Radioactif here i come!

I have the ultra service by videotron... and ill just be switching to radioactif, 29$/month unlimited 5m dsl. I need the unlimited cap because thats how i watch tv, yeah i pay for it too, just i wanna watch it when I have the time, not when they tell me somethings on.

The more money the corps make.. the more they want to steal

It's happening all over again...
They have us pinned to the ground...
The same thing happened before.. Sympatico imposed a ratio ppl jumped to the "no-ratio" Videotron... Is the similar pattern to be repeated?

Lotsa ppl have the trio package... And contracts... What does that mean? Crappier service, less enjoyment of our internet and most of all always having to watch your usage... Come on, this is the internet, not electricity!

Something around 5mbit and unlimited seems ok to me, I have the 10 mbit plan cuz it was the only one that was unlimited...
But now ... It's like if you would buy a Ferrari but can only drive it in a police parking lot... come on....

Terms of Service

I just went over to check out Videotron's Terms of Service briefly, and here are two of which that could prove to be useful:

[...]
Section 2.1.2
[...]
e) if the customer subscribes to the Extreme High-speed Internet service, the service includes unlimited usage of the bandwidth;

[...]

Section 3.9

Modifications - Videotron may, upon at least thirty (30) days' prior notice to the customer's Videotron Messaging Address or by mail, modify the Services or any other provision of this agreement, including the charges and rates stipulated in subsection 3.1 . However, no prior notice shall be required with regard to a modification of Services if Videotron's service offerings remain similar and have no impact on the charges payable by the customer. By settling the account statement accompanying any notice of modification to this agreement, the customer shall be irrevocably deemed to have accepted the modification. However, the customer may, within thirty such (30) days delay, cancel this agreement or request that it be modified in the manner provided in subsection 11.4 below, failing which the customer shall irrevocably be deemed to have accepted the modifications covered by the notice.

[...]

Section 11.4 Modification - Where the provisions of subsection 3.9 apply, the customer may either cancel this agreement or ask Videotron to modify the customer's Services or the duration of the customer's subscription, effective on the date of transmission of the prior notice sent to the customer at the Videotron messaging address, provided the customer has sent Videotron written notice to such effect within thirty (30) days of receiving Videotron's notice.

Re: Terms of Service

You have the right to cancel your service without paying the penalty I CALLED and verified this ... there is no mention of the 30$ cap if you go over your limits (that's sympatico who has the 30$ cap) ... Business packages are only available to a REAL business with a registered company!

They refused to cancel my contract and keep my service running... I have to either live with it or completely cancel it. I'm pretty sure they will offer an option to BUY (MORE $$$) if you want REAL unlimited bandwidth!

most importantly videotron is making sure none of their reps offers to go around this cap... their strategy is to eliminate all these users who go over 100GB or rip them off if they stay by charging them more!

Re: Terms of Service

I'm not cancelling my Videotron service BUT....... I have unsubscribed from their electronic invoice service. From now on they'll have to send me a paper invoice. Instead of paying them electronically I'll gladly pay for a postage stamp and send them a post-dated check while making sure I include all their advertising trash in the return envelope.

There goes their productivity level if everyone does the same!

Re: Terms of Service

I wish I could do that, but I just need unlimited. It would cost me well over $200 / month with a 100gb cap

Great idea tho

Hi there, as much as I hate what just happened to our beloved unlimited internet service, I have to disagree with you on a certain point. I myself thought about my options to get around this cap and continue to get unlimited access without paying more. There's the option of downgrading to high speed and bust the cap every month but not paying more than 30$. The other option is to switch to a business account. I called Videotron and asked them if I could switch to a business account, at my residence. The agent assured me that I could, without ANY kind of fees. Good news. He also said that they would include the first month free if I resign a 1year contract and 3 months free if I resign a 2year contract. I went with the 1year. After going through the details for the switch, it's only at the end of the call that he asked me what kind of business I ran. I told him I had an eBay store (which as you can guess is not quite true). He said very well , may I ask you if you'd like to get our phone service with that and create a bundle? You'd have more visibility on the yellow pages bla bla bla. He was just trying to do a sale by "enhancing" my package, which is legitimate. I kindly declined. So that was it: I'm waiting for their call to confirm that the change has been done. If everything goes well, I'll have their business High speed service of 7mb with unlimited bandwidth for the same price (69.95). The only "downside" is I have to keep a contract (1year).

Re: Terms of Service

I was looking at that too. Thinking about signing up for 2 years to get 3 months free. Since I have a raw feeling that the package will be "modified" (like the extreme package) and I will just pull out then.

Why does the contract protect just videotron? What good is it to us consumers? Is there a way we can force videotron to continue to provide the same extreme package I signed up for?

Videotron

I spoke with someone at Videotron referring to the $30 penalty cap, and that too will be removed. So for those who wanted to change over to the High Speed service and pay the $30 cap, now you will be charged at $1:50 for every gig . The $30 cap will no longer apply. There is also a group action suit being filed against Videotron by Consumers Union at...

In my communiqués with Videoton, they say they are targeting abusive clients. I don't know how one can be considered abusive when you pay for a service and use it for what you intended. Someone at Videotron explained to me that they are doing this to free up bandwith for future projects including some kind of video transmission.

As Bell owns the network, do you really think that they won't put a cap to its independent resellers, too? I admit it's the worst scenario I imagined.

For Videotron, I use them since more than 8 years (since I have a computer, in fact...), been very satisfied. In 1999, there was a technical flaw with the extremely good Samsung modems which prevented Tron from measuring the consumption, although it was officially capped (at 10/5GB!) But BitTorrent wasn't out. Now it's out, I may be seeding my whole collection of classical tracks (copyright-free, for the copyright-illiterates among you ), running a small web server and getting up to 500GB combined. I done that 2 times.

But I digress. If the scenario is less worse than imagined, independent DSL providers such as Montreal-DSL will stay unlimited, and we have another possibility; for just a bit more expensive than the good old, doomed Extreme High Speed, we can have 2 - yes, two - DSL connections going inside our home. the point is just getting them used together as 1 "fat pipe". I searched for multi-homing routers, and found these ones, almost consumer-priced:
- D-Link DI-LB604
- Linksys RV042 and RV082, the latter being more powerful and less buggy with VPN
- Edimax - Last thing I read about it was good, but it was 2003, before BT was widespread.
The problem about these routers is, most of the time, getting them to work with VPN. Big issue for me, as I work with very large files through another SSH tunnel to the lab's server farm.

Technically, as soon as you launch multiple downloads on the network, each one will go through a different connection.
Pros:
Theoretically, this doubles the speed and bandwidth available.

Cons:
In my own network, this will get this way:
2 DSL modems, 1 linked to the Vonage box, 1 to the WAN1 port, the vonage box to the WAN2 port of the multi-homing routeur, this router plugging into a DI604, then the computer into the DI-604. I wanted to get rid of wires :S

Is anyone seeing such an alternative as viable ?

Videotron still offers the unlimited until October. They might as well get the new customers, hopefully they would sign up with other non-cancellable services and hit them with a change of contract a few days later!

Re: Videotron 100BG

Correct me if I am wrong, but ... :

- Is videotron trying to tell me what my internet consumption should be like ?
- You have the right to be jo-schmoe and pay the regular internet with them with a hard cap of 20/10...for regular users, what happens when you are NOT a regular user ?
- You pay alot more for unlimited usage, Tron itself mentions that the vast majority of their users dont ever go over 100gb, so why not make a 55$ rate for 50gigs...and 65$ ( that's including the 10$ off for multiple services mind you, otherwise it is 75$ ) for those amazingly few of us ( according to them alway ) that DO go over 100gb ( like it was originally intended )

Now, I have worked 2 years at videotron, and the first thing you learn on the very first day of your training is this: " Videotron is not a charity company, we are here to make big money " quote Isabelle Richer, VP of custumer service at Videotron ( at least when I worked there ), when trying to explain fees and recurring contracts.

I can understand a corporation is there to make money, it goes without saying, but did you know that they do have a monopoly ? ( on cable services mind you )

- Most of the Quebec province is under videotron control for the cable service, cogeco cable is in st-hyacinth and some other small areas, rogers in an even smaller portion. They cannot imbed on each other territories.

Now you might say " what about adsl, or even sattelite internet ! ", well I worked with Bell Canada also, and let me tell you what they dont want you to know...

Your internet speed is dependant on your distance to the switch, which all your neighborhood is taking his internet and telephone service from ( that isnt cable, mind you ). Thus their policies goes like this :

For a 512kb line ( intermediate ), they check if you have the minimum, which is 128kb access, they wont tell you, you will still pay full price.
For a 5m line ( high speed, ultra high speed ), they check if you have the minimum of 1,5m access, you will still pay the full price, they wont tell you.

If you do notice that you internet on Bell is going much slower than advertised, you can call them and they will give you a rebate based on minimum...for finding out.

On the other side, the internet " Optimax " of Bell, which consist of fiber optic network vs copper for adsl, is being expanded now, you will still get a copper wiring from the network wires to your computer though, but it wont impact much ( short distances, little loss of speed on copper wire ). Their current price are very high though, and they do have the same cap on bandwith.

Now...

Cable is currently number 1 for internet speed in Quebec, followed by Optimax, everything else is not worth mentionning ( this is a thread about extreme users, remember ? ), when speed is the game, bandwith is your peace of mind,

Some months I hardly go on the computer ( summer time, almost always outside anyway ), but when comes winter, internet is my fireplace, and the downloads ( so many movie renting service online these days, not to mention itubes with music/video download, and dare I say it, paid for porn webiste ( some do pay for it you know... ), all take a huge load of bandwith.

This is the end of my observation, I hope you learned some more about your options, or limitations.

1 last thing though...where am I supposed to fill that brand new 4 terrabytes computer I just bought for 12 thousands ( best computer available on alienware ) if not on the internet ?

Just my 2 cents!
