1 edit | Jabari being fitted for tin foil hat
An outage occurs and this guy leaps/jumps/dives to the conclusion that spying caused the whole problem. Quick, fit him for his tin foil hat.

K, in your opinion, things of this nature shouldn't be discussed. Self fulling prophecy, anyone? You play into the "tin-foi hat" crowd as a do-what-big-daddy-wants drone. Guess you like taht kind of cycle.
I on the other hand enjoy discussing, on a discussion board, topics ranging from broadband, to sports, movies, music, and even, gasp, government spying! People such as yourself won't "stop" the discussion with meaningless redirect and name calling, unless of course "tin foiling a hat" is something more or less meant as a factual description of a poster, or am I missing something?
With recent news on government spying, why would this seem such a far fetched idea?
But hey, you can be as reactionartory as you want, like the pigs/cops around my way. I say both terms because their are some slobs on the force and there are some "pro-active" policemen that take part in community. Which is better for our country? |

the fact remains that we'll never know exactly what the deal was with the outage. I believe it's very possible the outage was caused by either hacking and/or government intrusion. Skype will never admit to either. But if you live in the real world and can think for yourself instead of following some official corporate/government line, then either of the above-referenced are very real possibilities. -- The Toll

1 edit | But we do know what happened
I posted this earlier on a related thread.
Well here is what actually happened to Skype
From issue 2618 of New Scientist magazine, 24 August 2007, page 25
The two-day outage of one of the world's largest peer-to-peer (P2P) interned services has raised concerns about the technology's robustness.
P2P networks are touted as the future of internet distribution for video and TV, since the high bandwidth that would normally be provided by central servers is instead shared between individual network members, removing the problem of data bottlenecks.
But on 16 August, the Skype internet telephony network, which depends on P2P, crashed. MIllions of users' computers had rebooted almost simultaneously during a routine update of Windows software. This reduced the network's resources, and when that multitude of freshly rebooted computers sent their combined log-in requests to Skype, its servers buckled. -- Remember safe sex does not prevent crabs. |

| August 16 was a Thursday. Microsoft released their patches on August 14, which is a Tuesday, just like they've done for the past several years.
I guess all those Skype users waited until Thursday to apply the patches? That's doubtful. Most people have their machines set to auto-update, which means the great majority would've been rebooting on Tuesday. |

Yeah, and a fiber/copper cut is also a reasonable possibility too.

Just another example of today's society that would rather print speculation and attempt to get non-denials then actually do some legwork and find out what really happened. |

This would be more interesting... To be able to have the MS patch ability so that you could reboot millions of PC's at the same time. Better hope that MS-Patches are secure. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

"Jabari Zakiya over at Free Software Magazine thinks its a reasonable possibility."
The AP reported today that while the aforementioned quote is a possibility, it was a fact that Jabari Zakiya is a moron.

He is the one who submits these news items (to dslr) to begin with a lot of the time, so why wouldnt he want to discuss it? I dont doubt that the govt could screw up someones network with monitoring software, look who we have elected. |

Therefore architecturally the GOV cannot intercept the contents of the call. They might be able to intercept the call setup with the SKYPE servers, that is about it. |

While I share your contempt for our elected officials, it's not the Congress, nor the other two branches of government, that runs the networks. |

If you know the call is taking place, you can intercept it anywhere in between. But then again, I bet the intelligence agencies couldn't get around Skype's encryption because it's definitely top-notch. -- Charter 5M | Windows XP MCE SP2 | Mobile AMD Athlon 64 4000+ | 1.5GB RAM | ATI Mobile Radeon X600 128MB | 120GB HDD |
