Comments on news posted 2007-08-04 13:59:32: About a year ago, legislation was passed legalizing President Bushs warrantless wiretapping program. It was good news for the telcos that had been cooperating with the wiretap but bad news for the privacy of American citizens. ..

| Wiretapping If the first page of the article (it was 2 pages on the web site) is correct, and the USA law is as the article says, then this is the military and/or NSA looking at foreigners talking: this is not about criminals at all. Criminals don't have anything to fear from this at all, except for the foreign-related ones. The ones that have something to fear from this legislation are foreign terrorists. It doesn't seem to go far enough in theory regarding domestic ones. (I really don't care about foreign-related criminals' well being.)
However, non-criminals (and I suppose also criminals) do have plenty to worry about in general with these spy things: we should be careful to make sure they are used appropriately, making sure that we do the relevant spying necessary to keep a fairly sane stable healthy citizenry and nation while at the same time not doing corrupt spying.
I see these issues fairly strongly: we need to seperate corrupt spying from non-corrupt spying, and do the necessary non-corrupt spying and not do the corrupt spying. Failing at either one, or worse, failing at both, would be horrible for our citizenry and nation. | |
