Comments on news posted 2007-09-04 09:25:01: Last month, we watched as a tirade by an unknown web designer backfired, actually turning many people on to ad blocking software, which, at this point, is available for both IE and Firefox. ..

If Adblocker Plus doesn't stop them ...

Then using an edited system32/devices/etc/hosts sure will - that puts the ad coming from your own PC - which if you're NOT running a webserve - means it has nothing to display. It also keeps the ads from being loaded on your PC in the first place....

...the only problem I have with HOSTS file blocking is having to update each computer with updated lists, and the list must contain the full domain-name which can get make it very long. I currently use »www.dnsredirector.com on a server (or Microsoft's SBS) to filter ads and naughty sites out for the entire network of PCs - and without having to install software or modify each workstation cause it’s all done at the DNS level.

Same problem as P2P

I hate ads. I use a hosts file to block the major advertising sites from placing ads on my site. I might not mind some ads but the Flash/animated that folds over on your screen so you can't see the page, etc. or an ad that runs left to right over your screen you're trying to read is ruining it for all advertisers.

Still, why should CNN spend time and money on a web site for free instead of making you watch their channel? This problem is similar to torrents and P2P. No artist or media will provide content if they aren't going to make money at it.

Same thing with my DVR. I rarely watch live TV any more. If I come across an interesting show, I record it and watch it later so I can fast forward through the ads. I also have my DVR set to record my favorite shows and I fast forward through any advertising.

So the problem goes much further than just ad blocking on the net or on TV channels. It extends into not paying for content (torrents/P2P) and will eventually cause content to dry up unless a solution is found.

Adblockers getting popular?

Imagine that....

I wonder why they are getting popular? Could it be people are getting more tech savvy or people are just getting tired of the obtrusive ads.

1) If there are ads on the webpage, why do I need pop-ups or pop ups that move across the screen? Feels like an idiot trying to catch a popup.

2) Why do I need ads that talk to me or make annoying sounds that I have to mute the volume? I already have enough annoyance in my life, thank you very much.

3) How come there are websites that show a popup a page with just an ad, gives you the option to close it but the page never closes? Has to double check my mouse to see if it's actually working.

4) If I click on one ad why to they all of a sudden have to send me targeted ads? Paints a bulls-eye on my forehead and use me as target practice.

5) Why do websites have to track me? Makes me feel like a criminal for just clicking a ad.

6) How come when you move your mouse pointer over a ad it has to blow up 10 times the size and almost makes me fall out of the chair? Excuse me, I am not that blind. If I didn't click on it the first time it probably wasn't worth seeing to begin with.

Re: Adblockers getting popular?

.... and don't forget that lovely 'peeling page' that starts to roll down anytime your mouse gets near it .... or the people that start walking across the bottom of the screen and start talking to you ... or that lovely intellitxt that pops up that little text box over everything that you are trying to read every time your mouse goes over a link.

... and all those lovely stats and tracking scripts and images. Do some of these sites really need that many different ones on the same site? The heatmap has got to be my favorite ... it tracks everywhere you move your mouse pointer on the page.

GETTING popular?! Oh, it's been gotten! Just like flipping channels during commercials, ad blocking is here to stay. When it gets to 100% and all internet companies have to fold because of no revenue, oh well! lol

Ads are encourging people to use ABP

I typically don't load ABP right away. The first site that shows me one of the obnoxious popovers or mouseovers sends me fuming to ABP, and once installed the last thing I'm going to do is spend time whitelisting non obnoxious ads. Purveyors of non obnoxious ads might find their time better spent helping to manage the ad block lists rather than complain that ABP is evil.

The picture bandwidth doesn't bother me. The bandwidth and browser CPU used by the javascript to support all these ads are what I'm trying to get rid of. Using 100% of a Pentium 4 for something I don't even want is a surefire way to get on my crap list.

If other comments are any hint, looks like I'll need to install ABP onto peoples' computers that are constantly getting spyware.

Too many Internet ads are completely fake anyways, like "Free iPod" or "Microsoft servers are the most reliable" or "Win big with online gambling." The high percentage of charlatans tells me that the advertising medium is broken and I just ignore it until it is fixed. ABP ignores the ads and cleans up surfing the Internet quite nicely.
