Some confusion going on.

1- Self install kits for CDV(just Emta no phones) are being offered in select locations just not San Fran as of 8/24/07.

2- San Fran is testing self-install kits with enhanced cordless phones.

Installation Kit includes:
3 Cordless Phones
Wireless base and pre-wired EMTA
3 AC adapters
3 rechargeable battery packs
3 ft Coaxial cable
25 ft Coaxial cable
Coaxial splitter
RJ 11 Telephony splitter (allows customer to connect corded phone to eMTA in the event of a power outage)

Say what?

"$250 for three cordless phones that link to their cable modems."

Uhm... NOT! $80 a pop for cordless phones? WTF?

That's what Bloomberg says. A price if any hasn't been decided.

While I subscribe to both

their HSI and Tv service, I haven't and won't be going with their CDV.

I can't really justify their 40.00 per month price tag for it, especially when there are other options out there that fill this gap.

While no one can argue with the success they're having with subscriber growth, I think if they made their triple play package prices more attractive for current customers..they could realize a lot more.

Their 99.00 mo/ special (Hsi, digital tv and cdv) for new customers goes to something like 140 or maybe even 150.00 after the special ends. I'd like to see them come down to about 120.00 as a package price for existing customers.
They'd still be getting their full hsi and tv prices..and another 20.00 on top of that for the phone service and put them in better competition with Vonage..at&t callvantage and verizons voip service.

I couldn't agree more.
Their price/month is basically the same as that for POTS.
Vonage, Skype, hell, even AT&T Call Vantage is $25/month.
I don't need to pay $20/month for 'prioritized' service. I've had very little issue with Skype on a 2Mbps (1.6 throughput) - capped DSL line... with a 6-12Mbps cable line, I should have less issues, w/o having to pay POTS style pricing.

Indeed. Over the past 4 months Comcast has sent me at least 15 mailings and made a couple phone calls trying to get me to sign up for CDV. Their intro price is great at $19.99 but there's no way I'll pay $40 after 6 months. POTS with Verizon is only a couple bucks more (and that includes voicemail, caller id, and call waiting).

For $14.99 (which has now risen to $18 with tax), Vonage provides an excellent value and while the latency sometimes gets annoying, it's not worth paying $20+ more per month to fix it.

What a brick...

Wow, that thing is huge compared to the Charter equipment I got. Charter's looks like a thin DSL modem...

Just had to say that, since the box looks large.

Comcast must be using both Arris and Motorola, because my sister had the Arris and I have the Motorola. Anyway it's in the basement so it doesn't bother me either way.

And that is what causes a lot of problems. Special intro rates that go way up at the end of the promo.

As for their phone service, do they supply a UPS for a self install?

This one has battery backup built in.

I prefer to pick my own runtime via whatever UPS I choose to afford.

However, some runtime built in is better than none at all.

Is it one of those exploding fire starting batteries we keep reading about?

Re: modem

usually the Digital phone modem is free because its required for the voice part. they don't let you buy your own.

Also about the Batteries they're not built in with MOT! They're optional. TWC uses them in my area and no battery at all.

If you have voice service, its $3 a month for the EMTA which does voice AND internet. If for some reason the EMTA can't be installed where the computer is, a seperate modem and EMTA will be installed, and you still pay $3 for the EMTA but the standalone modem is free. If you dont have internet, the EMTA should be included. This of course could and probably does vary market to market.

And while the batteries aren't built it, every EMTA I've seen from Comcast has them included.
