Comments on news posted 2007-08-30 18:35:44: Cablevision's Optimum Online (OOL) used to be the de-facto broadband king around these parts, with users of other ISPs lusting after the speedy cable connections. That was before FiOS, which started giving the cable operator a run for its money. ..

Boost is uncapped, but...

It still doesn't help during peak periods. My friend has Cablevision Boost, and sent me the attached graph.

Both downloads were from Giganews. Notice that during peak periods the download speed is 1/2 Cablevision's basic internet service?

Mmmmmm congestion...

BOOST or no, it still gets ugly on loaded nodes the closer you get to peak usage times.

I get a steady 3.6MB/sec off Newshosting.com on my Boost connection... Any time of the day.

@zippnet.org

I get 20mb Up & Down

Of course I have fiber optic. It costs me $45 plus tax. It rocks. I'm looking at this

Starting download test
Http connection opened in 0 milliseconds
Test performed in 2484 milliseconds
Total bytes downloaded: 5242880 bytes
Throughput: 16.10306 Mbps

Your line speed is estimated to be: 18.9 Mb/s

(based on an average TCP overhead of 15%)

No Matter Boost or Non-Boost - NNTP access is CHOKED

FiOS was just introduced to my area this month. I'm an OOL subscriber on their regular (non-Boost) tier. The speed has been as advertised - about 14.6 mb/s downstream.
Since my triple play package ended a few months ago I've been anxiously awaiting switching to FiOS, and I finally have the appointment set up for Tuesday.
The biggest problem I see with OOL is the near NECESSITY of spending an extra subscription fee to a pay Usenet provider (such as Giganews), due to Cablevision's refusal to spend money maintaining their own Usenet servers and therefore "farming out" their subscribers to an outside provider with access caps to those NNTP connections of 65 kb/sec X 2 connections - pathetic.
The other MAJOR problem with OOL is exclusive to the tier I'm leaving (the standard tier without Boost). Nobody knows for sure exactly what triggers the cap. The algorithm has never been stated - its a nebulous trigger that has been the topic of debate in the OOL forum on BBR for years.

OOL to Fios

I had OOL for years and liked them. But they are hard to deal with and for a long time they had rolling caps. I went to Fios and I love it. I took the TV and they are giving me 20/5 for 39.99 out the door. That with all taxes. I had one problem one time in the two years I have had the data (only had the TV about 10/mo) and they gave me the 50/5 plan for 90days to make up for it and the problem was with billing not the service. The main reason I moved to Fios was that if CV offers all the HD they say they will the way there network is setup they will have a problem. They need to move to IPTV or run move fiber. A CV sales kid came to my door and tried to tell me CV has fiber right to my poll and I know thats not true. Also i have to say the HD does look better on Fios and DirecTV then it does on CV and i think that also has to do with the network. I'm not trying to talk bad about CV but it all comes down to everything coming in and out of your house over one copper cable line and thats going to be a problem.

CV's HD must REALLY SUCK if DTV's downrezzed overcompressed HD-LITE looks better.

Re: OOL to Fios

Have you tweaked? That seems terrible even for a congested area. Have you tried in deep off-peak to verify that this is a congestion problem (e.g. 8am sunday morning)?

I completely concur. Infact, this is really why I'm not in any great rush to go out and order Verizon FIOS. My family loves our HDTV package.

True story - In July, an elderly lady that lives in the neighborhood had stopped in to ask my wife a medical question. At the time my six year old girl was watching Discovery HD Theater. The woman was impressed and asked me to help her pick out a set.

We drove to the Springfield Mall and picked out a nice rear projection set for her. I also helped her set up her Cablevision in terms of getting the right box and showed her the basics. She ran into us when we came back from Vacation a few days ago and glowed with excitement. She relayed that her Bingo group started meeting at her place just because of the HDTV

Point is, HDTV on Cablevision is really second to none and one of the selling points of iO service. Many people who have it will agree with me.

Cablevision in NJ

Even though the maximum speed of Cablevision/ool is very fast, I have found at different times it slows down significantly. There were periods lasting several weeks where I wasn't getting anywhere near the max speed. All in all it's still a good deal for the money you spend. Try getting this download speed from bonded T1s, Ethernet, or a fractional T3. You minimum cost for any of those is around $1500 per month and would most likely cost at least $3200 per month. Of course these are dedicated services, so there really is no substitute for that.

Very Nice.

I'm in the process of moving from a Comcast area to an OOL area and I couldn't be happier. I cannot wait to hook up my OOL Boost! Not to mention waaay more HD channels! Nice.

capacity issues still loom @ 30/5?

It is doubtful cablevision is upgrading the outside plant to give boost customers the REAL 30/5 bandwidth they are paying the extra "boost fee" for (to avoid or risk losing customers to FIOS). The real incentive to do *something* because more areas of NYC and Long Island (cablevision's backyard) become installable for FIOS.

Verizon has reallocated money siphoned off to Atlantic states such as Virginia deployments back to NY metro and is completing (95-99% coverage)the Long Island area closer to the projected schedule of 5 years..

Keep in mind, it is QUITE POSSIBLE what cablevision is doing is NOT in actuality running more fiber, as it is reallocating the CAPPED bandwidth from the 15/2 @ 29.95 subscribers to the 30/5 *boost* subscribers who pay more... Very dubious that cablevision would add more outside plant fiber in overloaded nodes. Probably more of maximizing revenue, while this will irk some 15/2 @29.95 triple play subscribers to move to FIOS and get off the bandwidth caps.. ultimately it will force cablevision to do away with the caps.. at either speed. Cablevision is notorious for burning the candle at both sides when it comes to upgrading it's outside plant.. mainly it is smoke and mirrors.. I've yet to see (and you bbr readers can confirm this) that no NEW outside node fiber is being upgraded/built to accommodate 30/5, any gains in node unburdening is coming at FIOS customer subscription & FAP'ing (fair access policy, aka capping 15/2) rates rather than construction of NEW outside plant.

Re: capacity issues still loom @ 30/5?

Of course,
Blunted is part of a very SMALL vocal minority with intermittent slow speed issues. He has gotten to be such a prick about it that most forum people including probably CV just want him to cancel and go xo himself.
Cablevision is just starting to get into high gear in regards to the limits of Docsis 2.0. What other Cable provider in the USA is doing this? Not to mention these are all UNANNOUNCED updates that are not fully rolled out. Now that they have reached the upper limits of the vendor supplied equipment, they can begin to optimize the network for neighborhoods. Some people just can not appreciate that even when you drive the latest Mercedes Benz/BMW, sometimes it will leave you broken down on the highway.

In Blunted's case, he has already received credit for the Boost service since it wasnt working up to par. He only gets 15/2 so instead of him just riding the credits out until they get their act together. He comes onthe forum's to b$itch and moan. IS there a way to put people on ignore?

Dude, we heard you the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth time you posted the same tired "Boost sucks" in this thread. I understand all too well about complaining when things aren't working right, you know that. You also know I'm on your side, but this is just not a productive way to go about it. The people who would be swayed by your negative assessment of OOL BOOST surely don't need things repeated to them ad nauseum. Why not hit the reply when you actually have something to say other than "Boost sucks." ..... I mean really...

What I'm really trying to say is, yes, everyone knows, and some of us are sympathetic to your plight... However, BOOST is not a service with SLAs. You know that, and you also know that the same speed with an SLA would cost you thousands of dollars a month.

I fail to comprehend why you continue to pay for BOOST even though it isn't performing much better than standard OOL. Why not save the 15 bucks a month?

I hope you get your money's worth like everyone else, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go with another provider or another tier... Especially when a more expensive tier isn't performing as well as one would expect... Why the heck give them more money in this case? I don't get it..
