are mad that we get a added episodes that weren't aired there. So it is not exclusive programming for the US. And you'd think they could count from 1-20?! Not so by the way they schedule series.
I would suggest that the BBC have them drop the BBC tag, and go with something like CRPAmerica. Because it is only supporting a lost and pathetic cause. |

What really needs to be done is a reform of the whole media rights stuff. The whole geolocation and whatnot really is going the exact opposite way most of the world is going becoming the big one global world and all. If someone wants to watch BBC they should be able to no matter whether they live in Japan or the UK. If I want to watch French tv then why shouldn't I be able to do that from Mexico...
At least for television over the internet it should be possible to somehow track how many people have watched your channel for how long and then based on that the station should have to pay fees for the rights and they could probably even say they ask a fee of 4.99 a month to access that way they can make up for the additional rights fees.
I would say the broadcast stations and media rights holders have not yet quite realized that by restricting access like they are with geolocation and such all they are doing is drive up use of things like Sopcast, TVU and other P2P-based broadcast sharing methods. |

The files iplayer downloads run fine in a standalone version of Windows Media. If you specify a custom directory to which iplayer should download files then it's easy to rename the files once downloaded (e.g. just remove the DOWNLOAD suffix). This results in them being 'removed' from your iPlayer library but also seems to minimise the p2p uploading (and you can still watch them in Windows Media). here's also a config file, "zprefs_db_netman.xml" available -- if anyone knows how to tweak it and get the config compiled into the zdata.db database file, do let us know!
