So much for the Telco - Dinosaur killing shooting star that was RCN.. now they've become a pathetic echo of that company who caters to micro deployments. |

| It's all about the product appeal
RCN better step up with it's product appeal.
A rich graphical user interface with games, caller ID on TV, and other interactive apps, including Multi-Room DVR would help the user experience in the Digital Video department. They also need to try to be a leader in HD offerings. Get those carriage deals, and deploy whatever it takes to offer the channels (reduce analogs, deploy SDV).
Keep managing that internet bandwidth and the 20/2 Mega Modem should be fine for now. Invest heavily in DOCSIS 3.0 when available and raise the bar one step higher.
This is what they have to do to compete. Customers are going to go with the provider that offers the most features, channels and speed for the money. |

[Sarcasm] Then why are people going to U-Verse? =P [/Sarcasm]
If they have 20/2 they should be fine against Comcast...for now.
SDV would help, but it makes channel flipping longer =P
Good points all around though. |

| Hardly surprising
This is hardly surprising given that more than half of RCN's territory now has to compete with FiOS. The only towns left in MA that RCN covers and FiOS doesn't are Somerville, Milton and parts of Boston IIRC. Watertown, Waltham, Framingham, Natick, Arlington, Woburn, Lexington, Winchester, Newton - all FiOS towns now. The same story is repeated in the DC/Maryland area |

"which suggests that Verizon should scale down DSL marketing to capture customer attention in terms of FiOS."
I hope thats a joke..Whats the current percentage of markets FiOS is in? I would bet 10% and its not going up anytime soon. |

| I am very happy with my RCN Mach 20 service. I am very unhappy with my directv (I can not get the 5 line dish due to trees and fraidy scared installers who wont go on my pitched roof.) So I am frothing at the mouth for FIOS in Somerville. I will never ever ever be a comcrap customer again! EVER |

| I switched to Directv from RCN back in May and it was the best move I've made. The service and support is better and the icing is the HD content that is now avaiable on DTV. They killed my DVR with a "super reset" and couldnt get someone out to swap my box for three days. I offered to go do a swap at their location, but the HD DVR is only to be installed by a tech. If I screwed the box up, fine...but they killed it from their end and weren't willing to work with me to get me a new box ASAP. It sickens me that I still have to give RCN money for my internet connection, but at least it works. They are a poorly run company and could really benefit from some focus groups and better customer service. |
