Comments on news posted 2007-08-16 16:35:05: Though our French is a little rusty, Canadian broadband provider Videotron has e-mailed their customers to let them know that starting October 1st, the company will be imposing a monthly 100GB cap (downstream and upstream combined) on their 10Mbps "E.. ..

Fees could REALLY rise quickly with those charges

Users who go above the 100GB limit will pay an additional $1.50 (Canadian) per gigabyte.
If you are very heavy user, at those prices, your monthly cable bill could double pretty easily. Users of Videotron will have to keep a close eye on usage.

is there a limit as to how much they will charge you for excess useage? Bell charges upto 30$ max for bandwidth charges.

This might be a good idea....

I don't download that much a month, so that may sway my opinion on this...

Anyway, a cap and then a way to exceed the cap if you so choose is actually a good idea. Well, a good idea if it is meant to calm some of the bandwidth hogs.

My only concern is when the average user is downloading more than 100GB monthly on average then the cap should increase and their network should have been previously upgraded to handle it.

If this is a way for the ISP delay a needed upgrade then I think it's a terrible plan...

Re: bandwidth charges limit?

Here is the translation (courtesy of Google):

For this reason, you profit from an unlimited capacity of remote loading, which from now on will be established has 100Gb combined (downstream/upstream), that is to say a limit of consumption which should answer amply has your needs. Thus, from October 1 next, there will be combined expenses for consumption exceeding the monthly limit of 100Gb. These expenses will be surplus 1,50$ by gigaoctet.

Honest

At least you know up front what your limit is. I'd rather that than some mysterious unknown "unlimited" cap.

I agree... If ISPs are going to cap their users, they should at least post what those caps are so that existing and perspective users can make educated decisions about whether or not they will use the service.

 New cap = crap

I appreciate Karl's posting of this, but Karl, you should redo it again sometime in the morning once you get a hold of the English letter cause now it's a little late and won't get too much exposure unfortunately.

We need to make this visible to a LOT of people otherwise Videotron won't feel the hurt.

Thanks for your help as always

Re: Fees could REALLY rise quickly with those charges

At least they price the overage in line with what most places charge for overage transfer. Anything over $1.50/per GB for overage is insane, especially the $5-$10 some providers are charging (it doesn't cost them anywhere NEAR that much).

Nope. There is NO limit for the extreme tier. In other words, prepare to get raped by Videotron as soon as you go over your new 100GB cap.

Yeah it's a great markup when they're paying 5-10 cents per gig.

If 50 dollars buys you 100 gigs and it's 1.50 dollars per gig afterwards they'd have to be losing money on the 50 dollars.

1.50x100 = 150 dollars. I feel for someone who's kids installs a torrent app.

Accurate usage measuring?

The ISPs need to have accurate usage meters available. They also need to provide better filtering for spam and other external garbage that would eat into your usage cap.

3.25 GB/day

Quite a bit... That works out to be a constant 315 kbps stream, 24/7 nonstop.

Re: grrrrrrrrr!!! stupid international ISP's!!!

Monopoly has nothing to do with why other countries do this.. They're networks are not as good as ours and they have to instill controls.. this is how they do it.

My Usage last month was 369gigs.
Ouch!!!
I better find a new provider soon, or get a part time job.
I've already talk to a couple of co. that offer 5Mbs for about $30.00 and they advertise no block port,no limit and no traffic shaping.

Utopia Providers Cap

Both MStar and XMission on the Utopia have fine print of 100GB cap on standard 15 Mbps Symmetrical services. I know XMission charges $50 for an additional 100GB if you go over. Not sure what to think of that when services is $40 to begin with.
