Definitely. Although we didn't have a cell with us, we still researched everything else from credit card fees, excess baggage charges, taxes/fees, etc, etc, along with "traditional" stuff like power adapters and transformers and passports. The end result was a trip with no curve balls or surprises. Apparently this guy thinks that the rules don't apply to him.

Cry me a river buddy

I spent two weeks in Europe last summer (honeymoon), and I brought along my Tmobile Pocket PC Phone. I clearly read and noted that all incoming and outgoing calls were between $.99 and $1.19 per minute based on where I was going to be. I also noted the rates they charged for data. Based upon this, I was annoyed (but not shocked or confused like this "person") when a bill arrived for over $600 upon my return to the states. The moral of the story? Dont be an idiot and read your contract**!! I have no sympathy whatsoever for this guy. The fact that he actually wrote a letter complaining to someone about it makes him an even bigger loser in my mind.

data charges

developer or ignorant - it doesn't matter...

blah blah, he should have read his bill... Big F'n Deal.

Although I feel his pain, he should have known to be more careful... but on the same note, WHY would they ALLOW it to get that high of an amount for his bill???? (my reasoning... they know he has good credit, and he'll pay the bill, even if he doesn't like it... unlike those with bad credit who get cut off for being two day late.

They charge an outrageous amount for roaming data, AND an outragious amount for overage on data.

If i want 'unlimited' LOCAL data (not roaming), the best i can get in Canada is 500MB for $210 / MONTH!!!! (or $100 for 200MB & $60 for 25 MB. And if you go OVER that the overage ranges from $21 per MB to $5 PER mb depending on the plan.

Or if i'm in the USA, i can get unlimited data for $59. And if i'm not mistaken, you get a bunch of minutes with that.

Oh and don't forget the, SYSTEM ACCESS CHARGE / 911 Charge / AND NETWORK ACCESS CHARGE (yep, for the data usage, but we get a matching credit for that one. ($10))...

ATT Release New International Data Plan for iPhones

Seriously, it only makes sense. They bill the damn thing in their advertising as a media device that uses EDGE for connectivity, they might as well offer a plan for a reasonable price that allows their customers to use it.

I think this guy merely got caught by ATT's myopia. I don't think they ever expected people to take it out of the US for some reason.

Yeah right

Something is just not right and is missing in the story.

Was the phone lost, left on?

Did he not know the plan wasn't unlimited?

Did he not know that international roaming and data are HIGH? He would have been better off getting a pre-paid SIM in the other country (provided he knew where and how to unlock th iPhone.

That said, he has the resources to buy a $500-$600 phone....

Read your plan details before signing a contract folks!!

This wouldn't be the first.

I can relate. Before AT&T bought cingular I was hit with a $1,000.00 data charge and my crappy sony-ericson didn't have such capablity

International Data

There is no wonderful solution to international data and I've searched. In the UK and Italy there are good prepaid solutions, but these are the exceptions not the rule.

IPhone Data is not comparable to Blackberry data. ATT's international plan for Blackberry was only for the e-mails. You could get away with some wap browsing if you were connected to a Blackberry enterprise server, but if your data usage did not go through the Blackbery APN, you were paying $15 a meg. Yes, you could sneak a little by if you were careful, but that is like asking why is a Ferrari cost $100,000 when the tools to steal one only cost $200.

ATT's international data usage is about the best thing there is. The 20 megs of international data also reduces your extra data consumption from $15 per meg to $5 per meg.

None of the roaming SIMs have come up with anything approaching affordable data. Wind's MEGA no limits was the only exception to this and they closed that plan down in a hurry.

The other part of the data issue is the rounding and unit of billing. It is often not the megs you use by how they are computed.

With respect to the iPhone's strict locking policy being unfair I completely agree and for me this was a deal breaker.

PS: the fanboy thing above was funny, though. You'd think people who suckle at the Jobian teet would have more sense. On the other hand, peruse ATM for an hour . . .

They waived the charges...

According to an email I recieved from the person in question here, AT&T just waived the entire charge for him.

"Word travels fast over the internet...

AT&T just called and agreed to waive all charges due to the "miscommunication." I think they have a customer for life now!"

Now that really does suck big time.

Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if I posted my att/Cingular bill on-line each month and whined about the international calls?

The lesson learned is that whining pays, considering that AT&T gave him a full refund.

screw you people

Look, first of all.. your DUMB for not doing your homework about buying (or deciding about) the product in the first place..

We'll forgo the stupidity of buying an iphone in the first place and go for the jugular of AT&T / Apple's predatory nature of finding poor technology illiterate schmucks who think that buying their way into the "hoopla product of the century" that they will win some popularity contest (with the fly population) who otherwise would be buzzing my dog's SHIT.

Next, these two predatory companies will take you over a barrel faster than a mark at a poker game for all your money. Screw Las Vegas when you've got AT&T / Apple team up against the lowly illiterate consumer who signed the two year deal with a two faced technology company and the worst of the telcos.

I've said it before and I'll say it again (as much as it takes). STOP FEEDING THE GREEDY CORPORATIONS WHO DO NOT DESERVE YOUR MONEY. FIND SOME POOR GRIEVING FAMILY WHO LOST A LOVED ONE IN IRAQ AND GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY INSTEAD.

A $40 stock price jump in Apple's stock over a PIECE OF SHIT CELL PHONE is an great indication that our country is going to SHIT. I personally don't own stock in ANY company and could give a shit about what you think of my motives for griping about Apple's stock.

There are companies who don't deserve your money, and these are two of them... and if people would open their eyes instead of taking the vertically integrated hype machine that is WALL STREET BANKER DRIVEN you'd see what a mistake you've just made... they just got your $3,000 (along with the regular $2k+ for the voice/data package) Hope your Happy.

it is beyond belief

I have read most of your posts and I do not agree with most.
It is a phone. It can surf the web and download email, yeah so. I don't think any cell phone should ever cost 3000 a month
in any case. I know someone could abuse the features of the phone but I don't think the guy in ? did. All i am trying to say is wireless (and wired) carriers charge way way to much for what u really get. 3000 for one month no way
