| | Nothing is Sacred I work as a maintenance man at an Episcopal church and private school in Indianapolis. We were hit by thieves on three occasions this past winter and lost a total of 19 copper downspouts.
It would have been 20, but one was so full of ice I guess it was too heavy to cart away.
On the last of those three instances they stole some aluminum replacement downspouts too. All of those replaced now are plastic.
They also hit us this summer at a couple of other buildings on the property. Tore apart 3 AC units.

| | They get what they deserve. Ha! HA!....
You steal power lines, or anything for that matter and get killed, then you get what you deserve. I have no sympathy what-so-ever. Even if it was a family member I would have no problem if they got zapped.

| | Hot Copper!!! A family lost their home to a fire in Birmingham a while back. The "copper snakes" were ripping the wire out of the house while it was still smoking! The firefighters had to run them off.....several times! | |

swsamuraiPremium join:2002-04-17 Bakersfield, CA | Legitimate selling of copper affected This kinda thing also hurts those that are legitimately trying to get rid of copper.
I recently assisted in the refit of some wiring, and ended up with about 70+ pounds of very old 25pair and almost 100 pounds of Cat2 (it was an old building).
I had to jump through hoops to drop the stuff off. Even then I had to go back for the money while they verified my "story".
I DO understand why they are doing it, but my point is that these idiots are making it hard for the rest of us who do this for a living. They are even talking about issuing local permits to allow certain people to sell copper back without the hassle. I just see that as making a new part that can be exploited. Copper Launderers.

| | They are stealing fiber too Here in Socal the thieves have been stealing fiber also. For awhile they were stealing copper where I work but they stopped for a while since my boss caught 6 of them in the act. The thieves don't care if it is copper, aluminum or steel. recently we had 500ft of copper clad steel open wire stolen in the desert.

I seriously thought about it... I am just too chick$#17 to take a chance on opening a business in California.

ricep5Premium join:2000-08-07 Jacksonville, FL | Merger made Copper hay Just after AT&T announced they were buying Bell South, BS stopped all infrastructure build outs until the merger was approved. Problem was all of the spools of copper were ordered months in advance, so the local BS yards were getting stacked with inventory.
After the merger was approved and they drew down the inventory, many spools were discovered missing. The thieves had simply drove into the supply yards and loaded up. Since they were stacked up so high, no one missed them until much later.
Based on current copper values, some people have made out very, very well.

| | Electrocution for stealing wire I love that ignorant idiots who try to steal wire immediately get the death penalty by electrocution. In legal terms, its known as summary execution.
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summary_execution
I am an electrician and have taught electrical apprentices about electrical safety. There's an electrical safety film about the hazards of high voltage which shows what happens in the most graphic detail, including a linesman who is almost totally fried, dying in hospital, who's limbs and torso are burned black and swollen so much that the skin has split. That guy is lying in his hospital bed, dying and crying while he warns about his stupidity. The film also shows blackened and swollen amputated limbs which look like they're barbecued meat ready to eat. I think that the goriest parts of that film should be packaged into a one-minute commercial and broadcast on every TV and cable station a few times a day as a warning - trespassers may be electrocuted and, if you don't die immediately, you will have to see your own crispy critter body as you die in excrutiating pain and agony. Muhahahahaha!

| | Theft of copper phone lines expedites fiber upgrades. There's a positive effect of theft of copper phone lines, it will expedite replacement with fibre or with wireless. If the phone company just replaces it with copper, they're the fool. After the fibre or wireless "upgrade" the phone company will be able to sell more telecommunication services. | |

| | Empty building may still have power We had an incident like this in MD. Fire department called due to smoke coming from building that has been empty for over 10 years. Upon entering they found victim (culprit) smoldering. There were indications that he had tried to cut the copper wiring thinking that the building had no electricity running to the circuit box. | |

| | Old water heaters and copper? I was watching one of those home improvement shows and they were replacing a old water heater. One of the contractors mentioned how the older ones have a lot of copper in them and how it can be worth quite a bit of money. Anyone heard of this and by the way, are all these people/thieves just taking the copper to a recycling center or something? | |

Anyone heard of this and by the way, are all these people/thieves just taking the copper to a recycling center or something? The contractor meant a REALLY old water heater, one out of production since late 1950 (initial production was pre-1900, we have a heater in the area dated at 1898, still functioning). They were made by the RUUD and Pittsburg water heater companies (among others), and had 100+ feet of minimum 1/2" copper tube for the heat exchanger.
Here is a pic..

My company rebuilds and restores these heaters, actually.. The picture above is of a "multi-coil" unit, used in commercial instances only.. Residentials were a good deal smaller..

| | | | Re: Old water heaters and copper?
Thanks for the information. The picture was very interesting. The home I live in is over one hundred years old and will be looking into the maker of the water heater. It is very large and still in the basement with the new one that replaced it. I am in dire straights financially and discovering I have something of some value would be great.
Thanks much for your response and help.

| Copper Unfortunately, the only way to put any controls at all on it is to mandate that copper dealers get rock-solid ID of the people they're buying copper from, such as a photo + photo ID + fingerprints. It won't stop it, of course, but it'll cut down on it some. | |
