Irresistible baiting attempt Apple users don't worry about agreements.
They just naturally assume that since its from Apple there won't be any problems.

Re: obvious question, but...
said by Necronomikro:The question is... how can you use that much data on EDGE? LOL. Or as most of the folks around here call it sluDGE.
585MB of usage over 2 weeks.
Edit: That assumes the bill was entirely for data. There's probably quite a few phone calls mixed in there as well.

How does a self-admitted "web developer" not know how large a kilobyte is or how large an average web page is
The problem here is advertising rates that are $.005 per anything. Americans can't handle the math, we don't
think do small. If it had been marketed as $5 per Meg chances are he would have had a firmer grasp on the true cost. Still, he did the time, pay the crime.

There is no way that guy goes through 600MB while knowing it's a pay per use plan.

| Yeah, for some stupid reason whenever you make a billing change you can no longer track your usage until the next billing cycle. For that reason alone AT&T should offer this guy some credit. |
quote:True, but the iPhone can't easily tether. Perhaps he was using a lot of Google Maps (quite a possibility if travelling) and didn't realize the significant amount of data usage he was pulling. I agree though, 600MB of data is pretty impressive usage on a cell device, especially over EDGE.
At .005/KB and 3,000, that's about 600MB. 600 megabytes isn't incidental browsing. At 30-100KB per page, that's 6,000-18,000 page views. That's a LOT of browsing.

maybe the conversation sounded like this: One side of the phone conversation between iPhone owner and the AT&T rep:
I bought an iPhone last month. I have a question about my bill.
Yah, um, its three thousand bucks.
Yes, I know I'm a dumbass for spending $600 on a cell phone.
Yes, I know that I'm a virgin.
Well, can you do something about this charge anyway?
Okay, yes, I'm a fool. I get it, yes.
Now, about the bill?
So you're saying that Steve Jobs approved the bill so I have to pay it?
But I didn't...
Wait, you say Steve also rubbed each and every iPhone against his crotch before they boxed them up?
Oh, that's just foul man. I had that in the bathroom!"

iPh0wn3d? How could he even use that much data? I mean seriously, the transfer rate on the iPhone is slow. He didn't tether it. Unless he visited Europe with his eyes glued to his phone...and missed taking in the sights while there, how did he rack up that much usage? That's roughly 600MB of data transferred!
I stream music to my PPC6700 ALL WORK DAY at 128kbps. That's only a bit over 460MB of data tranferred, but I'm not interacting with my phone the whole time. For him to use that much data, he'd have to be holding the phone, looking at it, and manipulating it. Did he really have that much time to surf the web, download email with huge attachments, and send email of photos taken with a phone in a two week span to rack up that much usage?
....or, does checking voicemail on the iPhone come into play here?

Pay the Death Star or the empire will shoot your iPhone OK, first of all, this dunce should have read the freakin' contract before doing this. Agreements are agreements, and contracts are contracts. They're just as binding on the carrier as they are on the customer.
But, this is why I just frigging HATE AT&T..WAIT, STOP THE PRESSES
I just read the guy's letter. What a douche. You don't know how many KB a web page in, but you're a web developer? Shit, I don't even work in the computer business, and I know how many KB on average a web site can soak up, depending on what's on it.
I think this guy's watched too much skateboarding dog.

You're stupid, but you blame it on them? I liked this line.
"The rep quoted me $.005 per KB but did not disclose what that would translate to in layman's language (i.e., X amount per e-mail, X amount per web page, etc.)."
Followed by: "I'm a web developer"
But he doesn't know how large a webpage, SMS, or email message is? Are you kidding? This guy is obviously not going to find much work from anyone reading the article.
Later he says he did check usage online, and the data wasn't available. Well.. duh. I don't know if I can truly fault the guy for this, but with pretty much any US provider, any international charges won't show up until processed by the local carrier, which, in my experience, takes at least a day, if not a week.
Then of course he goes on whining about discriminating against iPhone users internationally, and about how you can't unlock the phone, blah blah blah.
Basically, he bought a fancy 'toy', and wants business rules to apply. The BB has to be the top business phone out there, and of course AT&T is going to be competitive with the rates.
Why bother being competitive with the iPhone rate?
